Wtf? It's not that serious because no-one was killed? And he said this more than once in the interview.

Incroyable. Putain !

He's apologised, according to Le Monde, but still.

You are being hilarious. In England too fuck is used everywhere, but the difference between fuck me and fuck you is quite important. Especially when someone says fuck her in a post on a woman being fucked against her knowledge. I don’t need any luck to convince the entire French population, I’m not even trying. It’s blatant though, and if you don’t see it then yabvu.

but "putain" does not mean "fuck her" or "fuck you" at all?

You are not making any sense at all. I don't think you understand the word "putain".

Just to go one step further with the Malteser analogy.
What would you say if somebody said they hate all Maltesers because they all contain poison? And what would a non-poisonous Malteser say?

It fails as an analogy here because nobody is saying that.
Can you answer the question? Would you eat any of them, knowing one box was poisoned but not knowing which one?

Tarraleah · 23/12/2024 21:07

Interestingly, what the mayor actually said, according to the media is

"Ça aurait pu être plus grave, il n’y a pas eu d’enfants impliqués, aucune femme n’est morte".
meaning it could have been much worst, at least there's no children involved and no woman died.

He obviously apologises for saying stupid things in front of journalists who were bombarding him with questions and he was completely out of his depth.

He wasn't exactly condoning rape either.

I would get the know the maltesers a bit more before eating them, does that help?

StrawberryDream24 · 23/12/2024 21:13

Aside from the obvious fact that the ongoing drugging and raping of a woman by her husband and whoever responded to his adverts is not "not serious" because no-one died ....

A. He could have killed her accidentally when sedating her.

B. She was suffering a lot of issues due to the sedation; it's just "lucky" they didn't kill her/disable her etc.

C. Pelicot has been caught for the attempted sedation and rape of a very young woman. He's admitted it. He couldn't not, due to.dna. Again he could have killed that young woman.

But most importantly of all, a young woman was raped and killed/died in circumstances identical to the case he's been identified as the perpetrator of. They helpfully destroyed or lost forensic evidence for the rape and murder case but it looks like he may still be prosecuted. So he has - in all likelihood killed someone, someone has died. And he could have killed the other young woman. And he could have killed his wife.

Was the mayor made to resign?

I believe the rapist and murderer's defence attorney also made comments ridiculing the case; she needs prosecuted, she needs to lose her license (or whatever the correct term is in France).

It was implied in the 4th post

No I wouldn't eat one.

Yes.

But what about my 2 questions.

StrawberryDream24 · 23/12/2024 21:15

and no woman died

A young woman has died - extremely likely to be murdered by Pelicot. He's prime suspect.

I don't know how much the mayor knew about that at the time.

Sadly, Maltesers are often very good at hiding their true selves.

Just to go one step further with the Malteser analogy.
What would you say if somebody said they hate all Maltesers because they all contain poison? And what would a non-poisonous Malteser say?

A non-poisonous Malteasers would say, "fair enough. If at least 1/100 of us are deadly poison to children, and somewhere between 13 and 31 percent of us would cause lifelong harm to women who ate them, and it was impossible to tell the difference, yes, feel free to avoid us". Good Malteasers wouldn't be utter dicks about it.

A lot of apologists rely on faulty assumptions that this is rare. It isn't rare. Men who would harm women if they could get away with it are frighteningly common. The trick is to have a society where they can't get away with it, socially or legally. We don't live there

Ted Bundy had a partner.

Ian Huntley had a partner.

Wayne Cousins had a wife/partner.

I could go on for pages.

You credit yourself with too much ability.

I agree, we use 'putain' in French as we do 'fuck' in English, it's completely dissociated with its original meaning (also no-one would use it to talk about prostitutes anymore either, they'd use the abbreviation 'pute' which is a pretty vulgar swearword).

Now try and answer the question I asked.

I believe that the Mayor of Mazan has now had to go into hiding because has had so many credible death threats. Including threats of gangs planning to go to his house and kill him.

It seems that there are many many men that strongly disapprove of sexual violence and the excusing if it.

So much so that they believe that violence is the best solution.

I think my head might explode with trying to square this circle!

Persimmons123 · 23/12/2024 21:51

I’ll spell it one more time and then it’s up to you. Putain means whore. By extension it is used to mean fuck. So fuck the whore. It absolutely does not mean fuck your wife consensually. You don’t have to say it all to mean it. You can keep using it as fuck, the whole of France can keep using it as fuck, maybe in ten years it will be used to mean something else than fuck, but it will always come from whore and it will never mean flower, or pot, because the origin of the word is clear. Whether you like it or not. Please go ahead and keep using putain in the common sense of fuck. Your use of the language is misogynist and you can keep justifying it as much as you want.

Maria1982 · 23/12/2024 22:01

niadainud · 22/12/2024 22:56

It didn't happen in Mazan because there is an unusually high proportion of potential rapists there. It happened because Mazan has the same proportion of would-be rapists as everywhere else.

Thinking of it like this is terrifying, and I suspect many of us (myself included) don’t think of it like that precisely because it is so terrifying (some sort of protective denial if you see what I mean). But yes.

And "seminal" relates to semen, but I don't think that's what people have in mind when they're talking about something influencing later developments.

You’re making an illogical jump here because ´putain’ is used as an expletive in French in a similar way to how ´fuck’ is used in English. But that doesn’t mean that the meaning of ´putain’ in French is linked to the meaning of ´fuck’ in English.
In French ´Chou’ is a term of endearment. In English ´pet’ is a term of endearment. That doesn’t mean French people are linking cabbages and pets every time they call their baby ´chouchou’.
You can absolutely argue that it’s misogynistic to have a word for prostitute used as an expletive. But you can’t link it to the English use of ´fuck’ for similar linguistic functions and say by extension ´putain’ means ´fuck the prostitute’ and not just ´prostitute’.

This, to my mind, is the scariest thing about it; the statistics that can be extrapolated.

Dominique Pelicot is obviously a monster and presumably a psychopath, but he is to some extent an anomaly. The scores of rapists who filed through the door are clearly not anomalous; we know that as there were so many of them.
