To think they should take him to the vets

My mum and dads dog had a full box of ‘black magic’ dark chocolates yesterday and today has vomiting, wheezing, and is laid down looking very sorry for himself but they won’t take to the vets saying none will be open now

I don't know if it's allowed on Mumsnet but if you set up a go fund me I'm sure many people would contribute. There are many dog lovers on this thread & if those that could, gave a couple of £ each it would help your parents. They are probably scared as well as worried about the financial situation.

I really hope the doggo is okay x

Please keep us updated.

Wouldn’t be allowed. Remember we have no idea if anyone on the internet is who they say they are.

It'll be too late for this poor dog
Op has spent too much time fannying around doing zilch

Nextdoor55 · 28/12/2024 19:13

When did the dog eat the chocolates? I'm afraid I think your parents have probably broken the law here, they know that the dog is suffering, they have a duty to act

dothehokeycokey · 28/12/2024 19:13

This really won't end well if he doesn't get seen really really soon (may even be too late)

Run and ask a neighbour or anyone in the road they love for a lift.

Fleurdalys · 28/12/2024 19:13

@DinosaurMunch
Well I'm bloody glad you are not my dogs vet

Rosiecidar · 28/12/2024 19:13

Obviously they should get the pup checked at a vet. But saying that cheap chocolate tends to contain sugar and cocoa butter and small traces of actual chocolate.

MerryMaker · 28/12/2024 19:14

Pets do not get vet treatment every day. Things have to be much worse than this to get prosecuted

It was dark chocolate 🤦‍♀️

He is now sleeping I’m very worried about him but will sort him being seen.

He still needs to be seen tonight.

LittleMissLateForWorkAgain · 28/12/2024 19:16

We were at the vet last month with my friend s cat who had pancreatitis. She has insurance but no money at the time. I paid the 800 pounds and she paid me back BUT we couldn't help overhearing an exchange with another customer who s cat had had surgery and couldn't pay the full amount that day. Vet agreed to take 50 pounds then and a plan was set up.

I m telling OP this @Huggyhuggy in case they could ask to do similar.

However her parents are at best irresponsible (always get pet insurance or put money away/credit card for emergency) or worst cruel.

Dogs and cats like us feel pain and I doubt they would want to die a horrible death from kidney or liver failure or poisoning without palliative medical care or an attempt to save their lives.

Poor dog.

This makes me so angry!!! Can you drive there and take the poor dog to the vet? I’m sorry but your parents are bloody evil to sit back and do nothing but watch that poor dog suffer.

She can't drive.

@ilovesooty you get a lift. You ask a friend. You take a taxi. Honestly, that poor animal.

It’s most definitely real. it’s the funding of this which is the issue, I’m trying to get through to them which is why I posted.

The funding?

Are you after posters to give you money?

Op has spent too much time fannying around doing zilch

Op has only just arrived at her parents, also it's not her dog but she has come on here for advice and she is trying her best, unlike her parents.
Your comment it's not very nice, for all you know the op could be under 18 or not know about emergency vets, but she could see the dog is unwell and come and asked for advice.

Yes OP. Find a vet and knock on a few neighbours doors to see if they’ll give you a lift. I would despite hating dogs but no way would I leave one suffering!

LittleMissLateForWorkAgain · 28/12/2024 19:20

Also it's the price you pay for the love and company you get from a pet.

I was over £100 just for antibiotics and to see the vet when my girl cat had a urine infection but I couldn't have let her suffer as it's very painful.

That is extremely rare. My vet you have to pay that day. If you say you can't afford it, they just tell you to put it on your credit card

Well, if you haven’t got a credit card, I guess that’s the next option but it was a Medivet if that helps because they’re all franchisees aren’t they? So it’s a bit more at the owners discretion

£100 is a very cheap vets bill.

I agree with you but the post I quoted specifically suggested that the OP should drive the dog to the vet.

hollyblueivy · 28/12/2024 19:21

Has the OP got the advice she wanted from the vet that she was trying to get through to 90 minutes ago? What did they say? Do your parents really think that the sleep is what the dog needs and will be fine?

I hope that he is.

FarmersWife2019 · 28/12/2024 19:22

I work as a receptionist in a vets. They absolutely should at least speak to a vet. They do an online calculation to check dog body weight versus chocolate eaten and see if it’s a fatal dose/needs treatment. They won’t make the dog sick now as it’s already been digested but the biggest worry would be kidney damage so they would probably
see and provide fluid support.
