AIBU - bin lorry nightmare

Fedupwithteenagers24 · 23/12/2024 08:21

Usually our bins are collected in the afternoon, today they turned up at 7am to collect! We hadn't put them out yet and it was too late to catch them.
Husband is beside himself, had not stopped going in about it. He is considering calling council to complain. It is now being referred to as the great bin disaster of xmas 2024.

I think I may have to ltb - AIBU?

We missed ours this week. It was changed to a different day & I forgot. I woke up to hear the lorry passing...

No I totally agree. If you put them out before 7am you get fined, but the first week they changed the schedule they were here at 6:10am. But because three of us had seen, and had ours collected, the council refused to come back to the others as they had evidence that they had been on time 🤷🏼‍♀️. Now they’re coming at about 6:30am so people are putting them out the night before, so I imagine clipboard lady will be around soon, fining everyone.

Typical councils, eh?

"We work for you!"

My poor son heard the bin lorry, so quickly jumped out of bed and chucked on shorts. Couldn’t find the door key, so climbed out of the window in bare feet. It’s only a 6 foot front garden so the bin operators saw him. Son managed to get the bin to the lorry in time, the bin man suggested he put the bin out the night before. No shit Sherlock, I’m in the habit of climbing out of windows half naked.

mrlistersgelfbride · 23/12/2024 09:27

I missed my bin collection today for the same reason. Kicking myself.
Just let it go, and take it out the night before in future.

FizzyBisto · 23/12/2024 09:29

It's not always as easy as 'just taking it down the tip', though.

Apart from the fact that many places have restricted opening hours and/or you have to make an appointment - and if you only have a van as your sole household vehicle, they may turn you away...

I enjoy a good, satisfying tip run as much as anybody, but I really don't want stinking, sloppy, potentially leaky kitchen and other waste in my car - the sort for which using a bin is so important. No problem at all for masses of flattened cardboard boxes, old broken furniture etc.

Your son is a hero!

jolies1 · 23/12/2024 09:29

Take him for a nice day out to the tip?

Jifmicroliquid · 23/12/2024 09:30

Everyone here puts them out the night before.

Bin collection days and times can change over Xmas so I’d have been prepared for them coming earlier than normal.

I feel your pain. My dh would have to be sedated if that happened. He also loves going to the tip. He's taking some cardboard today. His little face is so excited. It's such a special time of year!

🤣🤣🤣

Your son is a hero!

True. Not all heroes wear capes... or, indeed, very many clothes at all!!

Your son is a hero!

Thank you, I think so.

LasagneLasagne · 23/12/2024 09:33

Off on a tangent here...

We have to wheel our bins to the entrance of our cul de sac in order for them to be collected - they won't empty them otherwise. Our neighbour, however, through many years of complaints and dogged refusal to do this, has her bin (and only hers) collected from outside her house. One of the bin guys has to walk down, collect the bin and empty it. If they forget to return it outside her house, it unleashes a further torrent of complaints.

That said, we actually get on quite well with her 😌

brunettemic · 23/12/2024 09:35

So the bins were collected on the day they’re meant to be collected and somehow this is the councils fault? Erm 🤔

Latenightreader · 23/12/2024 09:38

Sinkintotheswamp · 23/12/2024 08:28

They won't come back as it's your fault I'm afraid.

I "missed" a collection once and dashed it out to the binmen who were tipping their wheelie bins into the lorry, I was very apologetic. The supervisor bit my head off and refused to take mine and made me cry. Asshole.

I’ve done the run of shame with a jumper over pyjamas a few times and our binmen are always lovely about it - sorry you’ve had meanies! There was one memorable occasion when I dashed out having just washed my hair so it was in a huge damp bushy tangle half over my face and one of the binmen looked hard at me and said “[name]?” His sister was in my class about 35 years ago, although we were never friends. Goodness knows how he recognised me after all that time, especially looking like that! Just a tad mortifying on a Wednesday morning…

ThatsNotMyTeen · 23/12/2024 09:39

Ours have to be out by 7 am and at this time of year collections change so it’s on you. However YANBU to LTB for him going on about it

andHelenknowsimmiserablenow · 23/12/2024 09:40

Ours all have to go out the night before as they can collect as early as 6am.
They are very reliable but sling the bins back right in front of the drive, so if i am returning from work I have to leave the car in the middle of the road (no parking on street) run and get the bin out of the way, so I can park on the drive. They don't do that to everyone though, so I think they just hate me 😁

YouveGotAFastCar · 23/12/2024 09:41

LadyDanburysHat · 23/12/2024 08:23

Bins should be out by 7am as that is when collections can start. He needs to get a grip. It is a pain, one of our collections started coming really early after being much later. We sucked up a missed collection. Obviously not ideal before Christmas, but you would not BU to ltb.

This must vary - ours are always collected and the bins back by 6am.

BettyBardMacDonald · 23/12/2024 09:43

"Run of shame" 🤣🤣🤣

Been there in my old pink dressing gown...

tediber · 23/12/2024 09:44

Just call and say they didn't take it but it was at the kerbside. They can't prove it. Just hope they come back!

Last time my council only emptied half the bin and it wasn't stuck but they refused to come back for the first time ever. They were telling me to take it to the tip myself 😮 I put in a complaint and they ignored it 😂

Actually some councils have cameras on their bin lorry’s ours certainly do which is why they cannot take extra general rubbish because if someone reports it they check the cameras and get in trouble.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 23/12/2024 09:47

I always put them out the night before.

Nothatgingerpirate · 23/12/2024 09:52

It's good to put bins out the previous night and keep up with this stuff, it's not gonna get better soon.
Sorry.

Kindling1970 · 23/12/2024 10:03

I am very jealous of your husband when missing a bun collection is his biggest concern in life! He’s really done well for himself.

tediber · 23/12/2024 10:06

@UndermyShoeJoe No way that's crazy but supposed they may be able to prove it then 😂
