Turkey - shit. There’s a reason we only eat it once a year because it’s terrible.

Party food - beige shit.

Venting because I’m not allowed to voice these opinions around DP’s relatives so have to lie every year and pretend like it’s all lovely. It’s not.

Anyone agree? Disagree? Have anything else they hate about Christmas they want to vent about?

OP posts:

Christmas jumper day
Elf on the shelf
Christmas Eve boxes

Recent additions to Christmas that put pressure on parents to spend, provide and perform.

I reckon it's a stressy, anxious, tiring time for many.

Dogdaycommeth · 26/12/2024 23:03

I love turkey... all turkey even dry turkey.
I do think party food is shit. I am so disappointed every time i buy it. Except party desserts. I like all desserts.
I always think christmas cheese is disappointing. I always envisage my cheeseboard to be this thing of beauty but in actual fact I don't properly plan it then stuff some cheese into my Tesco order and it ends up pretty shit. Next year I'll plan.

doneandone · 26/12/2024 23:03

This was the first year I didn't bother with a Turkey and had chicken instead.
I hate wrapping, it always starts off well but towards the end they look crap!
Baylis and fucking Harding gift sets! I got 3 of the bloody things, they'll be put to one side and donated to the next raffle.

Notouchingmybhuna · 26/12/2024 22:59

Bayliss and Harding gift sets.

Genuine question, of all the generic smelly sets on sale at Christmas why is it always only Bayliss and Harding that get the mumsnet hate?

Dontlletmedownbruce · 26/12/2024 23:04

Biscuit boxes that are 80% plastic moulding. I opened one the other day and there was only 2 of each type, ridiculous.

comedia24 · 26/12/2024 23:06

@SoNiceToComeHomeTo like it - I've used parcel wrapping paper from stuff that's been delivered in the past and also - thrown a blanket over things!

Oooh yes I hate spy elf on the shelf...

dontforgetme · 26/12/2024 23:06

I love turkey and I love beige shit party food 😂

YourGladSquid · 26/12/2024 23:06

I think spending big money on gifts for Christmas is dumb as hell because then the sales start straight away. It’s pointless.

sweatband · 26/12/2024 23:06

In laws, I'll leave it there

I think it's because their tagline should be "Bayliss and Harding...it's a gesture."

Even though the products actually smell nice and do what they say on the tin, they're the go-to brand for inexpensive, convenient presents.

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 26/12/2024 23:08

Don't like that little cunt Elf on a shelf.

Don't like turkey, so don't eat it.

Don't send many cards as they are too expensive to post. £1.60 for a stamp...no wonder Royal Mail has been in trouble for years.

Enigma52 · 26/12/2024 23:10

Notouchingmybhuna · 26/12/2024 22:59

Bayliss and Harding gift sets.

Yes! They need banning. Bloody awful.

WhatMe123 · 26/12/2024 23:10

Amount of plastic packaging on kids toys and how. Bloody hard it it to get into them
🙈

Scutterbug · 26/12/2024 23:11

I’m perfectly happy with a B and H gift set. I’m clearly easily pleased. They are useful, saves me buying shower/bath products!

AnyoneSomeone · 26/12/2024 23:11

What I hate about Christmas is that MN turns into the most miserable place. Full of people fucking moaning about Christmas.

Before Royal Mail was privatised the cost of stamps went up roughly in line with inflation. Since privatisation the cost has gone up about double inflation.

Elf on a shelf is a bellend and can fuck right off.

suki1964 · 26/12/2024 23:13

OMG I do love my turkey dinner, we actually have turkey a few times during the year, we all like it

Party food - well yep thats always been pure shite, a way to part a fool from their money without trying

username299 · 26/12/2024 23:13

The consumerism.

Yeah. It's because everyone knows you can pick them up from Tesco when you're there for milk.

If it's say Champneys from Boots I know it cost more than £6 and it won't make my skin feel like I've used paint thinner.

TBF their Goodness range is lovely.

pictoosh · 26/12/2024 23:14

All the Christmas hits played endlessly wherever you go.
Christmas films...I can't think of any genuinely good ones that are worth repeated viewing.

Me too! My stepson gave me one and l was more than happy with it!

UpHillVerySlowly · 26/12/2024 23:15

I hate that it highlights my misanthropic nature for all to see! I feel like a clichéd moaning, passive aggressive Mum and Wifey. Thank f**k it's over.

GinToBegin · 26/12/2024 23:20

Wasn’t B&H a pound shop Molton Brown when it first came out? It seems quite pricey now for what it is. We’ve got some of their hand lotion, and it’s the weirdest stuff, a bit like watery paint. It feels thin and loose, but just doesn’t sink in. Odd.

But even if it was lovely, a B&H set reeks of Will This Do?

Hollowvoice · 26/12/2024 23:20

Honestly the only thing I've hated this Christmas is clearing up the kitchen for three days straight!
I've loved having all the different people over at different times over the days and all the presents and fun. I'm knackered now though!

SpanielRadcliffe · 26/12/2024 23:20

Party food - beige shit.

Isn't most of the food that people eat every day beige or beige-adjacent - white, cream, ecru, light-to-medium brown, light pink or peach?

Beige-ish:
most bread/rolls/muffins/tortillas/pizza base
Most pasta
Most noodles
Most rice and other grains
Most fish and seafood

Not beige at all:
Vegetables, with a few exceptions like turnip and parsnip
Fruit, with a few exceptions like banana, apple, pear, coconut
Purple potatos
Black noodles
Red meat
Some mushrooms
A few grains/seeds, like corn or black chia

What are some other good non-beige vegetarian or vegan foodstuffs?
