A large hotel local-ish to us (around 10 miles away) is currently closed for bookings as it is being occupied by just under 400 asylum seekers.

Recently, in our village and a couple of neighbouring ones, there has been a spate of parcels being stolen from doorsteps. I’m sure you can all work out who has taken the blame for this….! Even though one of the perpetrators is known to be a local lad, born and bred in our village, some people are still blaming others..

The comments on Facebook community groups are disgusting.

Since when has it been acceptable to so readily stick the blame upon those literally fleeing their countries?

I honestly feel that as a human race, we are devolving.

You didn't know that - you literally went and googled it. You thought Britain did something good by paying a "debt" but the debt actually just went back into the economy. Since brits fought so hard for Africa why didn't the slave owners send the money to Africans instead? Aww the poor upper class - what a great idea it was to pay them £20million to stop treating people like animals. Its terrible that China is now in Africa after the British but at least they aren't dehumanising and murdering them like the brits did. I don't mean the English I mean the brits as in the British empire. You should really do your research before calling people dumb.

This is a very poor and inaccurate assessment. Not remotely factually correct either. In many countries it was the British that stopped slavery. You have conveniently air brushed that out.

Please educate yourself before posting.

The British Empire’s Role In Ending Slavery Worldwide - Historic UK

We hear much of the UK’s involvement in the transatlantic slave trade, but little or no mention is made of the pivotal role Britain also played in its suppression worldwide...

The vast majority are NOT refugees

they are illegal economic immigrants and it’s costing this country massively both in £ and safety

they purposely don’t bring id because they know they would be refused right to remain

tje vast majority have zero rights to be here

thousands upon thousands of young men arriving from cultures with completely different cultural and religious backgrounds and disgusting attitudes towards woman, yet no one has the right to question? Oh please, completely fed up with nonsense left wing bs that mass migration is positive in any way ( it’s not) and if that makes me far right to want to preserve British’s culture, not have it turned into an Islamic state, and for my daughters to be able to walk around safely with intimidation and fears of abuse on the streets then so be it

Snowangles · 21/12/2024 07:28

I want legal immigration, bringing people in to plug skills gaps, strict and necessary like new Zealand and Oz.

I want to take refugees, again legally, vetted and in amounts that we can treat them well, we don't rob from anywhere in our country and in numbers we can cope with in every way and doesn't cause social issues.

You actually think it’s racist to object to hundreds of young men plonked in hotels often in areas right near to a school? many of whom haven’t even come from a war torn country. Meanwhile our own homeless ignored and refused the privilege of a warm bed for the night.

Yes. Racist and vile. Shame on you.

Simple I don't, so sorry im not playing your silly what if games, that's for playgrounds. It's also not as clever, as you might think to ask made up stories to try get the upper hand in an argument you're losing 🙄

It's not a made up story for the men who were there though is it. You are calling them cowards for running away when that is the very real choice they faced. If they stayed they would be killed by one side or the other for not joining them but there was no "good side" for them to join. If you don't think people fleeing that situation are genuine refugees then I don't know who you think are?

However it’s not the fault of either of the groups of homeless. People need to start looking at who is actually to blame. It’s not our homeless or the immigrants. It always suprises me when I hear people saying things like they come over and take our jobs and our homes because I find the people that complain about the job taking generally are not interested in the jobs that the immigrants take and secondly the people living in the hotel did not get up one morning and think I have decided to live for free in a hotel in England. The questions how and why they are there? should point you more in the direction of the people that should be blamed.

But sure, those workers being beaten are far more affected by things that happened generations ago, and not the whip currently smashing in to their heads.

Again, typical of brits to deflect from their wrongdoings. Noone said what the Chinese are doing is right so im not sure what your point is in showing that video. All it proves is that brits helped destabilise the continent and they were unable to recover, meaning greedy nations have taken advantage of that and continue to extort them. Africa has not been free for hundreds of years and what's happening in this awful video is nothing compared to what the brits did and continue to do to the nation.

Your ignorance, bigotry and racism is breath taking.

  1. I'm not a 'Brit' but having escaped from an actually evil place to this wonderful country, I am a fan.

  2. You have a video, right in front of your own eyes, of a Chinese OWNER beating his African workers, they look like young boys. And you first thought is... it must be someone in Britain's fault.

You didn't even look any further into it did you? Of the atrocities currently being committed in the continent of Africa? Actual colonisation and slavery, happening right now.

But you are so blinded by hate that you don't actually care about those beaten boys or the people suffering right now, those black people from the past are only of use to you if you can use them as a stick to beat other unrelated british people with.

You genuinely said 'This doesn't matter because what I imagine in the past is so much worse'.

Exactly.
The immigrants are not allowed to work and are bored and frustrated waiting years to be processed. Most just want to build a life.

However whilst there is a large amount of racism I'm reminded that during WW2 when American soldiers were in the UK to do a job they were still disliked by many in the communities where they lived.
Men seem very threatened by large groups of men from other countries whatever their race.

