To think they should take him to the vets

My mum and dads dog had a full box of ‘black magic’ dark chocolates yesterday and today has vomiting, wheezing, and is laid down looking very sorry for himself but they won’t take to the vets saying none will be open now

I have rushed my mum’s dog to the vet’s on Christmas Day before. I was the only one in the house who hadn’t had a drink. The vets were just cooking their Christmas lunch but dropped everything to come and treat the dog. So I can’t see it being an issue going to the vets today. It will be an emergency vet (might not be the local office) but there will be one available.

A few months ago I had to rush my cat to the emergency vet’s over an hour away. Cost almost £400 to be examined and given a painkiller but it’s what you have to do if you have a pet.

AnarchismUK · 28/12/2024 20:00

I hope to fuck you're on your way to the vets. It might not be your dog, but you are now fully aware of how seriously ill that poor creature could be.
Your parents are shocking,. Plenty of vets have been open today and would have seen him immediately, yet they've left their innocent pet to suffer. Please be a troll, the alternative doesn't bear thinking about.

BrendaSmall · 28/12/2024 20:01

Have they checked that he hadn’t got any foil stuck on his teeth throat?
sounds like there’s something annoying him and no doubt he’s got tummy ache too !!

BingGetInTheSea · 28/12/2024 20:01

Not sure anyone’s said this yet but it’s good that he’s vomited already - fingers crossed he’s chucked up at least some of what he ate!

But as it’s several hours later and he’s wheezing etc I’d definitely take him to the vets. Kidney damage isn’t worth the risk. Hope he’s ok!

HurdyGurdy19 · 28/12/2024 20:02

When we had our dog, she "broke into" my daughter's bedroom and snaffled half a large family sized bar of dairy milk chocolate.

I rang the vet who said that we had to make her sick (dog, not daughter) and to give her a spoonful of washing soda crystals. Thankfully I did have some in, and poor doggy thought she was getting a treat and swallowed it down willingly. Took about five minutes before she was sick.

Ironic, given that just the previous week, we'd spent a not considerable sum of money on medicine to stop her from being sick 🙄

If your parents' dog has been sick a couple of times, hopefully it will have ejected any remaining chocolate and won't get any worse. But I'd still either ring the vet or make a visit.

And then bash your parents' heads together - they need to understand that human chocolate CAN be lethal to dogs.

OddBallNumber5 · 28/12/2024 20:04

Any update OP?

Rainee123 · 28/12/2024 20:05

I took my dog to the vets a few days ago after eating a box of chocolates. Vet was very concerned when I rang, even though there were no symptoms, and told me to come straight in. It was out of hours and it cost me £350, a small cost to keep him alive. They need to take him in now, a small amount of dark choc can kill.

Purplecatshopaholic · 28/12/2024 20:09

I hope by now he is being seen op? Or at least on the way there. Good grief, I can’t believe the frankly shameful behaviour of your parents. They know their dog has eaten a poison and clearly don’t give a shit about the animal suffering, never mind he could quite easily die.

NiftyKoala · 28/12/2024 20:10

It comes across you are not interested in solutions just venting. Where there is a will there is a way. Driving or not if you wanted toget him to the vet you would.

I know you're trying to be helpful, but you're actually wrong that the vomiting is a good thing.

In the presence of a vet - and induced by the vet - it is good but, if the dog is doing it itself...that indicates pretty severe poisoning and the fact is that vomiting doesn't expel all the toxins.

So, worst case scenario...the dog is dehydrated (from the vomiting), therefore weaker, and still chock full of toxins.

@Huggyhuggy if your parents receive any benefits, they can register for free vet care with https://www.pdsa.org.uk there may be one local to them.

We had to do that some years ago with our old lady cat. She started with restlessness, then we heard her crying while she was using the cat tray, and she ran into the lounge to find us, which was when we saw the blood. We both thought UTI and whipped her straight out to see the emergency vet as it was the weekend. It was indeed a UTI. She got a dose of morphine and we got a bill for several hundred pounds (luckily, we'd pet insurance.) Unfortunately, her many underlying health problems meant we had to let her go not long afterwards, but we were able to keep her reasonably comfortable in the meantime.

Harriethulas · 28/12/2024 20:17

Failing to understand why your parents haven’t even called the out of hours vet? Advice over the phone is FREE. Your vet will tell you this is a toxic amount and to bring him in immediately, hopefully they will listen to the advice. We are not legally allowed to turn away a sick animal, whether or not the owners have the means to pay. Matters of payment will be discussed later down the line. If this doesn’t kill him, he will end up with horrendous kidney and organ issues and the longer you leave it, the worse it will be. Sincerely, A Fucking Angry Vet.

