Debit card won’t work in machine or chip and pin and won’t tap

Whattodonexttoday · 23/12/2024 09:48

I have no other cards, it is also what I use to travel by tapping. No cash money at home.

Are banks open today? What can I do next?

I don’t want this card cancelled whilst they send out a new one, it still needs to work for my online orders while this is being sorted out.

What’s the easiest fastest way to get this sorted?

Quite stressed with other things going on and not feeling very well today, so not thinking as clearly as usual. It is a long walk to nearest bank, but it’s doable. Please advise me.

Which bank is it so posters can give good advice like @HotCrossBunplease has, different things apply with different banks

PheasantPluckers · 23/12/2024 10:07

Has the chip gone or is it blocked? When my chip stopped working, I downloaded Apple Pay on my phone and it worked as there wasn't an issue with my account.

They don't cancel the card when replacing a damaged one, so you can still use it.

visitbreakfast · 23/12/2024 10:08

This is one of these situations that doesn't have a solution. DD often has these and it's frustrating.

You have to either do without the card or use it digitally. You have said no to all options suggested.

What are you looking for?

mondaytosunday · 23/12/2024 10:08

My card doesn't work very well either but I have Apple Pay and it works fine for online shopping.
It's a normal work day so call your bank (I don't think they handle these things in branch).

CombatBarbie · 23/12/2024 10:09

Has your card expired??

biscuitsandbooks · 23/12/2024 10:09

A lot of this advice won't work if you can't verify your identity via your phone - you'll have to go the bank in person.

RedRiverShore5 · 23/12/2024 10:09

Have you rang your bank yet to be clear what is wrong

LordEmsworth · 23/12/2024 10:09

If you don have a pone so he bank can't contact ou, how can you possibly know that there hasn't been any unusual activity on your accont, and they have locked it to prevent you being defrauded?

It's a working day, the banks are open normal hours. Contact them and ask.

As others have said, if your account is OK then you can use a mobile wallet, you don't need a sim. But it sounds pretty likely that there's a block on your account t so that won't work.

If you can't phone the bank then you'll need to go in. Take some ID with you in case they ask.

Whattodonexttoday · 23/12/2024 10:10

The card is not expired. The account is secure. I was able to order something on deliveroo.

Is a driver’s license enough or will I also need to take my passport?

Let me guess. No passport?

LIZS · 23/12/2024 10:16

If you go into the branch they should be able to help and allow you to withdraw cash.

BobbyBiscuits · 23/12/2024 10:16

There was an instance where I managed to get a new card on the same day as losing the first one inside a machine. But it was a big branch that had the card making machine. I bet most of those have closed down now.

Bubblebuttress · 23/12/2024 10:18

You use deliveroo but cant afford a sim card? So much is wrong with this. Just go to a bank ffs. Card is enough to get money at a teller

HotCrossBunplease · 23/12/2024 10:18

You can call your bank using WiFi calling.

RedRiverShore5 · 23/12/2024 10:21

DH paid some money into a club account he is treasurer for at TSB and had to show identification, he showed his driving licence so best take that

YosemiteTrail · 23/12/2024 10:21

You will have to go into a bank but you are making life difficult by having no other cards, no pay pal, no Apple Pay on your phone and no sim in your phone.

WorriedRelative · 23/12/2024 10:21

Whattodonexttoday · 23/12/2024 09:59

The compartment in the phone where you place the SIM card is broken. Not able to buy new phone for a while. Thankfully still works fine on Wi-Fi.

E-sim doesn't need a slot.

huuskymam · 23/12/2024 10:22

Phone the bank, this happened to my husband last week, the bank had blocked the card due to unusual activity, had it back working in half an hour.

avaritablevampire · 23/12/2024 10:24

Your drivers license will be fine, it's worth taking just incase, but you probably won't need it as you already bank there and have the card.
Despite the SIM being broken do you still have a phone number? When my SIM compartment broke, the SIM was still functioning, I just couldn't change providers as I couldn't swap SIMs.
You could try loading your card onto your phone. Do you do online banking and have the app for your bank? In which case you can order a new card through that. My card still worked whilst I waited for a new card online, I just couldn't use it in a shop / cash machine. (My chip got a bit wet when it was pouring with rain and I used it to pay for parking, it stopped working almost immediately, turns out the chips don't like getting wet....not a great design if using on a parking meter in the rain!)

E-sim doesn't need a slot.

Some phone accounts that piggy back main providers don't have e sims, Tesco doesn't, some phones don't have e sims, especially older ones which OPs probably is if it's broken.

That is one convenience I do have!

This is a painful read. So many suggestions and you've ignored most of them. Phone the bank. It's a normal day they willl tell you what your options are.

This. Lots of good advice on this thread. But OP is playing life on difficult mode - no need to be this chaotic in this day and age when there are so many conveniences available (some of which she's managing to use like deliveroo). You make yourself very vulnerable by not sorting out the basics.

Exactly. You need to start by phoning the bank. Faffing about with anything else such as Apple pay, PayPal etc, is entirely pointless until you know whether the bank has frozen your card or not.