Ah, an article to clear white guilt. Are the millions of Africans who were enslaved for hundreds of years and their descendants supposed to be grateful that some brits had morals and opposed slavery? This is white saviour complex at its best. Instead of agreeing that it was a shameful time in history you attempt to justify british actions. They did not do africans a favour and it would take centuries for africa to recover and enjoy some stability. The amount of "compensation" paid to slave owners (not africans) is nothing compared to the profit Britain made from the slave trade. If you read the article it says that the abolitionists argued that British presence should remain in africa to trade in palm oil which belonged to Africa-they still wouldn't leave Africans alone. The problem many brits have is they only want to claim their "victories" of the past and gloss over their atrocities.

My preferred option would be (probably unworkable):

I) Return all boat arrivals, no exceptions. Cuts out the criminal gangs and removes the incentive to make dangerous crossings (mainly because children can't make an informed choice to take that risk). Done properly it should stop the flow.

II) Take a share of refugees via a European centralised scheme.

III) Most money to go to supporting refugees close to source. Neighbouring countries shouldn't bear that burden alone, and we can 5x or 10x the number of refugees we help because of cost differentials.

IV) Recognise special obligations. The way we abandoned Afghan translators etc was shameful. And we have a special obligation to the general population where we have intervened too (eg Iraq, Afghan). HK was the right call.

VI) With boats shut down, remaining arrivals will be by plane. Destroying documents should be a presumptive refusal. They had documents when they boarded.

VII) Once our system is robust, allow asylum seekers to work. Many are highly skilled.

VIII) Monitor impacts carefully and publish the data (eg crime). This is the hard one because if we are selecting right then many asylum seekers will be highly traumatised. Provide proper support. Separately, if we see patterns of abuse from specific countries, cut them off. The places are still there and they can go to cases more likely to be genuine.

Edited

Makes sense.

Have you actually looked up the definition of racism and bigotry? Have you ever read the history of the slave trade and how its impacted Africa and other nations treatment of Africa today? Its all good all well deflecting and focusing on what's happening in a disgusting video. There is a wider perspective that you are ignoring which has directly contributed to what Africans are facing today. Speaking the truth about Britain's role in colonialism and how its linked to mass emigration today is now racism and bigotry apparently. I live not too far from a hostel housing young male economic migrants. There have been loads of incidents, schoolgirls followed etc. But anyone speaking out is demonised as racist by local politicians, in the national press and on forums like this (I'll never forget the threads), especially the schoolgirl victims themselves. Cologne was the same.

During this time period, humans treated other humans appallingly.
The English were not unique in their disregard for human life and the Africans were not unique in their victimhood of this.

We sent children up chimneys. We sent children down the mines. We sent men off to wars with no regard for for the loss of life. Women have been treated as little more than slaves for a millennia.

Most humans were seen as worthless and disposable to most other humans. They didn’t have health care or financial protections. It was all about survival of the fittest. Getting as much as you can, while you can. It’s unreasonable to expect these people to have the same values as we do now. It’s even more unreadable to expect them to have these values 300 hundred years ago but also not have an issue with people treating other people this way right now.

I understand it makes you feel good about yourself, but it’s nonsensical and unhelpful.

Britain didn't end slavery out of the goodness of their hearts - they ended it when it was no longer profitable. Stop trying to paint brits as some great saviours in the midst the their savagery. The trauma Africans suffer to this day is incomparable. Ireland, Cyprus etc are not still bring exploited to this day so what's the point of mentioning them. Everyone has had their hand in africa and it continues to this day. There are corrupt individuals everywhere and them selling slaves doesn't justify Britain's treatment of those slaves. You keep trying to use these false equivalences to justify what brits did.

Slavery was no longer profitable, so Britain decided to end it by paying for the freedom of every slave in the empire? How does that work economically?

Many of these asylum seekers come here because they have family links. Why can’t that family member sponsor them? A) no cost to taxpayer and B) someone would be vouching for the good character.
In fact I think that does happen but it is done quietly. There was a report that when Labour got in to power, they wanted to shut down a boat used for asylum seekers but discovered no one was there and some had been placed with family members already established in Britain.

Why is everyone saying 400 men? Op didn't say all men.

The hotel near us that was used for refugees wasn't all men. Obviously I don't have a breakdown of the people, but there were definitely a fair few children. You could see them playing in the hotel car park.

Possibly because the images we see on the news are of boats full of men arriving illegally into the country.

I'm disgusted by most of the replies you already have OP. The racism is outstanding. I think some people forget how privileged they are not to have been born into a war-torn country etc.

Also I'm confused where the 400 young men comments are coming from. Where did the OP say the asylum seekers were all male?

The fact that locally it is known that a local lad has perpetrated these crimes means it's purely about hate and grasping at anything to use in their arguments as to why the asylum seekers shouldn't be there.

I'd rather live next to 400 asylum seekers than one racist myself. What happened to having compassion for others?

I’d rather live by one racist if I’m being totally honest than 400 young men from third world cultures. I really don’t care about ‘mean words’ anymore
