Absolutely do not show up at any business right at closing time on Christmas. It's incredibly rude and inconsiderate to the employees.

ChronicallySleepy · 24/12/2024 16:52

I went to my local M&S earlier and it was busy but not as bad as I expected. Lots of offers on meat and Christmas treats

Starseeking · 24/12/2024 17:00

Just got to my M&S, staff are offloading everything that expires on 25 and 26 to mark down out the back.

I have over £100 worth of seafood (lobster/king prawn/scallops) exporting on 26 which would be an absolute treat, in my trolley, identical items of which I've seen go out the back with the staff.

Debating whether to:

  • give my items to the staff to take out the back risking it never to be seen again when it comes back out; or
  • hold on until the identical stuff comes back out and ask the staff for an identical price ticket so I don't lose hold of it 🧐

That made me think of Viz magazine ‘top tips’ (in a good way)

'Avoid Boxing Day constipation by not eating nine Scotch eggs for breakfast' etc...

Carolina - some people just don’t care. My son works in a supermarket during the college holidays. A posh one! He does the all day and evening shift until 2100 on Saturday.

His regulars are a couple who claim they are millionaires and come in late for the yellow stickers. They literally wait by the door the trollies come through and push anyone else out of the way. The other selfish arsehole is a man who almost every Saturday turns up at 2050, grabs a big trolley and despite the announcements saying the store is closing needs to be followed around and told the store is shut and still he won’t be rushed.

Son is on the till waiting to close and this man makes a point of behaving like he has all the time on the world. A few times he even loads his trolley and claims he has forgotton a few things. The straight talking supervisor told him once they were closed and he made a formal complaint about her.

These people are everywhere.

YellowPixie · 24/12/2024 17:05

DH has just been to the local Co-Op for milk and has come back with a few things about 65% off - nothing particularly festive, 2 x packs of salmon and 2 x packs of chicken breast, some smoked fish and sausages.

Starlightstarbright4 · 24/12/2024 17:08

I have nipped to Morrison’s and Aldi.. not much in Morrisons . Aldi they were pulling a lot from the shelves ready for closing . Loads of bargains though will fill my freezer 🥳

We have similar plans.

We are playing cheese roulette. We have no cheese in. We need cheese.

I've got cheese.

I've just posted on the cheese board.

Cheese board - Arf!

Funkyslippers · 24/12/2024 17:14

Just been to Aldi. Lots of crates of fruit & veg 75% off, eg avocados, white grapes, rocket, satsumas, baby tomatoes. A fellow shopper told me this was her 3rd trip of the day & she'd been told that all the 30% discounted meat & fish would he 50% at the till. So we stocked up & realised after thar it went through at 30% but hey ho. Got half price cheesecake & they did have half price turkey crowns but didn't bother, they would still have been £20

Not got room in the fridge or freezer for any more food but I did pick up some Christmas cards yesterday in WH Smith’s. Pack of 30 reduced from £3.99 to £1. DP is a postie and sends about 600 to his customers so he was pleased with the 6 boxes for next year.

That’s so kind of your dp giving cards to all his customers 🙏

Xmasiscomingagain · 24/12/2024 17:17

DH has just set off for our M&S which closes at 6. Last few years have been rubbish but there was one year we lucked out and got some real bargains.

ShanghaiDiva · 24/12/2024 17:18

Dh and ds do this every year. Have bought an M&S £80 Turkey for £20.

There’s one in the city near us that says it’s open till 9pm! If that’s right, it’s pretty shite for the people that work there.

It is, isn't it. I think we should go back tge days when most things shut at 4 on Christmas Eve

Bloom15 · 24/12/2024 17:30

biscuitsandbooks · 24/12/2024 14:30

I can't believe you can all be arsed, frankly. I won't be leaving the sofa, let alone the house!

