AIBU - bin lorry nightmare

Usually our bins are collected in the afternoon, today they turned up at 7am to collect! We hadn't put them out yet and it was too late to catch them.
Husband is beside himself, had not stopped going in about it. He is considering calling council to complain. It is now being referred to as the great bin disaster of xmas 2024.

I think I may have to ltb - AIBU?

Your husband would hate it here, the binmen change our collection days to suit themselves and don't bother to tell either the householders or the council. They also decided to change collections to fortnightly, despite the fact they should be weekly – and the council weren't aware.

Christmas Eve trip to the local tip for your husband should help reset him after today's soothing glasses of Bailey's

HelloCanYouHearMe · 23/12/2024 10:54

Our council also states that bins need to be kerbside by 7am.

Although the fact that our bin men aren't on strike this year is a Christmas miracle in itself

Thank you for all the comments, he wishes me to say this is the first time EVER he has not put them out them night before. He has recovered his good humour. We won't bother the Council as it is entirely our ( his) fault.
But I forsee that he will be going on about this every Christmas forever more

Call it bin-gate! 🤣

Off on a tangent here...

We have to wheel our bins to the entrance of our cul de sac in order for them to be collected - they won't empty them otherwise. Our neighbour, however, through many years of complaints and dogged refusal to do this, has her bin (and only hers) collected from outside her house. One of the bin guys has to walk down, collect the bin and empty it. If they forget to return it outside her house, it unleashes a further torrent of complaints.

That said, we actually get on quite well with her 😌

We have a vicious neighbour who is like this. She refuses to take it just to the end of her drive, and if they don't notice, she hollers at them from her doorway to come and fetch it. And put it back!! If they refuse or ignore her, she must complain, as they always come back later in the week and just do hers.

Just call and say they didn't take it but it was at the kerbside. They can't prove it. Just hope they come back!

Last time my council only emptied half the bin and it wasn't stuck but they refused to come back for the first time ever. They were telling me to take it to the tip myself 😮 I put in a complaint and they ignored it 😂

No way would I do that and risk getting people in trouble. Even if they believed you and came back, ultimately that’s tax payer’s money which is being wasted because someone didn’t get their bin out in time!

Everyone keeps suggesting the tip but this isn't so easy! We missed our bin once. Took a couple of bin bags to the tip and the man almost refused us! Said they can't take bags of mixed rubbish like that it all needs to be sorted and put in the right bit! Even though it's not recycling Confused

I am very jealous of your husband when missing a bun collection is his biggest concern in life! He’s really done well for himself.

To be fair, I'd be heartbroken too if I got to the bakery, all excited, and they'd closed early Grin

Does she not understand the concept of a kerbside collection? Imagine how much longer it would take if the bin men had to collect aand then return everybody's bins - then people would still complain that they put it back in the wrong place or something.

It's very selfish expecting the bin men to give you special treatment, unless of course you're disabled or otherwise struggle to do it yourself and have registered this need with the council.

Bins should be out by 7am as that is when collections can start. He needs to get a grip. It is a pain, one of our collections started coming really early after being much later. We sucked up a missed collection. Obviously not ideal before Christmas, but you would not BU to ltb.

This.

That's mad. If it's all non-recyclable, the landfill skip IS the single right place for the lot.

NewNameNoelle · 23/12/2024 15:51

6.30am for us. They came at 6.28am once and I missed them. I complained and they came the next day to collect.

Your poor DH, this would ruin my day too, as will the subsequent tip run. Hate going to the tip.

MauveGoose · 23/12/2024 16:13

What a privilege, for this to be his greatest concern 😅
