Shit Christmas Things.

Turkey - shit. There’s a reason we only eat it once a year because it’s terrible.

Party food - beige shit.

Venting because I’m not allowed to voice these opinions around DP’s relatives so have to lie every year and pretend like it’s all lovely. It’s not.

Anyone agree? Disagree? Have anything else they hate about Christmas they want to vent about?

My family does a lovely beef roast for Christmas.
We took a vote about 20 years ago and the turkey lost in a landslide.
The little kids were picky over the turkey and now their little kids are picky over the roast beef.
Sometimes you just can’t win.
I do miss those leftover turkey sandwiches, though.

FluffyPineapples · 27/12/2024 00:12

Real Christmas trees. A tree should be outside in the ground, not chopped down for the sake of being in your front room for a few weeks.

I know a lot are grown specifically for that purpose, but I can't help but feel they're such a waste. It always saddens me to see them so casually dumped and disposed of after Christmas has been and gone.

HereForTheAnimals · 27/12/2024 00:14

Yes. I think that parents who tell their children that all their presents are from Father Christmas are selfish fuckers who don't understand that other children will suffer because of their lies.

'If you are good, Father Christmas will bring you all you desire'...what about the kids who have nothing, have been good all year, and get sweet FA?

Duckswaddle · 27/12/2024 00:16

Definitely being forced to spend time with people you’d rather not! BIL and his girlfriend have just fucked off finally, I can now relax without having to put up with their tedious company.

CrispieCake · 27/12/2024 00:19

Men. NAMALT and all that, but a surprising number of men at Christmas seem to confuse themselves with the turkey and think they should be left to rest up in front of the telly for an hour or so before Christmas dinner.

Rather like the turkey through, you can check whether they're done by inserting a sharp skewer into the leg and that usually wakes them up.

pictoosh · 27/12/2024 00:19

@FluffyPineapples
Have you read The Fir Tree by Hans Christian Anderson?
I warn you, it's an absolute heartbreaker.

Arrwedancers · 27/12/2024 00:23

Having to be happy to please everyone else, it feels so false and I'm sure most other people feel the same way and everyone is acting

Yesiknowdear · 27/12/2024 00:31

Putting the presents away.
Always putting the presents away. I hate it.

I’m perfectly happy with a B and H gift set. I’m clearly easily pleased. They are useful, saves me buying shower/bath products!

Edited

I do love the smell of an B and H gift set and would prefer to receive that in a secret Santa that some of the horrors I’ve seen on here and TikTok!

Absolutely agree with the beige buffet food! Cannot stand the stuff! Hate it even more at Christmas because it suddenly because expensive beige crap!

Have to disagree on the turkey though! We’ve always cooked it to the exact timings recommended on a “roast timer” app or web page and removed from the oven as soon as the timer rings and checked the internal temp with a meat thermometer - without that, there would always be the temptation to leave it in the oven for another 15 mins to be sure and also be a sure way to dry it out. It’s always tasty and not dry. This year, we popped our meater thermometer in the oven whilst cooking and it was cooked 25 mins before the recommended cooking time on the apps etc! We trusted the process and it was absolutely delicious. We are lucky enough to have a local butcher that is very similar in price to the supermarket.

My personal hate is elf on the shelf. We’re lucky enough to have avoided it so far.

Splat92 · 27/12/2024 00:32

Never eaten a turkey I liked so we don't do it.

Not a fan of Elf on the Shelf. It was fun when it started but it's just boring now.

Adult presents. I don't want to buy them or receive them (apart from a box of fancy chocolates from my DH). Especially when we have made an agreement with other adults to not do presents and they then on the day they show up with a present anyway.

Caswallonthefox · 27/12/2024 00:40

Haven't had turkey since I first had goose 20 years ago. Been either duck or chicken since.
I hated family Christmases, there was around 20 people and I inevitably had bronchitis.
Now I'm on my own and it passes my by as if its another day.
I do still look at NORAD's santa tracker though.

DrFoxtrot · 27/12/2024 00:42

CorbyTrouserPress · 26/12/2024 23:01

I genuinely like turkey and eat it throughout the year.

Me too! I have turkey salad for lunch 2-3 times a week all year round.

Tearsricochet · 27/12/2024 00:46

I LOVE my Christmas dinner, including the turkey. I’m having a turkey sandwich for lunch tomorrow and already looking forward to it.

I dislike very little about Xmas. It’s my favourite time of year.

Things I agree with from this thread though - overpriced Xmas markets. Why can’t they just be genuinely nice and fairly priced?

Being forced / feeling obliged to spend time with people I would rather not. I am trying to be better at not doing this, though the pressure is immense. And I’m not a horrible person so wouldn’t have BIL on his own even though he is lazy, doesn’t contribute financially or in any way really. This frustrates me and I started to feel resentful. Which I don’t want to feel.

