Eaten raw chicken- can I do anything?

DH served up a (pre made, cooked from frozen) chicken kyiv with chips tonight. I cut into the kyiv, dipped a load of chips into the garlic butter that ran out, and ate a slice, not looking at it, as I was just looking at the crispy outside coating. Cut it open a bit more and realised it was completely raw inside. 😫

Obviously my AIBU is, AIBU to murder DH for this.

But more practically, is there anything that I can do? Do I just need to wait for the vomiting to start? Is it likely I'll be really ill?

I guess I didn't eat a huge amount, maybe about 20% of the kyiv, but I also had a lot of the garlic butter which would have been all over the raw chicken.

How much of it did you eat?
One mouthful is unlikely to make you ill
Did you fully cook it afterwards?

AllTangledUpInTinselAndTiaras · 17/12/2024 20:50

You'll most probably be just fine.

It was a few mouthfuls. I guess I didn't notice the chicken texture because of the coating.

DH has put it back in the oven but not sure I can stomach the rest.

Could you not actually tell you were eating raw chicken? Guess you’ll find out in a few hours if you’ll be ill or not…

IAmNeverThePerson · 17/12/2024 20:54

Make your peace with God?

tweedledee12 · 17/12/2024 20:54

I thought these were usually pre-cooked? 😳

At worst it'll go through you like a Porsche, at best you'll be absolutely fine.

IAmNeverThePerson · 17/12/2024 20:54

But more seriously you will almost certainly be fine.

ExtraOnions · 17/12/2024 20:55

..when I was in India, and we thought we had a eaten something dodgy, we would drink a neat shot of Feni…or Vodka - we figured it killed off the germs !

mykettle · 17/12/2024 20:56

I once accidentally ate raw chicken, literally barely cooked at all, I waited with dread for the inevitable cramps and d & v..... never came! So you might be lucky!

PinotDragon · 17/12/2024 20:56

Earing raw chicken isn't a guarantee you will be poisoned with salmonella; the chicken has to actually have it before you will get sick. However if it was contaminated with salmonella then you're fucked, small bite or large portion. Only time will tell.

MillyGoat · 17/12/2024 20:56

Aren’t these always pre cooked? Or do you mean you bought it in eg the butchers? If it came from a box of any sort then it will be fine. If it came from the butchers it should be good quality so also fine.

So overall, I think there is a chance you’ll be fine, but not one that I’d stake an attempt on myself!

IAmNeverThePerson · 17/12/2024 20:56

Coke (the drink) will save you from most things if you have any.

Yeah never heard of frozen raw chicken kyiv.

PonyPatter44 · 17/12/2024 20:57

You're really unlikely to get ill from raw chicken in this country, anyway, and a pre-made chicken kyiv is even less likely to make you ill. I'm sure you'll be fine.

Now I fancy a chicken kyiv...

YouveGotAFastCar · 17/12/2024 20:57

You won’t get food poisoning from this. Honestly.

CheeseandMarmiteToastie · 17/12/2024 20:57

What do you think you can do? You can’t un-eat it can you. Hope for the best 🤷🏻‍♀️

Jaehee · 17/12/2024 20:57

if it was pre made and frozen surely it was already cooked? in which case you'll most likely be fine.

if it was actual raw chicken and just a few mouthfuls, you'll probably be ok. it depends on whether there was salmonella or campylobacter there in the first place, which it isn't necessarily, and how much of it etc. i was served properly raw chicken on a skewer in a restaurant, only the outside had been seared, and apart from a lot of anxiety I was fine.

niadainud · 17/12/2024 20:59

What sort of utter moron serves up raw chicken? Did he totally fuck up the timings?

HScully · 17/12/2024 20:59

I did this with a chicken goujon, i thought they were pre cooked! I was fine x

DurhamDurham · 17/12/2024 20:59

My daughter once ate an entire pack of uncooked chicken goujons when she was drunk at 18 year old. She only realised what she had done when she woke up the next day. We all thought she was going to be really ill, she was absolutely fine. Her GP said that it was probably the alcohol in her stomach that stopped the uncooked chicken doing any damage, the vodka cooked/sterilised it.

Bambooozle · 17/12/2024 21:02

It's this one, which refers to raw poultry several times https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/product/sainsburys-ayr-meal-deal-kyiv-taste-the-difference-470g

It was very definitely really pink and raw.

I feel a little bit reassured though although still feel a mix of sick and starving hungry.

Does the coke/vodka stuff actually work?

Or days, if it's campylobacter. Sorry OP.

I don't know, the outside looked really cooked and was crunchy. I can only imagine he put the oven on a really weird setting or temp (he has hotly denied this).

When I lived in Vietnam and encountered some challenging food in remote regions a food scientist told me to drink Coke if I had eaten something that seemed dodgy.
