Bit annoying considering they also share the same surname!

I know no one owns a name, but it's pretty annoying.

OK and? They have the same name so?

Enough to start a MN thread. I would find it very odd if a family member did this. It wouldn't be the end of the world but yes I'd be annoyed.

The kids are barely related though, I’ve never met my parents’ cousins, let alone their children. There’s also an age gap. I can’t see how this will be a problem for anyone.

I was suggesting that the OP reframe things, if this is all she has to moan about then count her blessings, crack on and have a nice Christmas!

Wonderingpurple · 20/12/2024 21:09

And I have two cousins with the same name (their parents are siblings). Never questioned it, just assumed both parents thought it was a good name

LynetteScavo · 20/12/2024 21:10

Hmm..I would be annoyed if they were likely to be at the same school, but not bothered if they were at the other end of the country.

ThisIcyHare · 20/12/2024 21:11

I take it you aren’t Irish 😂 everyone in my husbands family is called John, Thomas, Patrick, Margaret or Bridget, absolutely everyone!

They may well have their reasons that wre nothing to do with your child. Is it the name of a family member or friend of either of theirs?
How often do you spend time together?
Can't say I'd manage to care much if it was me. If you ever look into a bit of family history then you'll see that the same name in families was very common. Especially fathers and first born sons.

ThisCosyAquaHiker · 20/12/2024 21:13

I think the only reasonable thing to do, at this point, is sue for infringement of intellectual property.

DidyouNO · 20/12/2024 21:14

'There are infinite names available, I think that's what's so annoying.'
But there was infinite names available when you chose that name for your child but they can't do exactly what you did? Make it make sense😂😂

dollybird · 20/12/2024 21:15

We purposely didn't choose two names we liked (DH granddad's names) as his half sister and cousin had already used them. Then his cousin called his DS the same name as ours. Wasn't that bothered as different surnames, but was a bit 🙄 when DH's aunt declared with much glee 'he (cousin) thought of it himself!', but they always did treat him like a small child.

TENSsion · 20/12/2024 21:15

Take it as a compliment.

Scutterbug · 20/12/2024 21:15

I’ve got two nephews with the same first and second names. It’s a bit strange but not ever really been a big deal.

CitizenZ · 20/12/2024 21:16

Call the Police... Surely they will fix this magnificent problem.

There are 8 people in my family with the same name. 8. Edited to clarify I only share my surname with 4 of them 😂

That's weird

No it isn’t. Family names are pretty common. My father, brother, one of my uncles and a cousin all have the same name. Not weird at all.

Cattenberg · 20/12/2024 21:20

At least they’re not close relatives. I do find it strange when multiple family members have the same first name - the main purpose of a name is to identify the person and distinguish them from others.

GinToBegin · 20/12/2024 21:20

ARichtGoodDram · 20/12/2024 19:44

Is it a family name?

It’s really not long since it was incredibly common for cousins to have the same family names.

Agree with this. My (really quite small) family was awash with ‘Robert’s, including a father and son, and the son’s cousin, and at least one more. There was also Bob the dog, and (this is my favourite) my cousin Catherine, who was known as Bobby all her life, because when she was born, her toddler older brother pronounced baby as Bobby, and it stuck. I am not a Robert, but if I go to Starbucks and they want my name for the order, I always go with Bob.

That said, I suspect it’s much less usual these days.

shoulde · 20/12/2024 19:54

No one has our surname. It's not at all common

My maiden name is very usual. So much so when you used to have phone books all the entries were our family or extended family.

And most of the males were called one of two names so there are multiple people across the generations with the exact same name, even down to our generation with my cousin and brother

Nobody felt precious about bringing named the same as a relative, especially a second cousin

Hwi · 20/12/2024 21:21

Sorry, showing my age, but it reminds me of the episode in SATC, where Charlotte goes ape-shit over somebody 'stealing her baby name'.

HocusFord · 20/12/2024 21:21

Non issue, honestly. That’s a very distant relationship, it’s not going to matter!

IIlolamay · 20/12/2024 21:24

My nephew has the same name as my son. To be fair, she asked me first if I minded. I said no and they became known as Big Andrew and Wee Andrew. They're still called big and wee but Wee Andrew is now bigger than Big Andrew. We both wanted them called Andrew not Andy, Drew, Sandy or any other corruption of Andrew. So it's not that unusual.

WillowTree33 · 20/12/2024 21:26

tbh seems like a non-issue to me, my sister and one of our first cousins share a name (first and last name) but then they are aged 8 years apart and we grew up in different countries, might have been more of a ‘thing’ if they lived round the corner. But it never struck me as especially weird till now 😂 maybe it is!

Ihavenoclu · 20/12/2024 21:27

I named my son the same name as one of my cousins named hers. We live in different countries though and never meet unless there is a funeral.

Someone ‘stole’ my friends baby name years ago, but she still called her baby the name anyway as she’d wanted it forever! Whoooo cares

ttcat37 · 20/12/2024 21:28

It’s ridiculous. There’s a gazillion names to choose from. How hard is it to pick something that a family member doesn’t already have? I think I’d have to say “oh that’s so sweet you named him after DS!”

socks1107 · 20/12/2024 21:30

One of mine is named the same as my cousin. No drama tbh.

Maybluebell · 20/12/2024 21:31

Personally yes I find it weird they chose the same name, there are so many names out there. Having the same surname makes it more annoying.
That being said, they aren't going to change his name so I'd just try to accept it and not stress myself about something out of my control