Haveacuppaandwaitforthistoblowover · 28/12/2024 20:20

Look, I am really sorry and don't like to be rude but is your mother fucking stupid?

The dog is showing signs of upset / poisoning! The fact she doesn't seem (from your replies) to even be that arsed. I hope she never gets another dog again! Would she say this if her grandchild ate something???

The dog needs a vet! Dark chocolate is toxic to dogs, yes it goes by weight etc but the dog is showing signs of being unwell.

You wanted something to convince her? Tell her she wont see her grandchild or you again unless she shows some responsibility!

GET THAT DOG SEEN

Oreosareawful · 28/12/2024 20:22

PiperLeo · 28/12/2024 19:56

That's harsh. The OP has taken the dog to vet and is clearly worried. Otherwise we wouldn't know about it.

The dog hasn’t seen a vet, that’s the issue! The owner is hoping the dog will sleep it off.

paddlinglikecrazy · 28/12/2024 20:22

I hope you got him to the vet op ?
when our dog was a pup she ate 2 milk chocolate coins, our kids were small and I think they’d rolled under the sofa. I found the chewed up wrappers on her bed. I was frantic, terrified she’d die and called the vet. I was told as it was milk chocolate and a small amount to just keep an eye on her. They said if it was dark chocolate they would be concerned and need to see her straight away. So, given its dark chocolate and lots of it, I’d be really concerned as you are. Really poor and neglectful of your parents 😞

Ifyouwannabemylover · 28/12/2024 20:22

They are clearly idiots and don’t deserve a dog ffs. No insurance and letting him eat chocolate twice? You need to call the vet yourself and take him in a taxi. Then don't return him to them as they don't deserve him.

OneZippyWasp · 28/12/2024 20:23

Awful of your parents to let their poor dog suffer like this. If they can’t afford vet fees they shouldn’t have a dog. They should take more care and make sure the dog doesn’t eat chocolate in the first place. Totally irresponsible of them. Thanks for intervening OP, you may well have saved the dogs life.

NiftyKoala · 28/12/2024 20:24

This is great advice. Take that poor dog now. Who knows how bad he is suffering right now. Whether he makes it thru or doesn't he does not deserve to suffer.

Huggyhuggy · 28/12/2024 18:59

Yes, I only got here this evening and Im only just finding it out but my mum was saying he was fine this morning and isn’t seeming concerned. I’m trying to arrange transport to get him seen as he is only 2, can’t see him like this

This was nearly an hour and a half ago.
Has someone collected the dog yet? @Huggyhuggy

carly2803 · 28/12/2024 20:28

hows the dog OP?

i have been the vets for less with one of mine

Tiredofallthis101 · 28/12/2024 20:31

Poor dog. Get him to the vet OP he is clearly suffering. Your parents are behaving like monsters.

My friend's mum did similar to him when he was about 10 and fell off his bike down a gravel slope and got it all embedded in his leg and was in agony. Told him he would be fine, didn't need to see a doctor. A couple of days later he had a fever and his leg was even more agonising and stinking. He nearly died of septic shock and his leg had gone gangrenous. Some people just lack sense and don't recognise the suffering of others. Hope the dog is OK but I would worry given symptoms he won't be.

Shimmyshimmycocobop · 28/12/2024 20:31

I think you're getting a lot of grief op when clearly you're the only one who actually cares about the poor dog. I had to take my dog to the OOHs vet on a Saturday when he ate a bag of chocolate raisins my son had helpfully left in his blazer pocket.
This was a few years ago and it was £800 for an overnight stay, I really hope you get him to a vets but all those getting angry at you are perhaps not realising that you may not actually have the money and it is not your dog! That being said your parents should not be allowed to have a pet.

DBSFstupid · 28/12/2024 20:32

Huggyhuggy · 28/12/2024 18:03

My mum has said ‘he’ll sleep it off’ I’m worried as he seems to be breathing faster than usual. He is a lurcher

For gods sake get the Dog to the Vet NOW. Just bloody do it. Why are your Parents not understanding the seriousness of this?? Please do the right thing - now before it's too late. He also must be in terrible pain.

PiperLeo · 28/12/2024 20:34

I read the post thanks and as I said, OP organized a lift to to the vet. So calling her names is harsh.
