DH is a Freemason and it makes me cringe

He takes it so seriously. He's always gone through hobby phases but he's done this for years now and takes it very seriously. He's currently on the phone discussing 'Bretheryn' and it gives me the major ick, I actually want to cry listening to it.

I've tried to stand by him as he takes it so seriously so i attend events and smile encouragingly but I can't bear it. Never knew when I married him that he wanted to do this. It's not the worst thing he could do of course but it's an old boys club and we're only in our 30s!

He has lots of friends and other hobbies so it's not even his only social outlet, no idea why he needs this in his life and treats it like a second job.

I think it is more the male equivalent of the WI. Just less baked goods.

WI elements with silly medal elements lending itself to the Brownies.

I call it the brownies to husband and ask him what grandmaster flash is up to....I do find it all laughable but not evil as some would like to believe

Can you let us know the “terrifying” paths they make?

As part of their first oath, they agree to the following should they reveal 'secrets'

"It was that of having the throat cut across, the tongue torn out by the root and buried in the sand of the sea at low water mark, or at least a cable length from the shore where the tide regularly ebbs and flows, twice in twenty-four hours had you improperly disclosed the secrets of Freemasonry.

This is weird.

Tallyrand · 27/12/2024 23:10

My Dad joined it for a brief period recently.

Gave it up when they tried to tell him to cut the grass of some fella that was higher up the order than him. Said all they did was try to order him about and he wasn't having it.

He's a retired post man so probably not the type of guy that is desirable to these institutions anyway.

Amazed how many people knew or were related to some Grand Master or other. Is that a weekly rotating position, everyone gets a shot?

My friends husband was in there for a long time. he recently left out of the blue and refuses to say why. Apparently my friend thinks they asked him to do certain things. She also believes he was having sex with people. He always went to bed with no clothes but every time after his nights with them he would wear pants and often have stuff in his undies next day. She said that it was gross and his behaviour got worse and worse. Very controlling. She is happy he is out. It is totally a cult and dangerous.

Sex and sorcery is part of it, or so I've read.

I think there is a lot of homosexuality taking place too.

BobbleHatsRule · 27/12/2024 23:12

The ritual is weird. So is Harry Potter and the old testament and the old brownie thing about dancing around a fairy toadstool or something.

It's all symbolic mysterious silliness. No grown man thinks he's going to be buried in the sand...,

Meh, pretty standard stuff, it’s to underline the seriousness of the commitment- I’ve taken (and broken) similar oaths - fuck all happened lol. Most people break these oaths at some point to a greater or lesser extent- fuck all happens to them either! Doesn’t seem very secretive given you’ve posted it on MN though

Absolutely zero sex, sorcery, or homosexuality from what I saw.

Yes absolutely. They wave their wands before fornication across the altar with one leg buried in sand whilst donating to charity and buying off the local judge.

But still no baked goods 😥

Are people thinking of Thelema instead?

FloralGums · 27/12/2024 23:15

There are some absolutely bonkers things being said here about the Masons. They mainly raise money for charity and have meals together. They have to learn things by rote about their history. You don’t have to be of any particular religion, you don’t have to be of any particular social status or job.
It’s just a social club.
There are Masons groups for women.

The point I'm making is that the oath is weird. And that's just the initial one. What about the ones the higher up you move in degrees.

I've never taken an oath like that in my life.

I'd run a mile from that badness.

BobbleHatsRule · 27/12/2024 23:16

Well I'm no fan of FM because of husband's calendar being dictated by it but this thread is hysterical for the utter rubbish spouted 'or so I've heard'

Cece92 · 27/12/2024 23:16

My grandad has always been and he's roped my dad into it aswell. Well my dad had a choice but tbh it gets him out the house and away from under my mums feet. She loves he has a hobby but hates having to go to the balls and do's they have. He tried to invite me to something they are having tomorrow lol. Not my cup of tea. X

You do know that by posting about it on here the higher echelons of FM badness will be able to reach you? You'll wake up with a white pinny on and sand in your knickers. Run now. Change your username. Save yourself

I mostly agree apart from the part about social status / job. Well, in the area I live anyway.

That’s the thing though, you don’t understand the context. Most religions have similar promises. Eg Islam and Christianity you’re promising to abide by certain rules to avoid eternal damnation

Fair enough if you want to run a mile. Freemasonry, like any (at least originally) esoteric group is, by definition, not meant for everyone.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 27/12/2024 23:24

I have very fond memories of the magnificent Christmas parties in Chester that were held by the lodge there.

Attended many black tie dinners annually, for further fundraising.

My Mum and sister benefitted medically from them funding privately an operation when they each needed one.

I remember Dad learning all his parts for the rituals and wondering WTF went on when he went off out in his black suit with his aprons and white gloves in his masonic case.

Blabadder · 27/12/2024 23:25

Imagine choosing to socialise with a bunch of Nigel Farages. Ugh. Rather drink my tea from satan’s jock strap.

Again spreading completely laughable and ignorant untruths. Personally know of Freemasons who have been to prison, and remained a respected Freemason pre and post sentence.

I know of a Freemason who has within the last year been convicted of an awful crime and has been booted out of the masons permanently.

Well according to people on this thread join the masons (there are female groups and co masons) you will probably doing the latter shortly before sacrificing a hedgehog during the spring equinox before taking part in an orgy with demons summoned during the winter solstice. Knock yourself out.

TeabySea · 27/12/2024 23:29

SavingTheBestTillLast · 27/12/2024 20:41

If it was in the will I suppose there wouldn’t be a lot she could do. If it wasn’t then quite disgraceful the Lodge felt they could dictate anything to do with someone’s funeral.

Edited

I don't know if there was a will.
