Debit card won’t work in machine or chip and pin and won’t tap

I have no other cards, it is also what I use to travel by tapping. No cash money at home.

Are banks open today? What can I do next?

I don’t want this card cancelled whilst they send out a new one, it still needs to work for my online orders while this is being sorted out.

What’s the easiest fastest way to get this sorted?

Quite stressed with other things going on and not feeling very well today, so not thinking as clearly as usual. It is a long walk to nearest bank, but it’s doable. Please advise me.

Sounds like you have a plan.

When this happened to me earlier in the year, the bank didn't cancel my existing card (as it hadn't been compromised and I still had it in my possession) so I could still use it for online shopping until the new one arrived.

My HSBC card randomly stopped working when I was in London for the weekend. Absolute ballache. Had to get a new one.

Mine is damaged into oblivion at least once a year because I forget it in a pocket and it goes through the washing machine. Online banking means I can order a replacement as often as I need to.

I think that OP does have online banking, her problem was that she didn't have any other way of getting money, no good being able to order a replacement if you haven't got another bank card to use in the interim as OP hadn't so had to actually go to the bank to get a temporary card at the cost of £12.

@Whattodonexttoday could you not have withdrawn some cash from the bank while you were there ordering a new card, then wait for the new card to arrive?

I suppose if you can’t go without a debit card for a day or use Apple Pay then a trip to the bank is needed.

Probably had it not been Christmas and the bank holidays and post taking ages then OP could have managed. It's wise to have a back up plan anyway of second bank account, credit card or both.
