AIBU - bin lorry nightmare

Fedupwithteenagers24 · 23/12/2024 08:21

Usually our bins are collected in the afternoon, today they turned up at 7am to collect! We hadn't put them out yet and it was too late to catch them.
Husband is beside himself, had not stopped going in about it. He is considering calling council to complain. It is now being referred to as the great bin disaster of xmas 2024.

I think I may have to ltb - AIBU?

Our council says that bins should be out by 7am and I have occasionally heard them being lifted before that so we always have them out the night before. This week and next, Monday and Wednesday bins are being emptied on Monday, and Tuesday and Thursday bins are being emptied on Tuesday so I expect that the normal time won't apply.

Bumcake · 23/12/2024 08:36

Why does he care so much?

If he can’t live with it, can he bag it up and drive to the tip?

Drivingmisspotty · 23/12/2024 08:37

You have prompted me to check our council website and realised ours is on a different day this week. At least some good has come of your terrible tragedy.

CombatBarbie · 23/12/2024 08:37

All our bins usually get emptied at 3pm, we are the last village. Except the glass one (which is proper full size bin) 6.30am!!! The noisiest one.....

TianasBayou · 23/12/2024 08:38

At least you had a collection. Our usual day is Wednesday. No collection scheduled this week or next week as both are bank holidays. So that's the usual week's worth of rubbish, all the Xmas , Twixmas and NYE rubbish and recycling, and food waste. No wheelie bins here either just plastic sacks.

DH has tip runs booked!

K0OLA1D · 23/12/2024 08:38

Well YABU as they obviously will have more runs on the lead up to Christmas. Our bins are always out the night before without fail.

But YANBU about your husband. Shit as it is. It's your fault not the councils

BuzzieLittleBee · 23/12/2024 08:38

Ours is normally 7am on a Monday, but not a peep from them yet, so I'm guessing they'll be with us later seeing as they've been to yours early.

Our (waste) bin is only collected every 3 weeks, and ours is next week whilst we're on holiday. So it will be 6 weeks between collections! Luckily about 90% of our waste goes in recycling now - there's room for about 8-10 weeks of actual waste in our wheelie bin.

He is particularly peeved as they had turned off the reversing noise - presumably as so early- I think I will suggest early drink to calm him.

Omg, send that lorry rounnd to the other MNetter who didn't like the shouty lorry!

SJM1988 · 23/12/2024 08:40

Always put the bins out the night before - this time of year the schedules are all over the place.
We usually get a 7am collection but this time of year it can be afternoon collection if they are covering two routes.

flumposie · 23/12/2024 08:42

Bins always out the night before. Ours pick up around 7am.

Sharptonguedwoman · 23/12/2024 08:45

There's a messaging service you can subscribe to for phones and smart watches, telling you the day before to put your bin out. My binmen come with the lark so bins are always out the day before.
OP, can I suggest you send DH to the tip, several times today, for a bit of peace?

We get a card from the council telling us about xmas adjustments.

Our bin was collected on Saturday morning instead of Monday afternoon. Last year we missed it and I had to empty the black bin, dog poo bags and everything and go to the tip. Grim times.

MixedCouple2 · 23/12/2024 08:47

Your council rep is your bins must be out it 7am.
Now you have you sick it up and take them to recycling centre yourselves.

Call the council for what???? 🤬

LogicalImpossibility · 23/12/2024 08:47

Our council has started fining people for ‘fly tipping’ if anything is left outside their homes. So no more neighbourhood swopping of furniture or toys, by putting them out on the pavement.

By the letter of the law this includes bins, apparently we’re meant to all get up at 6.00 to put them out, and they shouldn’t be done the night before. I can’t see this working…

Topseyt123 · 23/12/2024 08:48

Always put them out the night before as that's what our local council advise. I can't say that we have never almost forgotten and had any close calls though and I do have to be pretty vigilant with it around Christmas and New Year.

Until recently ours were coming around midday but they do start work at something like 7am. So best to be ready. About a couple of months ago they suddenly started coming at 7.30am! Which caught some people out.

Your collection wasn't missed, it hadn't been put out. So you might not be able to report a missed bin, and even if they do accept that they still quite probably won't be able to return before Christmas now.

Maybe your DH will need to try and get a slot at the dump (you have to book them at ours, and good luck with that at this time of year) and drive the bin there. 🤣

crockofshite · 23/12/2024 08:48

this doesn't help you now, but I think our council guidelines say bins must be out by 7am as the truck could come any time after that. I always put mine out the night before

buttonousmaximous · 23/12/2024 08:48

Tip run?

RoseDog · 23/12/2024 08:49

Ours is due to be emptied on Boxing Day and I am contemplating putting it out tonight so I don't forget on Christmas Day, the bin rules are so strict now, I just hope the woman with her clipboard and "refuse to empty" stickers isn't out on Boxing Day!

Redkatagain · 23/12/2024 08:50

Local councillor here. Report the missed collection online.

You won't be alone

Roselilly36 · 23/12/2024 08:51

Oh no! I wouldn’t be happy either. Bins out the night before here, they will often come at 7am to collect. We have fortnightly collection in my area, so I wouldn’t want to miss one.

Daleksatemyshed · 23/12/2024 08:51

Our council says all bins out by 7am every week. Your DH will have lots of time over Christmas to repent and see the error if his ways, he'll be a new man by NY

xILikeJamx · 23/12/2024 08:53

As with most others, our council has "bins to be out by 7am" on the websites and occasional leaflets that we get.

I hate when people put their bins out the night before though - the amount that get blown over and you end up with their shit flying round the street is infuriating!

I also hate those bin strap things that hold the lids closed - working from home and they're all blowing about in the wind banging off the sides of the bins all day making a bloody racket! Should be banned

Will it be collected on Boxing Day? We are a Thursday collection normally but this week it’s Friday.

Ours is 6!

RoseDog · 23/12/2024 08:54

@Sirzy yes, we are usually a Wednesday but they are only working one day behind this year!
