To think they should take him to the vets

My mum and dads dog had a full box of ‘black magic’ dark chocolates yesterday and today has vomiting, wheezing, and is laid down looking very sorry for himself but they won’t take to the vets saying none will be open now

The theobromine in the chocolate affects stomach, cardiovascular and respiratory systems. He’s already poisoned. That dog needed treatment with an emetic when he ate the chocolates.

Your parents are utterly despicable.

It has a half life of 18 hours. Let’s hope he doesn’t die or suffer long term effects.

dawngreen · 28/12/2024 19:01

Poor dog at deaths door now cause sxxt owners let him eat not 1 but 2 lots of chocolate!😡

Octopies · 28/12/2024 19:01

Could you ask on Facebook local group or nextdoor app etc if someone local can take you and the dog to the vets? I know our vets put up an appeal for a dog blood donor for an emergency situation a few weeks back and they were absolutely inundated with animal lovers wanting to help out.

NovaF · 28/12/2024 19:01

Last year my dog ate a pack of lindt chcocolates, we only knew because we found the foil. The dog had been sick. When I called the vet they told me to bring her immediately as the sick was a sign of poisoning. We took her within a few hours and they gave her charcoal to absorb it.

You need to call pdsa and ask them for advice. They can treat the dog for free if any of you are on the following benefits, if your parents are pensioners then they can get free treatement https://www.pdsa.org.uk/pet-help-and-advice/eligibility

the dog can have organ failure, your parents are complete shitheads for not taking the dog to the vet. When we took our dog she was acting normally and they told us it was an emergency because of the sick, your parents dog sounds massively unwell

Check if you're eligible

Use our handy eligibility checker to see if you’re eligible for PDSA services.

Call the RSPCA emergency number, 0300 1234 999 inform them that your parents are being cruel / mistreating their dog by choosing not to take their dog to an emergency Vet.

Some people shouldn't have pets, for a dog to manage to eat chocolate twice is very very careless

NormaNormalPants · 28/12/2024 19:02

@Huggyhuggy are you able to say where in the country you are? If you were local to us I’d be more than happy to offer a lift, I’m sure others feel the same if you’re nearby to them.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 28/12/2024 19:02

Why the hell do people have pets if they aren’t going to provide them with the right care! Poor little dog, I fear they are already too late, and two lots of dark chocolate FFS!!!

dawngreen · 28/12/2024 19:02

He needs to be made sick to get rid of some of the toxins in his system

Huggyhuggy · 28/12/2024 19:00

He is now sleeping I’m very worried about him but will sort him being seen.

Please do it immediately as he probably won't wake up and die in immense pain

Jifmicroliquid · 28/12/2024 19:04

Your parents shouldn’t have a dog. I would be absolutely livid!
Dark chocolate is exceptionally dangerous for dogs and they can die a horrid death days later. Please get him to a vet.

Balancedcitizen101 · 28/12/2024 19:04

There will be an emergency number somewhere, it may be a different site but there will be an open all hours emergency vet. Take it asap, I would not rely on it sleeping it off.

He may not wake up from this sleep if someone doesn't drive him to a vet. Even if you don't have a car - get a taxi and take him. Now.

Cucumberpickler · 28/12/2024 19:05

Are they struggling financially and that’s why they aren’t taking him to the vet ? Could you help them if that’s the case, I know some posters are saying about it being a criminal offence but I’d be cautious of getting them in trouble if they are struggling and you or another family member could help instead ?
going forwards though it doesn’t sound they should keep the poor dog if he survives

Baxterbaxter · 28/12/2024 19:06

@MerryMaker im sorry but that is not an excuse. You do not get a dog and allow these things to happen and not do anything about it because you can’t afford it. So the dog has to suffer and possibly die because they can’t pay?? No, you borrow money, you do SOMETHING. You DO NOT let the animal suffer. Absolutely abhorrent behaviour.

biscuitsandbooks · 28/12/2024 19:06

amylou8 · 28/12/2024 18:50

Obviously the dog needs to go to the vets, but you can understand their reticence from a financial point of view. A friend paid £900 at the emergency vet last week to have a cat seen and PTS, no actual treatment just euthernased. I can't begin to imagine the eye watering sum this is going to cost without insurance. I hope the dog is okay.

Well, that's part of the responsibility of having a pet. You can't just leave them to suffer.

Patienceinshortsupply · 28/12/2024 19:07

If you or your parents are on FB find a local page and ask for help. There's bound to be someone living locally who would help out with transport.

Your parents are a disgrace OP, sorry. What they're doing is beyond cruel.

TheDowagerCountessofPembroke · 28/12/2024 19:07

There is bound to be some kind of Facebook local pet group. If you post on there I bet there would be a dog lover who would help you get to the emergency vet. It’s literally life or death for the poor dog.

Totally agree

Zonder · 28/12/2024 19:08

I hope he is ok.

hby9628 · 28/12/2024 19:08

I don't know if it's allowed on Mumsnet but if you set up a go fund me I'm sure many people would contribute. There are many dog lovers on this thread & if those that could, gave a couple of £ each it would help your parents. They are probably scared as well as worried about the financial situation.

I really hope the doggo is okay x

Please keep us updated.

BiteyShark · 28/12/2024 19:09

OP sometimes things happen to make you realise your parents aren't that great and I think this is one of them.

This is very upsetting to read.
I couldn't have anything to do with them again after such cruelty.

GymBuffMum · 28/12/2024 19:11

I’m not a dog owner (or lover) but even I know chocolate poisons dogs. They should have rang a vet when they opened this morning to get him in so no emergency charges during opening hours!

Surely paying a few hundred quid is better than finding the poor thing dead and having to deal with the body?

Hope he isn’t left to suffer and gets seen to tonight.

Can you give your parents details to the vet so the bill goes to them OP? Would a taxi take him if you have no transport?

DinosaurMunch · 28/12/2024 19:12

Fleurdalys · 28/12/2024 18:25
