Eaten raw chicken- can I do anything?

DH served up a (pre made, cooked from frozen) chicken kyiv with chips tonight. I cut into the kyiv, dipped a load of chips into the garlic butter that ran out, and ate a slice, not looking at it, as I was just looking at the crispy outside coating. Cut it open a bit more and realised it was completely raw inside. 😫

Obviously my AIBU is, AIBU to murder DH for this.

But more practically, is there anything that I can do? Do I just need to wait for the vomiting to start? Is it likely I'll be really ill?

I guess I didn't eat a huge amount, maybe about 20% of the kyiv, but I also had a lot of the garlic butter which would have been all over the raw chicken.

Early homo sapiens ate raw meat - chicken included.

You may get the shits, but you are very unlikely to die.

Outwiththenorm · 17/12/2024 21:44

DH bit into a Waitrose chicken on a stick thing, not realising it was raw under the breadcrumbs. He only had one bite but got salmonella for about a week. Fingers crossed for you, Op.

Hopefully the freezer killed any germs.
Only time I had serious food poisoning in uk was from cross contamination and very poor hygiene.

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 17/12/2024 21:53

I'm no microbiologist but I'd hope that freezing the chicken killed most of the nasties that might have been in it originally.

If it's been frozen a long time then it's possible the level of campylobacter (if present in the first place) bacteria could reduce slightly, but salmonella isn't destroyed by freezing, it will just pause reproduction.

Edit: studied microbiology.

I thought these were usually pre-cooked? 😳

At worst it'll go through you like a Porsche, at best you'll be absolutely fine.

I believe the legal limit for processing chicken is that it can be cooked no more than seven times.

Trepidfox · 17/12/2024 21:57

Poor you! It's happened now, try and bring your mind into the present. Right now you are absolutely fine (unless I missed a post?) Don't go down the rabbit hole unless you start feeling unwell

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 17/12/2024 21:59

raw chicken only makes you ill if it’s infected. You will hopefully be fine.

Not helpful now as you likely don't have it in but for the future... 6 drops of lugols iodine in water stops food poisoning and sickness bugs almost immediately. Even the worst case of noro will stop with two doses. It's magic. Sometimes the old fashioned remedies are the best.

What is this lugols iodine? You ingest it and it stops norovirus? 😳

They’re not, they are sometimes part cooked so that the breadcrumbs get a slight golden colour, but I’ve never known a chicken Kiev to be precooked, they normally say on the box they contain raw chicken. Randomly, I remember a news article about an elderly lady dying from food poisoning after eating an undercooked Kiev a few years back!

God knows how I remember that!

OP, if you’re not elderly and otherwise in good health you should be fine bar the shits and vomiting at worst

Food poisoning from an undercooked chicken kiev kills grandmother

Dorothy Flannagan, 86, from Stoke-on-Trent died after contracting campylobacter, a common cause of food poisoning. She tragically died at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire.

This thread does make me wonder (again) why humans eat a meat that is so riddled with germs that we can get sick if it's not cooked perfectly, and even if we don't sanitise everything it touched when it was raw. There are much safer foods out there!

Mummyoflittledragon · 17/12/2024 22:07

Dh’s mate eats chicken raw. No joke!

paddyclampster · 17/12/2024 22:12

Any update, OP?

I have emetophia and have just ordered the iodine!!!

It seems to be mainly for the thyroid????

YouveGotAFastCar · 17/12/2024 20:57

You won’t get food poisoning from this. Honestly.

<hollow laugh> Oh but you can. June 2005 - salmonella- I ended up in hospital on a drip (and that was the last time I ate chicken kiev).

It's definitely not a given though and I think the odds are you'll be fine.

My daughter once ate an entire pack of uncooked chicken goujons when she was drunk at 18 year old. She only realised what she had done when she woke up the next day. We all thought she was going to be really ill, she was absolutely fine. Her GP said that it was probably the alcohol in her stomach that stopped the uncooked chicken doing any damage, the vodka cooked/sterilised it.

My brother ate a whole uncooked and frozen chicken Kiev when off his tits drunk. On his knees in front of the freezer. Survived to tell the tale..

I'm trying to do this, I just can't stop thinking about it and just feel queasy now.

Edited

I think I'm in normal health and am just middle aged but reading that article hasn't helped with the fear.

A friend got campylobacter from raw chicken goujons. She was quite unwell.

What 😂 of course raw chicken can make you ill (sorry @Bambooozle !)

But it mostly doesn't 🙄

Oh fuck, was thinking at worst it would be a few days of vomit etc, really can't deal with hospital at Christmas because of this.

Of course DH is in a huff because I should just get over it apparently.

I'm pretty sure that recommending anyone to ingest Lugol's Iodine isn't good advice.....
