Debit card won’t work in machine or chip and pin and won’t tap

Whattodonexttoday · 23/12/2024 09:48

I have no other cards, it is also what I use to travel by tapping. No cash money at home.

Are banks open today? What can I do next?

I don’t want this card cancelled whilst they send out a new one, it still needs to work for my online orders while this is being sorted out.

What’s the easiest fastest way to get this sorted?

Quite stressed with other things going on and not feeling very well today, so not thinking as clearly as usual. It is a long walk to nearest bank, but it’s doable. Please advise me.

Phone the bank? Maybe it's just needing unblocked.

TwinkleLights24 · 23/12/2024 09:50

Apple Pay?

Favour237 · 23/12/2024 09:50

Connect the card to your phone for contactless payments then tap with that

It’s a few years old and is a bit bent out of shape and has lots of big scratches. I am almost certain it is not blocked, no unusual activity in my account.

I would ring your bank in the first instance

EVHead · 23/12/2024 09:51

Set it up on your phone.

Thebusinesswilljuststealyoursoul · 23/12/2024 09:52

Load Google/Apple pay onto your phone. As there are no security issues, your card is valid. You will be able to tap your phone for buses, shops ect. You will be able to get cashback from some supermarkets self serve tills( I'm pretty sure Asda do it)
It's a normal working day today so ring your bank and tell them you need a new card, but it's just the chip, you don't have security issues. I had to do the same when my card stopped working. It was no problem.

gamerchick · 23/12/2024 09:52

Go to the bank and get money out over the counter. Then order a new card when everything has been done

Will this still work if there is no sim card in my phone?

Have you checked if it’s been frozen in your banking app? For some reason I managed to do this once and I’ve still no clue how!

You usually need to make one chip and pin payment before you can use it for phone contactless payments. At least I did with mine.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 23/12/2024 09:54

This is a normal banking day, so ring your bank.

Why is there no sim card? Don't make life difficult for yourself, you have enough going on.

It’s a long story but there is no SIM card.

If for some reason your card security is compromised and they have to send a new one, ask someone to lend you some money via PayPal and then use that to pay for things online (though not all retailers accept PayPal so check first). Alternatively get someone to buy you Amazon vouchers.

So get a new one? They're free or you can get cheap monthly sim only deals.

RedRiverShore5 · 23/12/2024 09:57

You don't know there isn't a security issue unless you contact your bank. I had a problem setting my card up for Apple Pay and had to ring the bank, it was because there were too many 'tokens' whatever they are, some security thing they had to clear. It could be anything.

HotCrossBunplease · 23/12/2024 09:59

Apple/Google pay work without phone reception- there is often no reception in a tube station where you tap in and out. I presume that means they’d also work with no SIM.

The compartment in the phone where you place the SIM card is broken. Not able to buy new phone for a while. Thankfully still works fine on Wi-Fi.

I have no pay pal account and there is no one to ask for money, last time I was in a tight, the only person I could ask sad no.

Oh, I can also withdraw money from an ATM without my card, it’s an option on the app. Here’s how the RBS version works.

Debit card won’t work in machine or chip and pin and won’t tap
RedRiverShore5 · 23/12/2024 10:04

If there is a problem with your card and it is difficult to ring the bank you could go to your bank and they will give you cash, depending on what is in your bank account

HotCrossBunplease · 23/12/2024 10:05

I hear what you say about nobody to lend the money but you can transfer the cash to the person instantly via online banking.

Also, if you can post on Mumsnet you can set up a PayPal account.

Snackpocket · 23/12/2024 10:05

Of course banks are open, today is a normal working day. If the card is that knackered you'll have to have a replacement. If you are concerned about payments already set up going through its probably best to go into a branch and withdraw cash at the desk and then order a new card once those payments have gone through.
