Wtf? It's not that serious because no-one was killed? And he said this more than once in the interview.

Incroyable. Putain !

He's apologised, according to Le Monde, but still.

I'm policing womens language? What does that even mean?

You really need to educate yourself, you can start by reading the feminist board on MN. I won’t be engaging with you further.

He also said she didn't suffer as much as she was unconscious when she was raped. Words fail me.

Seriously? Dear God 🤯

Ok. I'll leave you all to your all men are scum thread.
Enjoy

Iaminthefly · 22/12/2024 19:23

@Didshejustsaythatoutloud and we'll leave you to your delusion that's there's tons and tons of really good men out there.

Plastictrees · 22/12/2024 19:23

niadainud · 22/12/2024 19:11

Thanks. Unfortunately this wasn't when I was younger. It was in my late 40s and very recent.

It's sort of easy to mentally pigeon-hole - and almost disregard - the "obvious" criminals who fit our preconceptions; they're not nice people, unlike our fathers/brothers/sons/partners. In our minds they're barely the same species. But there are many, many men out there presenting as respectable, decent members of society; well educated with good jobs and so on, maybe with their own family, who are nevertheless behaving very poorly when it comes to things like consent, openness, faithfulness, sexism, etc. Maybe not doing anything as horrific as Dominique Pelicot did, but still being slightly shit human beings with a convincing veneer of "not being like that".

And I'm sure we don't know the half of it. Every man is someone's son, after all.

Yes absolutely, and these encounters can very much happen at any age. The only reason I experience less of them now is because I’m no longer on the dating scene, but of course I notice problematic behaviour by men regularly. I agree that a lot of men who perpetuate horrendous crimes are hiding in plain sight. It is very disconcerting.

NamelessNancy · 22/12/2024 19:24

Maybe start a separate men appreciation thread? I'm sure they'd be very grateful. I agree with those who've said a thread about a man minimising the rape of a woman by 50 other men is not the place to be NAMALTing.

Well if he isn't he's probably friends with one.
I always wondered about women living in the area where Gisele Pelicot lived. How could you trust your husband, your son if there are so many unknown perpetrators among them.
If I was a single women I would probably move elsewhere.

But Mazan could be any town. Anywhere, in any country.

There are. Obviously not the same ones in your circle.

You are clearly the one who needs perspective as you seem unable to recognise the prevalence of violence against women and girls perpetrated by men, because you have a son. Rape, sexual abuse and domestic violence are ubiquitous and that doesn’t change because you put your fingers in your ears and shout ‘not all men!!!!’ We need to be recognising and preventing this behaviour, not wasting time defending men who are not in the position of needing defense. Men are inherently privileged and misuse their power, hence the widespread violence perpetrated by them.

It is ignorant and in exceptionally poor taste to come on a thread such as this one and repeatedly bleat on about NAMALT, as if what Gisele has experienced is a one off rarity. Yes what her husband and those ‘men’ did was absolutely vile, but sadly so many women will have experienced sexual abuse/ domestic violence / trauma by men. We do not need to hear that not ALL men are abusers because we obviously know this. But too MANY are.

I have a wonderful husband and a wonderful son. I am even more passionate about this topic because I have a son. NAMALT has no place here.

I think not knowing the rapists among us makes people probably feel safer.

GelatoPistacchio · 22/12/2024 19:47

Decent blokes don't feel the need to centre themselves in this story with a 'not all men' line and don't want or ask for women to defend them with this line either.

They are secure enough not to be offended and understand this is a massive problem within their sex.

MrsTerryPratchett · 22/12/2024 19:57

You only need to look at what happens when men are allowed to do anything. War for example. NAMALT but a disturbingly high number of them are.

MrsTerryPratchett · 22/12/2024 19:58

NAMALT

@Didshejustsaythatoutloud There are very few men in my circle nowadays. Mainly because the vast majority of men I've met in my life have been disappointing human beings

I

Sarkyandcynical · 22/12/2024 20:52

As I read elsewhere on the internet today (to paraphrase @ ginamartin)

“Not all men.
But at least 72 men in a 50km radius who assaulted Gisele Pelicot.
Plus the few who knew about it, came to view her unconscious and chose not to commit assault, but also did nothing to report it or stop it.
Plus the thousands who viewed the requests he posted on line and did nothing to stop it.
And the tens of thousands who watched the abuse online.
Not all men, but too fucking many”

Blueskieslookingatme · 22/12/2024 20:56

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 22/12/2024 14:59

Please don't tar all men as scummy.
Lately it seems as if all men are monsters, the evidence is certainly there for a lot of them but not all. There are some fantastic ones out there (and in my life)

That's not the point FF's sake!!!

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 22/12/2024 20:56

@MrsTerryPratchett I like your NAMALT chart though maybe it should also have a special mention for arseholes. Like the Mayor of Mazan.

There are so many categories it misses. Like 'men who would if they could get away with it' 'men who say nothing about 9 yos marrying or Afghani women not being able to laugh or speak' and others.

It's so depressing.

It didn't happen in Mazan because there is an unusually high proportion of potential rapists there. It happened because Mazan has the same proportion of would-be rapists as everywhere else.

No doubt many of the wives and mothers of the men who raped Gisele Pelicot also thought that their Nigel wasn't like that either.
