A large hotel local-ish to us (around 10 miles away) is currently closed for bookings as it is being occupied by just under 400 asylum seekers.

Recently, in our village and a couple of neighbouring ones, there has been a spate of parcels being stolen from doorsteps. I’m sure you can all work out who has taken the blame for this….! Even though one of the perpetrators is known to be a local lad, born and bred in our village, some people are still blaming others..

The comments on Facebook community groups are disgusting.

Since when has it been acceptable to so readily stick the blame upon those literally fleeing their countries?

I honestly feel that as a human race, we are devolving.

It’s moronic to point out that people are living as slaves right now?

Why the UK though? Why do they always come to the UK for their 'refuge?'

They don't. Only 1% come here.

Giselleb1 · 20/12/2024 23:59

Totallymessed · 20/12/2024 23:39

I don't think that's quite fair. There was actually a strong, grass roots anti-slavery movement in the UK. There were demonstrations against slavery frequently in Britain in the late 18th and early 19th century. I honestly think you should look into it, it might leave you with a less depressing idea of the British.

Again, the reason for ending slavery was economic not moral.

Teddybear23 · 21/12/2024 00:00

I live near Manchester and near me a hotel has just cancelled all weddings and functions etc and is now housing nearly 300 MALE only migrants. So please don’t tell me that the migrants are mainly families because that’s not true. There may be a few but the majority are single young men, fact.

You don't give the slightest shit that China are currently exploiting and colonising Africa, proves you don't actually care about them at all, you just want to get on your high horse and attack "the Brits" (you mean the English, but you're dumb).

Yes, I do know how purchasing the freedom of slaves worked. I'm glad you've finally bothered to get on wikipedia. It was the quickest and smoothest way of guaranteeing freedom: prioirtising the welfare of slaves rather than quibbling about undeserved money. It also prevented the destabilization that would have occurred from suddenly impoverishing the upper class.

Evidence?

And give evidence that activist who spent their own time, money and lives promoting abolition were somehow motivated by financial gain as opposed to compassion and morals.

But this is not about genuine refugees from war torn countries FFS. This is about all the 1000s of economic migrants - always single men - coming across the channel every week to the UK. 🙄 And it IS always the UK that they come to. Why?

Will you take them into your home and look after them?

No, I thought not.

It's just lip service with people like you. Acting all 'social justice warrior,' but when push comes to shove, you would do nothing tangible to help people if someone asked you to.

Since 2018, over 90% of small boat arrivals in the UK have sought asylum, and approximately 75% of their claims have been approved.

Of the top 10 nationalities applying for asylum, half have a grant rate above 80% (Afghanistan 98%, Syria 99%, Eritrea 99%, Sudan 99% and Iran 84%).

Just 1% of the refugees who have been displaced across the world make the UK their home. They make up around 0.6% of the UK population. And, based on the number of asylum applications per capita, the UK currently ranks 20th in Europe.

Asylum and refugee resettlement in the UK - Migration Observatory

This briefing sets out key facts and figures, as well as information gaps, relating to migration to the UK, specifically refugees and asylum seekers. It looks at overall numbers, characteristics of asylum seekers, and outcomes of asylum applications.

This.

A lot of people seem to bring in immigrants into virtually any conversation about virtually any problem. In fact they usually call them "illegal immigrants".

If you come over in a small boat and throw your documents in the sea (they have been filmed doing it) then of course they are ILLEGAL immigrants!

It's more complicated than that. I'm happy to discuss further, but I'm going to bed now. You have a very dispiriting view of the ordinary British, but I honestly think the reality is much better than you think.

Following grants of asylum, many young male refugees will go on to be joined by female partners through family reunion. According to the Migration Observatory, from 2012 to 2023, 81% of adults receiving refugee family reunion visas were women.

Brits will do what brits have always done, fight for their country and not run away like cowards leaving their wife's and children to be abused and left behind.

If you were in Syria which army would you have joined? Assad the dictator or the rebels with terrorist connections? Or do you think you could establish your own army?

May be before quoting a website you should actually check their knowledge gaps. According the that web site they don't actually know very much, so ill take that with a minute pinch of salt!

"We do not know how many people the UK has ever granted asylum or another form of asylum-related protection to, because published statistics go back only as far as 1979. Moreover, these published statistics record the outcomes of initial decisions only and do not take into account appeals, which increase the number of people that are ultimately granted asylum-related permission to stay.
The government does not provide regular statistics on asylum claimants broken down by their method of entry into the UK. Therefore, we do not know what share arrived by visa-free travel, on a visa, using fake documents, or by clandestine means, such as by small boat or stowing away on a lorry.
Nor do we have clear information on how long asylum applications take. Data are provided on the share of applications receiving an initial decision within 6 months, and on the number of applications currently pending, but it is not possible using existing data to calculate how long it takes the ‘average’ asylum application to receive an initial decision or final outcome.
There is also limited information on what happens to refused asylum seekers. Some depart with the assistance or oversight of the government, for which data are available. However, others depart without notifying the authorities, or remain in the UK as irregular migrants (see the Migration Observatory briefing, Irregular migration in the UK). Data on people departing the UK have improved in the past few years, in part due to the introduction of ‘exit checks’ in 2015. However, significant data gaps remain for earlier cohorts."

You didn't know that - you literally went and googled it. You thought Britain did something good by paying a "debt" but the debt actually just went back into the economy. Since brits fought so hard for Africa why didn't the slave owners send the money to Africans instead? Aww the poor upper class - what a great idea it was to pay them £20million to stop treating people like animals. Its terrible that China is now in Africa after the British but at least they aren't dehumanising and murdering them like the brits did. I don't mean the English I mean the brits as in the British empire. You should really do your research before calling people dumb.

And now Farage has been given millions by Musk he will be able to capitalise on this feeling and exploit it. It's only going to get worse.

Farage hasn't been given any money from Musk. It's the newspapers saying this and stirring things. He might donate some money in the future but he hasn't yet.

All these racist posts that people are complaining about seeing, I can't see. These groups are mostly men, they often aren't fleeing war. How is that racist. A group of any 400 anything plonked anyway most of us wouldn't feel comfortable.
