Xmas day morning - AIBU here?

Staying at my parents’ house for Christmas with dp and dd (3), my sister is also here.
Sat around on Xmas Eve chatting about the order of the day tomorrow. I assume my dd will wake early (6ish) and I’m happy for her to have her stocking when she wakes up. I said ‘oh, she’ll probably have everyone up as she’ll be excited and want to show you all what she’s got’. Just got a groan from df, and pointed silence from dm and dsis said ‘she can show me stuff but I’m not getting up’. So if they have their way it’ll be me and dp getting up with dd to do stocking and them emerging 2/3 hours later.
AIBU to think that this is slightly mean spirited on Christmas Day?
They would never dream of letting us having a lie in by taking dd in the morning normally (obviously wouldn’t want that in Xmas day as I want to be there!) and refuse to get up before 8 when we come to stay, even if we’re up for ages before then. My dp’s mum would be so excited to get up with us and dd on Christmas morning and open her stocking. Am I making a bit deal out of nothing? I just feel a bit disappointed by my family but maybe I need to accept that other people just aren’t going to be as interested/excited about my kid as I would like! What would your Xmas morning routine be with your wider family?

Oh catch yourself on, you're the parents, you fucking get up - don't expect anyone else to!! Never heard such entitlement and selfishness!!!

TG none of my children ever got up at sparrow's fart on Christmas Day, and it took years to educate my MIL that her early morning call that woke the whole house was not welcome!

Your young child doesn't rule the house!

Screamingabdabz · 25/12/2024 00:37

6am is ridiculous. My DC were told it was too early and to go back to bed. They were excited but its a tiring long day for everyone so they had to wait until at least 7.30-8 am.

StarlightStalagmite · 25/12/2024 00:37

I think yabu. I think of stockings as little gifts to open on parents bed before the day properly starts. I'd say do stocking then breakfast for little one and play a bit then everyone will be up for tree presents.

EntropyCentral · 25/12/2024 00:39

If they don't want to get up and share the present opening excitement, that's their call, but they shouldn't be surprised if next year you stay at your own place or go to your MIL

As a grandmother I wouldn't mind at all if they chose to stay at home, or go somewhere else for a change. But they don't. They ALWAYS choose to come here. Make of that what you will.

I’ve got two under 6 and I’m not getting up at 6am. You're being daft, they shouldn’t lose two hours sleep on a long day so you don’t have to entertain one by yourself.

So if they have their way it’ll be me and dp getting up with dd to do stocking and them emerging 2/3 hours later.

What’s wrong with that? You get up with her, she’s yours, you’ll be with DP, she can do her stocking and play with her new things, you can enjoy that, she can open more things once everyone else is up.

and if the stocking contains anything noisy, take it out for later in the day.

Didimum · 25/12/2024 00:42

Christ, no. I wouldn’t expect anyone to get up at 6am. You need to teach your child a little bit of patience – even on Christmas morning.

Across three generations in my family. Kid wakes up, kid rips into stocking, with or without parent around to help, depending on age. Wider family expected to join in? Nope, nope , no way!

But you have manners and don't expect to bend everyone to your will!

yipyipyop · 25/12/2024 00:44

Ffs 6am! I wouldn't get up at that time for my own children on Christmas Day never mind someone else's. It's the crack of dawn. I wouldn't expect other family members to be up at that time and be excited about it.

Discombobble · 25/12/2024 00:44

When I was little the point of your Christmas stocking was to keep you occupied until it was a civilised time to get up!

unmemorableusername · 25/12/2024 00:44

6am is too early. Stockings with you then.

I would t expect the whole family to be up and ready to watch her open her gifts until 10 am.

EntropyCentral · 25/12/2024 00:46

My dp’s mum would be so excited to get up with us and dd on Christmas morning and open her stocking

Are you sure? Doesn't sound like you've actually ever stayed there xmas eve.

Anywherebuthere · 25/12/2024 00:48

6 is far too early to get up to look at presents being opened. Especially when there is a long day ahead.

EntropyCentral · 25/12/2024 00:49

Must admit that when they were very little I probably woke at that time.
But I'd let them open their stocking stuff and then get them into bed with me to avoid waking the whole house up.

Ratisshortforratthew · 25/12/2024 00:49

Good grief. There are very few things that would get me out of bed at 6am and watching a kid being indoctrinated into the cult of materialism is definitely not one of them. I’m very glad I don’t have nieces or nephews if this is the kind of crap some people expect! Similarly I can’t bear this “Christmas is all about children” mentality, what, so everyone else has to have an annoying and tiring time just because they’re over 10? It’s meant to be a break for everyone!

Hwi · 25/12/2024 00:50

When will parents realise that their child's reaction to festive gifts is of no interest to anyone else, apart from themselves? No, don't get me wrong, grandparents dote on the little ones, they are interested in their health, their school/kindergarten achievements, but not in the reaction to opening their presents. It reminds me of Timmy, the Spoilt Bastard in Viz and his routines.

blackpear · 25/12/2024 00:51

I’m with your parents. They have all day once they get up to spend with your child.

EntropyCentral · 25/12/2024 00:52

Yeah. They're your kids. Let the rest of us sleep.

Justkeepingplatesspinning · 25/12/2024 00:53

Your parents are like mine were. We weren't allowed out of bed on Christmas day until they told us we could get up, then we had to eat breakfast and go to church before we were allowed any presents. I still dread Christmas now, and it's never been an enjoyable day for me. So your child is fortunate to have you!
If it's the first time they've been with your child for Christmas morning then it's a shame they won't be up to see her excitement from the get go.

EntropyCentral · 25/12/2024 00:57

That sounds joyless and depressing and makes me feel sad for you.

However, it's not anywhere near OP's situation.

Nogaxeh · 24/12/2024 23:16

I always felt that the point of a stocking was to provide a child with enough small presents to keep them entertained and in bed for a few hours so that they would not get up until the adults were ready for them to do so.

My mum always put a book in mine, a chocolate orange and one of my favourite drinks, I would open it when I woke up and start the book
Now I realise she just wanted the extra time in bed Grin

EntropyCentral · 25/12/2024 00:58

Clever Mummy.

PyongyangKipperbang · 25/12/2024 01:00

Kids are like weddings. Everyone thinks that theirs is the centre of the world and should be treated as such, but doesnt give much of a shit about anyone elses. I say this as a mother of a large family!

So, YABU.

WalterdelaMare · 25/12/2024 01:03

Sod that. One of the best things about no longer having small kids is that you don’t have to get up early.

You might be excited for your child and happy to be up at 6, but don’t expect anyone else to be.

AngryPrincess · 25/12/2024 01:06

Just enjoy a nice wee time with just your little family before the others get up.

CrispieCake · 25/12/2024 01:07

This is why we keep the kids up super-late on Christmas Eve. Mine went off to bed just before 11 and won't be up until around 10am tomorrow, probably after all the adults. At which point they will do their stockings surrounded by well-rested, familial, doting adoration. I realise this wouldn't work for all families though 😂.
