Ellen and Portia in the Cotswolds

Was just reading that they have relocated to the Cotswolds from California and have no plans to return to the United States. Good for them, and admire them getting the hell out of Trump’s America.

But AIBU to wonder how they can do this, legally? I see that Portia de Rossi is Australian, does she have some sort of UK nationality by descent? Or is there a way you can just buy your way in if you are rich (eg promising to set up a UK business like a production company or something?)

Not in any way concerned about them choosing to live here, just curious as I know immigration rules are quite tight these days.

I've never heard of these people. I imagine they are subject to the same immigration rules as everyone else

MasterBeth · 18/12/2024 17:14

Who?

Yatzydog · 18/12/2024 17:14

This really excites me! I love these two. I live near the cotswolds, but nowhere near the posh bits.

But why would amercian-based people move to the uk? I know the cotswolds are lovely and nowhere like the actual uk where normal people live. But it is so grey compared to california. Good luck to them though. Hope to see them in a pub (I am pretty sure you don’t get country-pub vibes in the states).

Sorry I can't help you OP.

Ellen fell out of favor in the US IIRC due to some "unpleasantness" towards the staff on her show.

GigiHoliday · 18/12/2024 17:15

Isn't it strange that such influential people don't stay and try to improve things in the US for those less privileged? Can't see any solidarity there, just hypocrisy. It's not like she's fleeing and seeking asylum. Hope she doesn't end up on British TV. She is reportedly a bully, with a delusions of grandeur and power. Not keen.

Who?

Ellen de Generes and Portia de Rossi. Married couple, Ellen was a standup comedienne who came out as gay in the 90s and was a bit of a trailblazer, had a big chat show in the States. Portia de Rossi is an actress, was in Arrested Development.

Immigration rules are tight? Do you know how high the levels of migration to the UK are?

At least the pair are solvent I suppose. But I'd rather they stayed in the US.

I remember this. I always thought she came across as smiley, genuine and nice. The fact she wasnt was quite a shock

Your views are totally irrelevant to the immigration question though.

Do they plan to return to USA if the democrats win the next election? And then return to UK again if republicans win the one after that?

TotallyTwisted · 18/12/2024 17:18

They're rich enough to jet off on holiday every time they need to do a visa run.

FuckItItsFine · 18/12/2024 17:18

I wonder if they’ve been watching Rivals 😄

Well that was very rude op. This is a discussion forum and discussions often go off on tangents

Toopulululu · 18/12/2024 17:20

I don’t know the exact ins and outs of it but if you’re a high net worth individual I’m pretty sure you can get in anywhere you like.

For example, I recall reading that there were quite strict rules around spouse visas now eg you have to have a certain level of income/savings to bring over a spouse from another country, even if the marriage is genuine.

Yes, I know who Ellen De Generes is. It's kind of easier to work out who you're talking about when you give her full name.

How's Chris?

Onlycoffee · 18/12/2024 17:21

If you can support yourself and have no need for public money then I think you can apply to live and work in the UK.
You could look up the immigration rules on the .gov.uk website if you want to know.

It's not like they're the first celebrities to come live here 😂

Yes, and everyone who is part of the discussion is entitled to their opinion about the value of the tangent to the discussion.

There are visas for high net worth individuals if they invest so much in UK companies.

Doesn’t really matter if you don’t know though, does it? You can just scroll on. If you don’t recognise their names you’re unlikely to have read any commentary on their legal position, which is what I was asking about.

Yeah it’s like £25K or at least an amount that would insignificant to them

i imagine it’s a golden visa or artist visa situation. Even America has a golden visa systems, it’s just over $1M
