To think they should take him to the vets

My mum and dads dog had a full box of ‘black magic’ dark chocolates yesterday and today has vomiting, wheezing, and is laid down looking very sorry for himself but they won’t take to the vets saying none will be open now

I must admit this is why I thought it was a wind up. I’ve not seen a box of black magic chocolates on sale in 30 years.

Tesco, Iceland and Morrisons all have them on sale.

Honestly your backstory is irrelevant, my point still stands, I asked what the point of the post was. You posted an hour and a half ago and when it was then made clear its an urgent situation, you then said you can't do anything. So I say again, what was the point apart from to either rile people up or to elicit offers of money maybe?

You've been told it's serious, that info could have been found using Google, get an hour and a half later you are now telling people why you can't do anything so again, what was the point in the post.

She's skint and panicking and it's not her dog. She posted for reassurance and you're having a go. Nice.

That poor sweet dog. Your parents are absolutely horrid to not get it help at the vets 😳😢🤬

Next time one of them feel very unwell, just say casually "You'll be ok, and you can see a doctor in a few days as it doesn't really matter; it's only your health...(!)"

Tortielady · 28/12/2024 21:27

Fleurdalys · 28/12/2024 21:16

Thornton are mostly milk chocolate
Black magic are dark chocolate
Highly toxic

The OP said something about Elizabeth Shaw dark chocolate mints too - high in both theobromine and mint oil. And he's a lurcher, a lightweight breed, which makes him more susceptible to poison.

Goodtoknowhey · 28/12/2024 21:28

Feel so sad that the dog was trying to get on the dads lap, he needs help

Fleurdalys · 28/12/2024 21:29

Any decent vet would not see a dog suffer
They will chase up payment via bailiffs if needed
Anyone who is irresponsible enough to let their dog eat two lots of chocolate ( read the original post)
Needs banning from owning animals
Fucking twats

Prettydisgustingactually · 28/12/2024 21:35

@Huggyhuggy
Have you any news OP? I cannot believe how nasty everyone has been to you and won’t blame you if you don’t come back. @anothermnuser123 put the wine bottle down as it’s clearly making you aggressive.
Please tell us the dog is ok. I have two Lurchers and they have extremely delicate stomachs. The dog really is in grave danger and could be dying. Your parents could be prosecuted for failing to get treatment for a dog in their care and causing death/unnecessary suffering.

Thank you for caring. Please let us know.

This
Op your parents need to take responsibility and get the dog to a vets or you need to take it as it sounds like they can’t be arsed

Chocolate is poisonous to dogs so he should be seen by a vet what about pdsa ?

Not to mention that the mints are individually foil wrapped - so presumably those are somewhere in the dog’s system as well. How the owners could have been content with that situation for the 24 hours before the OP arrived is beyond me. They deserve to be prosecuted.

A bit late to comment without reading all the posts 🤦‍♀️

My friend gave me some as a Christmas present.

Humphrey8 · 28/12/2024 21:56

Your parents do not deserve to keep this dog. They are irresponsible and neglectful dogs owners. If the dog survives this, please make them give it up for adoption

TheQuirkyMaker · 28/12/2024 21:57

A few years ago our little dog got frighted by Christmas crackers and gobbled down a large box of Thorntons Milk Chocolate in another room. When we found out what she had done she had vomited copious amounts of mucus and chocolate and was looking very sorry for herself. The vet we called said she had probably vomited up the poison and the next day she was a right as rain.

FeliznaviDogs · 28/12/2024 21:59

DinosaurMunch · 28/12/2024 21:13

It's not totally incorrect at all.
Weight of 9 black magic chocolates is 174 g.
VPS recommends treatment at 3.5 g per kg for dark chocolate
25 kg dog can have 3.5 x 25 = 87.5 g dark chocolate.
Bearing in mind a chocolate from a box of chocolates is probably less than 50% actual chocolate - the middles are caramel, truffle etc - this dog is borderline for needing treatment.
It's clearly symptomatic but more than likely it will recover. Most dogs do recover even if they show symptoms. Theobromine does not cause kidney damage. You are just scared mongering

I advised to contact the poisons line to get specific advice - this is only what a vet would do. It's not irresponsible.

I mean if a dog presented having eaten this much chocolate within a few hours it would be safer to induce vomiting and give some charcoal than take the risk. But given it's been 24 hours or more, it's too late for that anyway. IV fluids and overnight care will be £1000 at an emergency vets.

Are you allowing for the additional box of mint dark chocs that the dog also ate the day before? They’re usually 160g and have no fillings.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 28/12/2024 22:03

I hope the dog is OK, @Huggyhuggy.

Snoopdoggydog123 · 28/12/2024 22:03

Bad news is you're provably all digging quite a large hole soon.

Alternatively have you considered selling a kidney?

AngryLikeHades · 28/12/2024 22:04

Your parents are fucking idiots, but as others have said, the anger shouldn't have been directed towards you.

WiddlinDiddlin · 28/12/2024 22:05

Sorry @DinosaurMunch where was it confirmed what the dog weighs?

My 'medium lurcher' weighed just 15kg. My friends 'medium lurcher' weighed 12 and anothers was 20.

What might be safe for a 20kg dog might not be for a 12kg one - and it isn't just the theobromine thats a risk, the sugar and the caffeine, the fat, the mint oil... those are also all a problem, potentially.

You're also calculating just for the most recent box of chocolates, but the dog has also very recently had an unknown quantity of dark mint chocolates which are solid pieces, not fondant filled cheaper chocolate.

You haven't even got this dogs accurate weight, you are in absolutely no position to state that this dog is not at risk, and if you truly have a veterinary qualification, you'd know that!

Princessconsuelabananahammock9 · 28/12/2024 22:06

Sounds like he's dying.

He's only 2?!

I would take him to the vet and never speak to my parents again.

That's animal abuse.

CrowleyKitten · 28/12/2024 22:06

Huggyhuggy · 28/12/2024 18:01

He ate the whole box so about 9 dark chocolates. He keeps yawning so is clearly stressed. He even jumped on my dad and was laid on his lap and he’s definitely not a lap dog! My mum has just said a day or 2 before this he also ate through a box of those mint chocolate selection, the wrapped ones but said he was fine after that

dogs can't process the theobromine in chocolate. so it builds up in their system. if they've previously had other incidents of chocolate stealing, it might not even take that much to tip the theorbromine level in their body over the edge of what is dangerous

Fleurdalys · 28/12/2024 22:07

@feliznavidogs
This!
Apparently Dinosaurmunch is a vet
A pretty shit one if that's the truth which I sincerely hope is not true

Wheresthebeach · 28/12/2024 22:07

OP I’m stunned at the nastiness on this thread. Not your dog, yet you are trying to help and seeking reassurance that the dog needs a vet in the face of your parents indifference.

I hope the dog is okay. He does sound ill.

MintShaker · 28/12/2024 22:07

I'm glad that you're being sensible. Please let us know how he is.
