A large hotel local-ish to us (around 10 miles away) is currently closed for bookings as it is being occupied by just under 400 asylum seekers.

Recently, in our village and a couple of neighbouring ones, there has been a spate of parcels being stolen from doorsteps. I’m sure you can all work out who has taken the blame for this….! Even though one of the perpetrators is known to be a local lad, born and bred in our village, some people are still blaming others..

The comments on Facebook community groups are disgusting.

Since when has it been acceptable to so readily stick the blame upon those literally fleeing their countries?

I honestly feel that as a human race, we are devolving.

The Vikings took slaves from here.

Of course it has had a lasting impact.

How can you be so ignorant of history but simultaneously so sure of your opinion on history?

Did it leave enough impact on brits for them to currently need to go and seek asylum in other countries? You cannot compare what happened to Britain by the Romans to what Britain did and continues to do to other countries. Those other countries are CURRENTLY suffering as a consequence.l of British invasion. Britain is not CURRENTLY suffering as a result of saxons and Romans hence why you're in your cosy bed arguing with me on mumsnet instead being on a dingy.

ExtraOnions · 20/12/2024 22:42

Yep, there were slaves throughout history … no body industrialised and monetised it quote like the British ,.. it’s an absolute stain on our history.

The Empire was no good thing .. the only people who benefitted were a very few, at the top of society (the already wealthy). For a vast majority people the Empire brought nothing but livery and suffering - including the working classes in the country, working in the cotton mills, of down the mines.

My own family moved over from Ireland in the 1920s .. I’m a second generation immigrant, but nobody is bothered about me as I’m White. The only immigration people object to is Brown and Black people

You actually think it’s racist to object to hundreds of young men plonked in hotels often in areas right near to a school? many of whom haven’t even come from a war torn country. Meanwhile our own homeless ignored and refused the privilege of a warm bed for the night.

100% this. ^ Saved me typing it. Most are economic migrants, and it's understandable that many Brits don't want them here. (Genuine refugees are welcome, but not economic migrants.)

It's nearly always young single males too Some apologists will say 'oooh but they are coming to settle and find somewhere and they will bring the women and children later.' I don't believe a word of it.

Pleased to see common sense prevailing on this thread, and 60% of almost 1000 people thinking YABU.

Slavery is a horrendous act which has been utilised the world over by all races, all religions.

And if governments would stop dehumanising others for their own gain, countries would be stable and their citizens wouldn't need to go and seek refuge elsewhere.

What you mean, unlike the asian slave trade? where even today 35.8 million people who live in conditions of slavery are located in Asia, especially India, Pakistan, China and Indonesia

Slavery and slave trade were widespread throughout maritime Asia from the early modern period well into the nineteenth century, and Asian slave trade may was as extensive as its Atlantic counterpart and even more brutal.

Maybe you should be in Asia, informing them also.

You can try to excuse the behaviour of the British with your false equivalency, but, it was a disgraceful episode, that is a total stain on our history.

We took, sold, traded human being .. yes it’s still happening, and those countries should be equally as ashamed.

This notion they “we weren’t that bad, because those people over there are doing it as well”, is repugnant

Okay. I'll use africa as an example as we get lots of migrants and immigrants from there. The west has been exploiting africa for centuries and left it in a worse state than when they arrived. Africa had its own system, governments, cultures and traded resources with other nations. The west came along with weapons and decided to take those resources, change cultures and traditions and take slaves. In a nutshell africa has never recovered from hundreds of years of colonial rule. The west lends money it stole (through Africa's resources) back to africa at high interest rates to purposely keep the nation in a state of dependency. The people are unable to thrive and need a better life so they must migrate/immigrate. It is not that the people just want to come here for fun - our governments have destroyed an entire continent over the years but the west has greatly benefitted from it.

I'm sorry, did that leave generational trauma on Brits? Does it still affect Britain today? Is the country still destabilised today? Was it anywhere close to the level of systemic dehumanising or racially motivated as the slave trade? What a ridiculous comparison to make. Just say you feel no empathy for those suffering in other countries due to british invasion and keep it moving.

Tbf, the Norman conquest does affect Britain today, massively. The vast majority of aristocratic families and large landowners are still their descendants. Interesting fact! (well, IMO...).

“The Ottoman empire was nowhere near as brutal and inhumane as the transatlantic trade.”

Holy shit. Have you read a history book before?

I take it you’ve never heard of Armenia?

The Ottoman empire hasn't left such a lasting and visible effect. That's because the male slaves were castrated though, so little ongoing evidence. I don't really think that's better though, do you, @Giselleb1 ?

They don't only come to the UK they go to other countries as well. Where would you go if your country was war torn or had no jobs, food or an economy so bad your children would suffer? Why can't we try to have compassion for others? We are all human and we would react in the exact same way if the shoe was on the other foot.

No, I thought not.

So tell me which countries in the world have not had periods of disgraceful behavior? Just interested.

how about Khan of the Mongol Empire, Belgium under Leopold II, Assyrians, Neo-Babylonians, Eastern Chu, Vandalic Kingdom, Ilkhanate, Yuan, Timurids, etc. etc. ?

Where do you stop your just trying to use history to justify, Illegals coming into the country putting us all at security risk and over stretching our capacity to function just so they can claim a better life and more benefits than staying in their own country and trying to improve it for their future generations and mainly their wife's and children they leave behind.

Nice idea in principle, but it's just not practical to home everyone who wants to come and live here.

We are a hugely overpopulated country, and the signs of that are obvious. Massive housing crisis, an NHS on life support, people struggling to see a GP/dentist/get school places. Roads absolutely chockablock with traffic, constantly. Infrastructure at breaking point.

We are only a small island, and we cannot accommodate everyone.

Do you know why Swahili is spoken in the DRC?

Kianai · 20/12/2024 23:08

The West didn't chase down and catch African slaves. They traded for the slaves that already existed and had done for quite some time (and still do...).

How do you know they are single men? Are you standing at the borders checking them in or is this something Farage has told you?

RavenhairedRachel · 20/12/2024 23:11

I live not far away from the holiday Inn where there was all the trouble in the summer and I saw it coming. The hotel looked disgusting curtains tied up (why do they do that ? ) .It was near a nice housing estate where values have gone down. The local shops are rife with shop lifters mainly of energy drinks and alcohol. I know this because my sister in law works in one. No one will go in the neighbouring pub / restaurant their profits have plummeted. There's gangs of men hanging around messing about on phones and drinking. No wonder people are fed up.