Christmas Eve boxes are a waste of money - we fill a gift bag on the 1st December instead with Christmas jammies and other Christmas themed things that my kids use during December - fancier hot chocolate, Christmas slipper socks, nice Christmas sweets / chocolate, christmas mug etc No plastic tat and I try to limit it to items that are useful.

Party food is generally rotten and bland…some exceptions - I don’t mind a halloumi fry or tempura prawn 🤣 I much prefer nice dips, olives, cured meat, smoked salmon blinis etc.

What I don’t like is the pressure to get everything done. I put a lot of pressure on myself to have a pristine house - only for people to come and it to be an absolute tip!!

The elf doesn’t bother me. It’s fun for the kids

Tearsricochet · 27/12/2024 00:47

Jeez sorry that was a long reply

Angrymum22 · 27/12/2024 00:47

I’m heading to M&S tomorrow to buy some beige food. Actually just the mushroom vol au vents. When I saw them advertised it took me back 30 odd years to my late mums superb Christmas spreads ( she would have nailed Great British Bake Off, she was so talented). We lost her 28yrs ago and there isn’t a year goes by when I don’t miss her baking.
We are having a very quiet Christmas this year but so far I nailed the turkey and the roast potatoes. Just a joint of beef for the weekend and Yorkshire puddings ( I’m a purist so don’t serve Yorkshire puddings with anything else.
I recently used my air fryer to roast a joint of beef it was amazing. Not sure this one will fit though. I used wagyu beef dripping from Aldi for the roast potatoes and they were delicious so I need to pop in and buy more. It will be perfect for the Yorkshire puddings.

TheThreeCheesesOfTheApocalypse44 · 26/12/2024 23:37

My turkey was injected with butter and had bacon grease and chopped, streaky bacon rubbed under the skin before being covered with more smoked bacon. It was not shite and certainly wasn't dry.

Ha ha 🤣 that's a lot of extra ingredients and work to make a dry tasteless turkey start to be edible.

Devilcat · 27/12/2024 01:06

Poor turkey I blame Matthew’s. Let’s work hard all year and kill an animal and stress over it I’m not a veggie I wanted lamb. What I got was a dry turkey I cooked 😂. Never again 👍

invisiblebark · 27/12/2024 01:07

Had turkey at FILs this year. It was delicious.

Wrapping paper is great. I'd hate to receive unwrapped gifts. The unwrapping is a massive part of the fun.

I love pretty much all of Christmas.

My only two dislikes are:

Christmas markets. We went to the one in Bruges this year. The crowds were awful, the market itself was underwhelming, and the queues meant you couldn't get near the stalls anyway.

I had a second dislike, but it can't have been that bad because I've forgotten it already!

WishinAndHopin · 27/12/2024 01:11

I hate Christmas TV with all the endless films, specials etc. I just want regular TV schedules back. Especially true crime and police programmes.

As for turkey- been a veggie my whole life so I don’t get it. It seems like a stupid American tradition that has been imported over here.

Roast dinners aren’t my favourite anyway as I prefer spicy food.

Peasnbeans · 27/12/2024 01:15

ForMintUser · 26/12/2024 22:46

So I think the one that I ate was from M&S so just supermarket crap, cooked a full on Norfolk Bronze before, paid a fortune from the butcher, spent ages prepping and resting. It’s still turkey. Which is shit.

Go to a farmer, buy one not killed in October (at latest)
I kid you not.

Agoodhaircut · 27/12/2024 01:17

Pre-made shop bought party food is totally shit. It's all beige colour
Xmas tv is shit. I've recorded G&S and Wallace and gromit but not watched either yet
27th - 31st is shit. Boring. Nothing going on.
Nye is shit and over hyped
Bayliss & harding is cheap nasty shit
Xmas pjs/Xmas eve boxes all shit
Elf on the shelf is the shittiest thing ever
The grinch is utter shite

Devilcat · 27/12/2024 01:22

I love your overuse of shit. It’s right it’s all shite.

chaosmaker · 27/12/2024 01:42

December is ruined by xmas every year

Cattenberg · 27/12/2024 01:43

I agree about (most) Christmas music.

I don’t like that Christmas normally falls short of our expectations. This year, as well as the usual arguments and petty disappointments, we’ve had… Christmas flu.

Mince pies and Christmas pudding. If they weren’t full of festive nostalgia I’d never bother with either.

I can’t decide if panto is a great British Christmas tradition or something really naff and dreadful.

ForGreyKoala · 27/12/2024 01:46

This thread just goes to prove that Christmas is wasted on some people.

I don't remember any Christmas I've not enjoyed.
