Ellen and Portia in the Cotswolds

Was just reading that they have relocated to the Cotswolds from California and have no plans to return to the United States. Good for them, and admire them getting the hell out of Trump’s America.

But AIBU to wonder how they can do this, legally? I see that Portia de Rossi is Australian, does she have some sort of UK nationality by descent? Or is there a way you can just buy your way in if you are rich (eg promising to set up a UK business like a production company or something?)

Not in any way concerned about them choosing to live here, just curious as I know immigration rules are quite tight these days.

If EdG has an Irish passport, she can live and work in the UK under the Common Travel Area and her wife can get a spousal visa.

VeryQuaintIrene · 18/12/2024 17:58

Yes, you can do up to 6 months in the UK if you are American.

I was once an "alien of extraordinary ability" in the US pre-green card. It's not just for actually famous people - I got mine for being good at Greek tragedy but every time I came through customs they'd ask if they should know my name!

BunnyLake · 18/12/2024 17:59

It’s different when you’re mega rich isn’t it. It’s not like they’re going to be s drain on resources. If I were very rich I’d hope I could go and live anywhere I wanted. They’ve still got the Montecito place haven’t they so will probably be back and forth, like the Beckhams do.

Pealeaf · 18/12/2024 18:02

Me too, no idea.

Immigration rules are tight? Do you know how high the levels of migration to the UK are?

At least the pair are solvent I suppose. But I'd rather they stayed in the US.

Immigration rules are so lax here- just look at the millions who come and then bring families.

Only positive is these two aren’t going to be taking a council house and will pay privately for medical care.

VeryQuaintIrene · 18/12/2024 18:21

I don't think they are that lax any more - you have to show an income of 36K to be able to bring your spouse and I think it's going up?

Doubt the “illegals” or student visa overstayers have that money.

EachandEveryone · 18/12/2024 18:25

I hope they’ve brought all their rescue animals with them.

I doubt they'll spend much time in Oz. Portia is plain old Mandy Rogers there.

Lol. Its not got the same ring, has it Grin

Meganssweatycrotch · 18/12/2024 18:28

Tier 1 investment visa maybe.

I would imagine that the two under discussion have a much higher income than that. They are not going to be taking up school places, using the local NHS dentist/GP.

Do you think they watched rivals?

Most countries if you have enough savings to show you’re not a drain on the state - you can move there. I’m sure it’s the same here - likewise if she’s planning to work, and doesn’t have millions in savings, she can prob get a Tier One visa with her background x

That likely answers the question.

Her maternal grandmother was Irish

This really excites me! I love these two. I live near the cotswolds, but nowhere near the posh bits.

But why would amercian-based people move to the uk? I know the cotswolds are lovely and nowhere like the actual uk where normal people live. But it is so grey compared to california. Good luck to them though. Hope to see them in a pub (I am pretty sure you don’t get country-pub vibes in the states).

Sorry I can't help you OP.

Oooh I hope you do meet them in the pub! And then you become friends and it will be like The Holiday. I have always thought that Portia seems very sweet, and there's something very ethereal about her. I respectfully disagree about Ellen though!

crumpet · 18/12/2024 18:51

I think there are plenty of countries where a visa is easy as long as you have enough wealth to prove you won’t be a drain on our public finances.

Zendaya is living over here with Tom Holland and there are many others.

TheSpottedZebra · 18/12/2024 18:55

I think they'd bought or rented their house months before the election, so whether they're here for a bit, or 'for ever', it wasn't a knee-jerk reaction to Trump's victory.

Also, they flip their houses regularly, and have private jet money, so moving across the ocean probably isn't that much of a big deal to them.

But yes, I wonder too about all their animals -even if they've been left with carers, what animal lover could just leave them like that - and also the mud. The Cotswolds are so very muddy throughout winter, and this winter will be especially muddy.

I see her as kind of a female equivalent of James Corden- a very jovial, friendly public persona who is probably perfectly amiable to friends or to people she wants to please or impress, and a dick to anyone she considers beneath her.

This, 100%

Whatname44 · 19/12/2024 09:29

Isn't she also apparently a "friend" of diddy's and attended his parties