Exactly! I made it to the pub and hairdressers

Gem359 · 24/12/2024 17:30

Went to Waitrose 45 minutes ago, it was shite. Some turkeys reduced to £48, some nibbles of beef on a stick reduced to 6 pound something and 80p off this and that. Seriously wish we hadn't bothered but remembered the year we got several whole chickens for next to nothing.

VivienneDelacroix · 24/12/2024 17:50

Husbandrippedmeoff · 24/12/2024 14:16

That's fantastic!

But also really sad. So wasteful to have chopped so many down that they have to reduce to a penny. Does anyone who's planning to put up a tree really not have it before today?

SlingingArrows · 24/12/2024 17:58

We went at 2.30 and it was surprisingly not absolutely rammed, ended up with:
Dauphinois potatoes £2 from £10
Croissants / pain au chocs 60p from £2.50
Best ever tikka masala £2.77 from £6.50
Chocolate mousse cakes £1.77 from £4.50

So much more I could have bought but no room in the fridge/freezer!

ITSSSSCHRISTMASSS · 24/12/2024 17:59

Turning up at a shop an hour before it’s due to close for Christmas is pretty bloody shit on the staff who will have to stay until everyone has gone.

All retail shops, if they have to be open Christmas Eve should close by 2pm, earlier if they can. Go back to the times people could go home at a decent time on Christmas Eve. Also close pubs and restaurants Christmas night and all shops closed Boxing Day.

If things have to open, staff should be paid time and a half or double time for working.

villanova · 24/12/2024 18:00

I've done 4 supermarkets this afternoon: 1 as it was on the way for another errand, and 3 are in walking distance so I get my steps in by walking a circuit. Bargains in each, but nothing spectacular. Not worried, as we have enough food already, the 60% off dougnuts & choc muffins were about the best. Couldn't find any reduced flowers. I thought the mega bargains of years past weren't replicated nowadays due to better stock control systems, but seems like they still happen in other cities!

AInightingale · 24/12/2024 18:00

I think it was the norm back in the fifties and before that to put a real tree up on Christmas Eve and keep it up until 6th January. Even in the 70s I don't remember ours going up much earlier than a week before. I prefer that idea really to the rather strange and unfestive practice of putting an artificial tree up in mid November and taking it down on Boxing Day. And a real tree up weeks before Christmas would be in a sad state by now.

AuxArmesCitoyens · 24/12/2024 18:03

I used to have a friend whose husband worked in a chilled food distribution centre. He would be allowed to take home all the unsold stock and gave us a whole-ass turkey and smoked salmon, paté etc. Happy times.

OrangeSlices998 · 24/12/2024 18:10

M&S turkey joint half price, reduced stuffing, yorkshires, seafood, cakes, cheese. Will never not try and get most stuff on 23/24, the bargains are good! Our M&S shuts at 6 so I went at 4 and the girl on the till said she’s working till 9!

Brittaniagirl · 24/12/2024 18:14

fivebyfivebuffy · 24/12/2024 14:04

I need some milk and was going to have a look while I was out
My options are
Booths
M&S
Aldi

Can't decide! Booths and Aldi do too good to go bags so they might have all the good stuff in there...

Oh I love Booths, you must be near my hometown… none in the South where I live now

Globules · 24/12/2024 18:16

4pm, I went to the post office inside the Morrisons daily.

12 "best of" sausages £2
3 x "best of" ready meals. £1 each.
2 x £10 bottles of white wine, £3.50 each.

Noodlehen · 24/12/2024 18:20

Went into Waitrose, got a pork fillet half price and a pack of marinated chicken breast for 99p. There was a tonne on the shelf, as well as meatballs etc for 99p and a woman got her kids to block either side and cleared the shelf. I wasn’t going to start fighting people for cheap meat 😂😂

popped down to M&S and got a great haul, £120 worth of food for just under £30.

best bargains were the steak pie, trifle and chicken cordon bleu all at c75% off. The lurpaks were 30p each. Left loads on the shelf, the sausage meat too - there was an aisle full so wasn’t greedy taking four 😉
