Eaten raw chicken- can I do anything?

DH served up a (pre made, cooked from frozen) chicken kyiv with chips tonight. I cut into the kyiv, dipped a load of chips into the garlic butter that ran out, and ate a slice, not looking at it, as I was just looking at the crispy outside coating. Cut it open a bit more and realised it was completely raw inside. 😫

Obviously my AIBU is, AIBU to murder DH for this.

But more practically, is there anything that I can do? Do I just need to wait for the vomiting to start? Is it likely I'll be really ill?

I guess I didn't eat a huge amount, maybe about 20% of the kyiv, but I also had a lot of the garlic butter which would have been all over the raw chicken.

..when I was in India, and we thought we had a eaten something dodgy, we would drink a neat shot of Feni…or Vodka - we figured it killed off the germs !

and plenty of water!!!

You’ll probably be fine.

I'm pretty sure that recommending anyone to ingest Lugol's Iodine isn't good advice.....

Providing the advice is recommending around the RDA of it (or a one off dose under the toxic level), it's actually exceptional advice given it has significant impacts to health and the vast majority of the Western population are quite deficient.

I feel fine this morning, so fingers crossed I've escaped. Well, fine as long as I don't think about it!

I'm so pleased! I woke up wondering how you are! A little over invested 🙄

Thanks for thinking of me. I will keep you posted on any non standard bowel movements. 😂

I did the same with a chicken Kiev couple of nights ago I live to tell the tail
No ill affects so far.

I think you are very unlikely to get food poisoning.

Around 2000, the number of UK retail chickens with salmonella was 5.7%

Find out where the chicken was from
I have read that all UK chickens are now vaccinated against salmonella

It's campylobacter you're more likely to get

Bambooozle · 18/12/2024 12:38

Still feel fine and haven't been sick. So I guess I'm safe from salmonella as that would have stayed by now, so just got to wait another couple of days to check I haven't got the other one.

I was surprised as I thought food poisoning would kick in fairly quickly and be over shortly
Ate the chicken Wed, symptoms started Sat, and started 7 days of antibiotics on the Friday

Had some dodgy chicken on Wednesday
Thought I'd got away on Thursday
But I was throwing up by Saturday and Sunday and Monday and Tuesday
Antibiotics on Friday

You mean unlikely to get salmonella - other types of food poisoning are available.

chocolaterevels · 18/12/2024 20:54

This happened to us recently. Both people who ate it were fine. No sickness at all.

hazelnutvanillalatte · 18/12/2024 21:04

This thread inspired me to make chicken kiev for dinner tonight! 😂Possibly missed the point of the thread. Glad you're ok OP

Any update, OP?

I have emetophia and have just ordered the iodine!!!

Omg same I have emetophobia too and literally as soon as I read that comment I went on amazon to look it up and ordered it and also was thinking why have I never heard about this before!

Yep! So can laugh about it a bit now. But I still just had to take off the mini Kyivs from my party food order as I don't know when I'd be able to stomach one again! Have gone right off chicken tbh.

Google it thought and read the bad effects before you take it. I nearly bought it too but what I read worried me.

DoAWheelie · 18/12/2024 22:27

One small bite was enough to make me ill when I did similar a few years ago. It took about 3 days for the sickness to start though. No vomiting, just glued to the toilet and very crampy for 10 days.

Oh why what can happen? To me not much is worse than being sick

NeshButUpNorth · 19/12/2024 23:38

AFAIK with raw chicken, normally the worst that can happen is bacterial infections. i.e. a lot of time in the bathroom. this happened to me once, I was ill for 1-2 weeks

Aside from botulism, I would say the scariest thing to worry about is neuro-toxins from shellfish. I was affected once, it can cause paralysis, permanent memory damage or death. It can be caused by an algal bloom where mussel farms are located. the shellfish live off the algae. People have died from this.

Well I'm glad it wasn't a crispy prawn now!

Still ok. [Touches wood]
