Shit Christmas Things.

Turkey - shit. There’s a reason we only eat it once a year because it’s terrible.

Party food - beige shit.

Venting because I’m not allowed to voice these opinions around DP’s relatives so have to lie every year and pretend like it’s all lovely. It’s not.

Anyone agree? Disagree? Have anything else they hate about Christmas they want to vent about?

German-style Christmas markets. Always so disappointing. The notion of them is just lovely...the reality, tat in a shed.

Work Secret Santa - it's an expensive enough time of year without Secret Santa.

Ours is supposed to be a hilarious one. You're supposed to make it tacky or rude on purpose. I hate the waste of it even though it's a limit of a couple of quid. Mine went almost straight in the bin last year. But I'd probably be considered a party pooper if I didn't join in.

Correction. Overpriced tat in a shed.

Startrekkeruniverse · 26/12/2024 23:30

I love turkey, yum.

Ifyouwannabemylover · 26/12/2024 23:30

Turkey to me is just boring. Xmas day is special so why do we pay for a massive dry chicken?!

As for party food, we don’t buy it… we have cheese, cold meat, pickles, olives, bread, crackers etc

This year I haven’t drank as I was hungover Xmas eve and refused to do it to myself anymore. It meant I enjoyed Xmas day and Boxing Day without feeling sluggish and headachey from day drinking so I’d say alcohol is overrated at Xmas!

Startrekkeruniverse · 26/12/2024 23:32

What I hate about Christmas is that MN turns into the most miserable place. Full of people fucking moaning about Christmas.

It’s full of miserable fuckers all the time to be fair 😅

klimtchakra · 26/12/2024 23:32

Turkey is crap I agree. Much prefer a roast chicken or something beefy.

Sitting in a relatives house, who wont ever put the heating on, sat on a fold out chair, at a rickety table borrowed from the scout hut, is crap. Being gifted tat for teenage girls from your in laws, when you're pushing 40, is also pretty crap and I don't care if it sounds ungrateful. I've now got to get rid of a load of teen/tween crap plastic tat from B&N. I have lovely in laws but they buy an insane amount of tat for everyone at Christmas. Bags and bags full! Usually bought in the January sales so always almost slightly out of style/ugly/stuff that no one wanted full price.

Elf on the shelf? Get in the bin.

pictoosh · 26/12/2024 23:33

I'm moaning a lot on this thread, sound like a right misery.
I'm not. I LOVE Christmas. The tree, decorations, gifts for loved ones, rich food, fairy lights, drinks out, chocolate, party dresses...all good.

Hate landfill, competitive spending, debt, smug social media posts, tat, social pressure, women doing their pan in while the men reap the rewards, shopping shopping shopping, new traditions that cost money and time.

Quality over quantity for me. Less is more.

TheThreeCheesesOfTheApocalypse44 · 26/12/2024 23:37

My turkey was injected with butter and had bacon grease and chopped, streaky bacon rubbed under the skin before being covered with more smoked bacon. It was not shite and certainly wasn't dry.

Christmas jumper day
Elf on the shelf
Christmas Eve boxes

Recent additions to Christmas that put pressure on parents to spend, provide and perform.

I reckon it's a stressy, anxious, tiring time for many.

Bin the elf, not sure what a Christmas Eve box is. A jumper will last a year or two? Maybe not if kids grow admittedly.

pictoosh · 26/12/2024 23:39

"Oooh let's all go ice skating for Christmas. It will be fun!"
"That'll be £80 please."
"Ok"

ThatAgileLimeCat · 26/12/2024 23:39

New Year's Eve
Christmas Eve boxes and all the other social media perfect parent stuff such as the elf, and matching pjs.
Door bows. Like you're gift wrapping your house. Why?
Christmas cards
Sellotape. Necessary but always a bastard.

Love party food though. Bring on the beige. Also love Christmas pudding and Christmas crackers.

FussyPud · 26/12/2024 23:40

Wrapping, yes! After a few years of using the printed brown paper wrapping paper that can go straight in the recycle bin, I decided this year to get everyone a cotton festive sack and didn’t use any paper at all. It was so nice to just be able to decant things into the sacks, tie them up, and dispense as needed. I’m getting everyone a smaller birthday equivalent this year too, and hope to never see a roll of wrapping paper ever again!

TooManyChristmasCards · 26/12/2024 23:41

I agree with that, I buy a lot of turkey all year round, high protein low fat, what's not to like.

I like party food. No one is dictating what you should have, no one in my house would be that excited about turkey, potatoes and veg, so we don't have them for Christmas.

nocoolnamesleft · 26/12/2024 23:44

Turkey is not dry, or bland. Not if cooked properly.

AlmostAJillSandwich · 26/12/2024 23:50

You've just reminded me to cook my back up Crown thats todays date, cheers!

menopausalfart · 26/12/2024 23:50

I also hate crackers. Even the really expensive ones are a bag of shite.
I haven't had turkey for years. We always have chicken.

TwoSwansFromMyWindow · 26/12/2024 23:51

ShamblesRock · 26/12/2024 22:46

I've long stopped bothering with Turkey, and just get a chicken joint. Much easier and far less waste.

I buy fun crackers but my grumpy lot don't want to do the activity, they are definitely me trying to be worthy.

What on earth is a chicken joint? Do you not even buy a whole chicken?

mammaCh · 26/12/2024 23:53

Why get a turkey if you don't like it? We always get our favourite meat, which we adore!
Party food in our house is absolutely delicious. I've had Party food elsewhere which i found yuk.
Maybe bring a few things you like with if you go out?

Imbusytodaysorry · 26/12/2024 23:54

CorbyTrouserPress · 26/12/2024 23:03

Genuine question, of all the generic smelly sets on sale at Christmas why is it always only Bayliss and Harding that get the mumsnet hate?

I don’t like it . I’d rather a bottle of carex lol
I don’t see it as a gift.

GogAndMagog · 26/12/2024 23:54

I love turkey. The smell, the sandwiches. I always use the Phil Vickery method which leaves the juices seeping from the breast when you carve and makes an awesome gravy.

Essexg · 26/12/2024 23:56

We like turkey, no moans there. Also love some party food, especially the fishy ones.

What I thoroughly dislike is Babyliss and Harding hand cream, a friend always gives me some, it’s awful. She uses L’Ocittane herself and would use no other. Any and all other gifts are appreciated.

I also resent being expected always to be the one to travel to see folk. We welcome guests, would love to host here but oh no, because we always have we’re expected to be the ones on the motorway before sitting in a draughty spot on an uncomfortable chair dreading the trip back home.

We like people, we really do, we also like Christmas, just not the one that has been shaped for us. May rebel and head out of the country next year.

sweetydahling · 26/12/2024 23:57

Turkey and beige party food are not obligatory.

MogsSprog · 27/12/2024 00:07

Yanbu. I really dislike having to visit people I'm not keen enough on to see the rest of the year! Sitting squashed in a living room, counting down until we can go home...obligations to distant relatives etc.

I dont like the party food/canapés from supermarkets so just don't bother. Saves money too.

I like the Christmas TV programmes and films.

Usually a breast or leg joint, very common.....
