Going to scream at woman at hairdressers

LunaTheCat · 19/12/2024 22:12

Sitting at hairdresser, foils in , reading my book. There is a woman next to me using the hairdresser as her office - laptop, cell glued to her ear, shouting down her phone, trying to do a deal.
WTAF - total lack consideration for others around. She is probably under pressure so part of me is trying to think kind thoughts.

OP posts:

I wonder how many deals which are rushed through before Christmas have to be unravelled pretty quickly precisely because they were rushed through!

No, you don't make work calls in public places. That includes trains, cafes, hairdressers - and dentists - (my dentist has a sign up in the waiting room that says no mobiles, though you can use them silently to doom scroll).

There is a big difference between the regular chatter, hairdryer and background noise of a hairdresser and a single person carrying out a work call loudly. I think we all know what OP means when she says the woman is too loud trying to seal a deal. It happens in restaurants, on public transport, in shops - those one or two people whose voices carry above everyone else's.

Just because you find that irritating doesn't mean you need to book a spa day or that people are expecting library conditions everywhere they go.

No I do find it irritating. I also find devices in public places irritating, young kids on phones at restaurants, shouting on the train etc. Unfortunately that’s the world and people are allowed to do these things in public places.

MerryChristmasToYou · 20/12/2024 15:23

I was in the post office one day and it was very busy in there. The one self-service till was hogged by someone doing her posting and taking a business call. She was loud and very slow.

Or we ask them politely to tone it down as you can't hear your own conversation.

Kids on phones (quietly) in restaurants doesn't impact those around them.
Shouting on the train - unless it was a threatening situation then I'm sure someone would ask them to behave.

I think it would be entirely appropriate to ask someone loudly carrying out their work calls in the hairdresser to be a bit quieter. Just because it's allowed (in law?) doesn't mean it's socially acceptable.

MaybeItsTimeForMeNow · 20/12/2024 15:29

It would annoy me too OP. Not to the extent to shout but I'd be agitated. I also look forward to having my hair cut - busy life means it happens 2-3 times a year!

MerryChristmasToYou · 20/12/2024 15:30

My dentist has had patients trying to take calls during treatment.

@LunaTheCat

Actually - I am not a lady of leisure. I am a GP who had worked 43 hours in the last 4 days.
i know the feeling of pressure.
I just think we need to be respectful that for a lot women - me included - the hairdresser is a treat and a chance self care.
TOUCHÉ OP
people are so righteous thinking they know every situation better than others... nowadays some ppl are so unaware and uncourteous of their surroundings ...
we are not interested in your convo on your phone call but are 'forced' to listen anyhow 🤷‍♀️
Hope your hair turnt out lovely ☺️

pumpkinpillow · 20/12/2024 15:37

I look forward to my hair cut because I now regard my stylist as a friend and it's nice to have a good old natter. I don't want to sit there with headphones in to block out the noise of other customers.

VegTrug · 20/12/2024 15:39

@Resilienceisimportant To be fair, I have a DD with autism and although I make sure it's on silent, she always has my phone in restaurants/cafés. This is necessary as she becomes overstimulated in places like that.

Even though for that very reason, eating out is a rare thing for us, why should we not go anywhere, ever? Just because random strangers have an issue with a child with special needs, playing games silently on her Mum's phone in order to keep her calm?!
How else do we gradually get her used to being in these types of public places?

I do what I can to get her off it & engage her in conversation now that she's older but when she was small the phone (again, no volume) was bloody mandatory if I wanted a quick cuppa at the garden centre for example.

RosesAndHellebores · 20/12/2024 15:40

The issue is the lady shouting. I might take a call at the hairdresser, but I don't shout and I don't take a confidential call. I certainly deal with emails at the hairdresser/on the train, etc. Only a day or two ago, I was called on the train before 8.30am. "Thank you for calling me, x. I'm really sorry, but I'm on a train at present. Please could you call y and let her know and I'll catch up with you when I'm back in the office on 2nd January".

This has to be one of the most smug posts I’ve seen in awhile. Yes OP, a lady of leisure such as yourself should not be subjected to working girls being seen and heard during a hairdressing pampering session. It really brings down the tone of the place.

I think you owe the OP an apology.
On the plus side you win the prize for person who has made the biggest fool of themselves on the internet today.

I agree with you OP; I think is lack of consideration for the rest of the customers; thinking her job is more important than everyone else time. You go to the hair dresser to relax and be pampered.

If you have an important deadeline then you don’t have time to go to the hairdresser

stripypanda100 · 20/12/2024 15:45

@LunaTheCat
You could also have asked the salon to flick the wifi 🛜 off for a few seconds... that would have been hilarious... if a 'deadline' has to be met... don't get your hair done ... stay at work/office/home and work...

mathanxiety · 20/12/2024 15:46

NewName24 · 19/12/2024 23:05

Don't be daft.

For a start, as a Manager, I would be VERY unimpressed if I found out someone had been making calls and using their laptop in a place where everything could be overhears, and where the people on the other end of the phone would be able to hear they weren't getting full attention.

Secondly, you do realise people who work also go and get their hair done? They have arranged their working week so that they have that 30mins or hour or two hours without hearing anything about work, and that switching off actually is a chance to switch off and relax.

I agree.

It's also the place of work of all the salon staff, and part of their work entails listening to their clients so they know what to do with their hair, chatting a bit to help create a friendly atmosphere, and focusing on their tasks. It's rude and selfish to believe the demands of your job take precedence in someone elses workplace.

WaitingforStrike · 20/12/2024 15:48

Could you imagine if the OP did her work from the hairdressers - those would be very interesting phone calls!

OP, sales manager here, last working day for many, cut us some slack - targets to hit, jobs to keep! 💕

So crack on with your work and don't make a hair appointment in working hours.

It's not difficult.

I don't find the hairdressers remotely pampering. In fact I hate it, my best friend who is a from home hairdresser did mine when younger which was great as we watched films, listened to music, drank and had a girls night but nearly every 'go to the hairdressers appointment' has been shit.

They always fuck up my hair. I have very thin/fine wavy hair and they are OBSESSED with giving me an awful bob regardless of what I ask for which takes ages to grow back out, require loads of styling just to look passable and does NOT suit me. I also once spent ages getting my hair Ombre then a hairdresser cut off all the dye saying she thought I had really long roots and had never heard of Ombre despite it being everywhere at the time (completely ruined my hair).

I cut my hair myself at home now where I know I'm not going to get the wrong thing. Always baffled by the fact people think its 'pampering', almost everyone I know has utter horror stories from hairdressers, its not relaxing.

I am baffled as to how you can type or talk on the phone while having your hair done though. With someone moving round and pulling on your head or hairdryers going etc...

Totally agree. Nobody needs that.
