That’s so kind of your dp giving cards to all his customers 🙏

He is aware that he has a lot of older people on his round who may not get many or indeed any cards. He also gives a little gift to the first person who gives him a card and some extra bits for some of the children who write him cards. And he’d kill me for telling you because he’s really humble!

There’s one in the city near us that says it’s open till 9pm! If that’s right, it’s pretty shite for the people that work there.

Yes it is! Bet most of these workers don’t drive or have family that can pick them up. Buses finished 5-6pm most places and taxis are double.

Retailers will not pay for taxis either

TooBigForMyBoots · 24/12/2024 19:30

I wasn’t going to start fighting people for cheap meat.

Ooh get you, Lady Muck. Too posh to fight for meat eh? Mumsnet has changed you @Noodlehen.🤨

JMSA · 24/12/2024 19:31

I went to my local M&S Food at 5.30pm this evening. It closed at 7pm.
All the Christmassy food was still full price, and I assume remained that way until closing.
Bonkers.

Globules · 24/12/2024 19:32

Damn this thread.

When daughter asked at 6.30pm if we had smoked salmon for tomorrow, I realised I'd would like some too. So I hotfooted down to m&S that closed at 7pm.

No salmon, but 50p treacle tarts, £1 moussaka, £1.50 sherry trifle. No room in my freezer for the £20 turkey crowns reduced from £70.

Dropped into Tesco for the salmon in the end 🤣

P00hsticks · 24/12/2024 18:40

Why on earth are they reducing bottles of white wine ?
It's not like it's going to go past its sell by date ....

Edited

The wine was the end of Christmas line items.

Auburngal · 24/12/2024 19:34

You are going to get lots of normal food reduced after Christmas. As people are still eating turkey/cold cuts and still going round to family.

I have bought things like sausage meat after Christmas. It was on clearance as getting rid of Xmas stuff and reduced as that day’s date

Some insane person is going to get a steal on a whole fresh mirror carp! I kid you not. Who the Fluff is buying this? Don’t even fishermen throw them
back?! There was a fridge full!

I think it's an Eastern European thing. Big Polish population in your area?

Carp is a Polish Christmas delicacy.

Aye, normally I would send the housekeeper to fight for me, but we gave her Christmas off 😉

WhosBob · 24/12/2024 19:53

I got some pizzas for £1.24 and a large apple pie for 99p! This was at around 2pm and there were plenty of apple pies left

Peachy2005 · 24/12/2024 19:57

DS17 and I went in to M&S for a nosey today about 5.15 (closing at 6) as it gave him a chance to practice driving and get out of the house. He used to work there till a few weeks ago: he was aghast at how many turkeys were left, mostly half-price but still expensive because he said even if they let the staff buy them for pennies, there were way too many. Hopefully some stuff might go to Food Bank or Community Fridge. I think a £95 turkey was £54 at that point but that’s still expensive enough. A lot were £40. We were vindicated for the reduced stuff we bought yesterday as none of that was there tonight. There were no reduced desserts this evening but loads yesterday. There were a few of the expensive seafood starters left today but nothing we would have wanted. There was 1 2-pack Lobster Thermidor reduced from £50 to £20, but didn’t look like much in it for £20. Lots of reduced veg and veg boxes, none of which we needed.

The one thing I wanted: the Cranberry and Clementine Bucks Fizz hadn’t come back in 😏

Pasithean · 24/12/2024 19:57

They where marking stuff down as they where putting it out at our m and s , that was at 7.30 am

Lobstercrisps · 24/12/2024 19:59

I saw this thread earlier today. And so when I was passing our city centre food hall earlier I nipped in for a turkey joint for Friday when our relatives come for lunch.

BB date is 26th but I'm sure it will be fine by Friday lunchtime.

Lobstercrisps · 24/12/2024 20:00

There was a £145 turkey for £85 on the shelf too. Bargain if you are feeding a lot of people!

Eastie77Returns · 24/12/2024 20:11

Our local Waitrose had loads of yellow stickers at 10am today. But it’s Waitrose so even with the stickers most of the prices were outrageous😅

Admire the brave late shoppers. I was in Sainsbury’s at 6.45 this morning. Finished my shopping by 7.30am and I’ve had a chilled rest of the day (after a quick detour to Waitrose to pick up some Brandy cream for the Minced Pies). Currently nursing my second glass of Baileys with my feet up.

Fruitbatdancer · 24/12/2024 20:15

Well every day is a school day! (Carp!) not as bonkers as I imagined!

B&m earlier was clearing the christmas stuff off shelves and had easter eggs out. Honestly I wish i was joking

I work in b&m. Can confirm this is true
We heavily condensed down our Christmas aisles. But it was bare bones for most of the day

Presumably they would only reduce it if going out of date in the next 2 days? Most stuff people will still be eating for a week or 2

Cherrysoup · 24/12/2024 20:31

In the past few weeks, we must have hit Sainsbury at exactly the right time because we walked away with stupid amounts of salmon fillets and steak, fishcakes for really low prices. We’ve had a job fitting everything in the freezers, the biggest is always full of dog food. A very large chicken is defrosting for tomorrow, I popped it in the fridge as per recommendation and my DH has taken it out again in case it doesn’t defrost in time. Oh lord! Have I ruined Christmas?! 🤣

exLtEveDallas · 24/12/2024 20:31

My M&S was a bust, lots of reductions but still really expensive (I suppose it is M&S after all) so I nipped off to Sainsburys and got some bargains - some salmon for £1.40, a dessert for £3 from £12, some 75p coleslaw for Boxing Day and a party platter thing, scallops and Mac n cheese down to £4 something from about £12. Oh and some banana pancakes for breakfast for 50p!

ColdwarKatherine · 24/12/2024 20:33

£21 profiterole dessert down to £4:20.
Serves 10 - but unfortunately only the kids are interested in it.
Still bought it though . They can eat it tonight & tomorrow.

When did you take it out? A very large chicken needs at least 48 hours defrosting in the fridge. I’d probably keep out for four hours and then pop back in for another four and alternate that through the night. I wouldn’t trust it left out the whole time.

If you sign up for olio you can get pretty good stuff regularly from supermarkets. You can sign up to be the person who collects the stuff that is about to go off say once a week. Then you can have 10% of the stuff you want and then you list the rest on the app and others can pick it up off your doorstep. All for free. Any left over the day after, you can't list but can use or give to friends and family.

Amazing way to prevent food wastage and get some free stuff all year!

CuriouslyMinded · 24/12/2024 20:45

Our bargain of the day was an M&S brownie wreath (about 16 small luxury brownies) reduced from £15.50 to £3.20!

Have a lovely Christmas everyone x
