Bit annoying considering they also share the same surname!

I know no one owns a name, but it's pretty annoying.

My cousin named his ds the same as mine, I thought it was quite nice!

YellowAsteroid · 20/12/2024 22:47

Yes. YABU

Don't be silly.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 20/12/2024 23:54

It's a bit weird of them but everyone knows you got there first.
Theo child will be Noah jones the 2nd

charabang · 21/12/2024 00:26

My son and his first cousin have the same name. They are two years apart. Therefore Nana has two grandkids with the same name. Not an issue for the family especially as one cousin is in England and the other in Ireland.

Why is it annoying?

wigsonthegreenandhatsforthelifting · 21/12/2024 00:34

My cousin named two of her children the same names as two of my siblings.

The surname was different and it always had to be used to avoid confusion.

MissSookieStackhouse · 21/12/2024 00:37

YABU - many families have several people with the same name. Total non issue for cousins.

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 21/12/2024 00:39

I'm kind of reminded of 'My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw Ferris pass out at 31 Flavours last night! I guess it's pretty serious.'

Anyway YABU - they won't see each other much I guess, and when they do it'll be cute for them to have a name buddy.

SnowFrogJelly · 21/12/2024 01:12

Give your head a wobble

SALaw · 21/12/2024 01:50

My mum and her siblings have multiple cousins with the same names, and they all lived in the same small town. No one cares, and they all grow up to have their own circle etc so it doesn't have any impact on them at all.

BorrowersAreVermin · 21/12/2024 01:59

DSis and a cousin are a few months apart in age. I know DM was pretty annoyed her sister chose a name for our cousin she was considering for DSis. Both DM and my aunty are gone now, would have been interesting to ask them.

DC has a very unique name for where we live. Moreso the spelling. So unique I've only heard of one other child in the area who has a tenuous connection to DP. I think it's a beautiful name so fair play.

RubyOrca · 21/12/2024 02:25

YABU - given the non response to the highly repeated question on how often these two kids are going to be interacting, and whether they’ll be in the same small school etc I’m guessing you have little to nothing to do with this family. Also - with no answer as to the uniqueness of the name combo I’m guessing more Jack Smith than Casamir Thistlebottom.

Unless you ran your name choice past them for approval, you can’t expect them to run their name choices past you. Your kid being born first really doesn’t veto those names for other people - especially distant family.

I get why it’s annoying. I share a name with another person in my community and it causes administrative hassles at times (it would be easier if they were close family, but they aren’t). But that’s just life.

Ladyof2025 · 21/12/2024 02:26

So what? My sis called her son the same base as her brother. 50 years on, it still hasn't caused a problem.

Riapia · 21/12/2024 03:06

In my DM’s family the first daughter is always given a certain first name.
I have the same first name as an aunt and two cousins. We all live in the same village. Amusing at family gatherings.

Pallisers · 21/12/2024 03:18

oh for goodness sake so many of my cousins and second cousins have the same name. Are you seriously annoyed at this?

worriedhidinginplainsight · 21/12/2024 05:18

My brother and two of my cousins (on the same side of the family) all have the same name! It's not a problem at all. They are all named after my grandfather who everyone adored. I think it's really nice. The boys don't mind sharing the name.... I think they are quite proud of it 😄

worriedhidinginplainsight · 21/12/2024 05:22

Oh, and I absolutely love one of my female cousins names and if I was to have a daughter I would definitely want to use it. I would let her and my family know first, but I think they would like to have her name passed on (unfortunately I don't have children and won't be having any, but hypothetically it would be a good thing, not a source of anger!)

Speckyfourfries · 21/12/2024 06:54

Whats the name?

arcticpandas · 21/12/2024 07:20

DidyouNO · 20/12/2024 21:14

'There are infinite names available, I think that's what's so annoying.'
But there was infinite names available when you chose that name for your child but they can't do exactly what you did? Make it make sense😂😂

There was infinite names NOT TAKEN by family members when OP named her child. BIG difference.

DidyouNO · 21/12/2024 07:32

arcticpandas** No, still the same thing. Why is OP allowed to choose from ALLLLLL the infinite names but the other person isn't?? 😂😂

Anecdotally I met three people not related to me with the same first name and surname it was funny we are in no way related the only time it was an issue was when we worked at the same company and our wage slips kept getting mixed up

Then when I got married my exes aunt had the same first and last name as me

I have a common first name and surname, and same thing happens in work with me. I've had to start using my middle name too to avoid confusion.

shoulde · 20/12/2024 20:29

Except they're both little Freddie in this instance

I'd let it go, @shoulde , unless the surname is unique. Yes it's unimaginative of them, but maybe they'd picked the name first. Freddie has been very popular for years.

You have every right to mind but there's not a lot you can do about it.

Cherrysoup · 21/12/2024 11:33

Hello, OP, where you at?! I echo what everyone else says, if you’re physically close, bit odd, but some names are popular. If I type Harry into the search box at school, I get a whole page. If it’s one of the top names from the annual lists, YABU.

MrsPositivity1 · 21/12/2024 13:14

I called my son the same name as my cousin's son (different surnames)

He's 12 years older than our son, he was our Page Boy and he's a fantastic young man. We felt it was a nod to how much we thought of him to call our son after him.
