To be worried about what the Labour government will do next?

1000 replies

Scenicgirl · 17/12/2024 22:46

Let's be honest, Labour has been a massive disappointment for this country, pissing off the pensioners with taking away the WFA, the farmers, NI changes which impact employers, immigration etc and today refusing compensation to the WASPI women after they ridiculed the Conservatives when they didn't commit to a solution. Don't we deserve better than this constant shit show of lies and deceptions which were clearly spouted out purely to gain power?
For the 1st time in my life, I worry about where we are heading.

Tax advisor here. Why aren’t they closing the loopholes so international corporations pay their tax. Clues in the ‘international’ part of their name. International rules for international companies. The OECD is working towards making companies pay tax but it’s a long process which can only be achieved by countries working together. Practically nothing Labour can do about it. Why would any government not be getting all the taxes it possibly can from companies?

There are things they can do. For instance large internationals avoid tax via loan or franchise agreements that cost as much as their profit in the UK. They then make no profit it’s extracted to the parent company. There has to be a way to legislate re that. Increase VAT and reduce corporation tax maybe.Or make a tax payable on transactions not profit but at a very low level eg 10%. I always thought that a tax on deliveries would be good. As long as there is a corresponding reduction in corporation tax to offset for companies that do pay their fair taxes. Eg a delivery tax of 5 % value of goods delivered or bought offset able against corporation tax.

I agree OP. But all we can do is roll with it atm, and try and get to the next GE without too much damage being done. They’ll be a one term party, and then hopefully we can get someone in who actually listens to the electorate.

This.

My approach is to batten down the hatches, cease all unnecessary expenditure and just survive somehow until 2029.

Labour will be so hated by then, they will be unelectable for a generation, which is not a good thing but is a consequence of the idiot currently in charge.

The best we can hope for is a coalition government next time, that excludes Labour.

We're between a rock and a hard place really. Tories were shit, this new right- wing labour are worse and loony reform will probably win the next election. God help us! Can't we have a government that works for the interests of the people of the country and not the globalists?
Brexit was not exactly the Tories fault. They told people not to vote for it.

This with bells on !

But this would totally destroy the City of London and much as lefties hate the city of London financial services paid 13% of all UK tax last year. Which is why it hasn’t been done.

Ytcsghisn · 18/12/2024 06:37

It shows how poor and tribal the mentality of people on here is. They are happy to see Labour ruin the country because Tories were bad. Labour must be let off the hook and allowed to have a go at destroying the economy, because, we’ll…it’s their turn now.

Apparently Labour are so competent that the economy shrank for the last two months, unemployment is edging up, inflation is up, borrowing is up, taxes have also increased. You could not make this up. They haven’t tried to show how bad they are over a few years. They have started hitting what’s left of the economy in 6 months.

But of course all you will see on here is whataboutery. But what about the Tories. Yeah, what about the Tories? They are not in power anymore, Labour are. Do you struggle to think about standards of one without comparing to another. Are your cognitive abilities so limited. MN almost proves that some people should not be allowed to vote.

But hey, what a destroyed economy, enjoy getting poorer as long as Labour are in power.

This is MN. Expecting people to understand how the economy works or having and knowledge about fiscal topics is like expecting Hannibal Lecter to eat a salad.

They are doing a good enough job already - with the companies leaving The City and relocating to NYC. Shrinking at its fastest rate in over a decade. Quite the achievement.

As MN would say to The City, fuck off and leave then we don’t need your money. Let’s see how that works in reality…

The socialists always hate the rich. Until the rich leave and they come for them. Then they squeal like rats in a trap. Someone’s got to pay for the largesse. And unless you are rich, it will always be you.

It is true though. On here people were dismissive that the economy would shrink and companies would leave. When they couldn’t construct a debate back as the economics are pretty clear…we were all told it wouldn’t happen and if it did…they could fuck off and take their money with them. That is now what is happening. Absolutely mind blowing. Who is paying for the large state now?

Your comments are proving the point - no debate or anything constructive so waaaaah Tory. Genius.

I doubt that very much. Labour will improve services which will be hugely popular. They’d be hard pushed to cause half the damage Tories did across the board.5 years is a long time and I have no doubt that when the contrast of life between a party that only cares about the rich, its members and donors and one that believes in restoring services and sorting out all the mess in every department from the past 14 years is experienced the punlic will vote accordingly.

I think the huge list of massive woes caused by the Tories- sky high immigration. Brexit, broken nhs and education, Truss, partygate, contracts for mates…..will be hard to forget and VAT on private schools and WFA( both needed and popular away from right wing MN) are nothing in comparison.

The Tories must be so desperate the way they hang around on MN.😂

🤣Errr the Tories Brexit cock up caused the finance exodus. We had it so good and they were so dim. The good of the country came second to party politics as it always does with the Tories . Complete utter madness.

I'm afraid blaming those nasty Tories no longer cuts it. Labour is in charge and they are woefully out of their depth.

If the City collapses, there is no money to pay for anything else. I don't care who's in charge but they should, at least, have a working knowledge of how the British economy actually functions.

Bang on 100%!

I find it truly astonishing that to voice an opinion which differs from some of the Labour lambs on MN, it is assumed that you are a high earner, send your children to private school, have wealthy parents, and some of your relatives are farmers!
But never mind when all our food has to be imported because the farmland gets built over and we are paying a premium for everything we eat, because of Labour's policies to supply new houses that no one can afford.

it's not that though @Aduvetday I do not purport to be any sort of genius, obviously, in your view 😃

It's the resorting to insult and denigration from posters such as @Ytcsghisn solely because our points of view may differ.

How can you persuade to an alternative point of view by disparaging someone else's perspective? Is that genius? 😎

Brexit didn’t help. It is now the budget and the taxes which have caused the shrinking of the FTSE at its greatest rate in a decade. Companies are registering in New York and leaving. Companies were literally waiting for the budget to decide.

What’s your point? Just more nonsense and deflection. There is no contribution to the issue at hand. That was the posters point.

No Brexit caused it. We were the gateway to Europe, now we have no part in it. We were the financial centre and that changed hugely after Brexit.

This!!!!

The desperate of shifting blame for the past 14 years to a government that has been in for a few months is hysterical.

The damage the Tories caused is going to take a lot of pain and time to put right.
