Eaten raw chicken- can I do anything?

DH served up a (pre made, cooked from frozen) chicken kyiv with chips tonight. I cut into the kyiv, dipped a load of chips into the garlic butter that ran out, and ate a slice, not looking at it, as I was just looking at the crispy outside coating. Cut it open a bit more and realised it was completely raw inside. 😫

Obviously my AIBU is, AIBU to murder DH for this.

But more practically, is there anything that I can do? Do I just need to wait for the vomiting to start? Is it likely I'll be really ill?

I guess I didn't eat a huge amount, maybe about 20% of the kyiv, but I also had a lot of the garlic butter which would have been all over the raw chicken.

@PonyPatter44 - I'm not sure where you get that idea from. Of course you can get ill from raw chicken in this country. I had salmonella from chicken (confirmed by lab tests), and it wasn't much fun.

BUT - it's definitely not the case that all raw chicken will make you ill. @OP - it's not a foregone conclusion that you'll be ill. There's nothing you can do - you're just going to have to wait and see. Salmonella can take quite a while to incubate, so give it 48hrs or so. It's unlikely that you'll be ill though, so I wouldn't worry about it too much. Just keep your fingers crossed, and hydrate well, just in case...

Vodka and other home remedies won't do anything, the alcohol content in vodka wouldn't even be effective as a hand sanitiser. Your stomach acid is designed to take care of it. If you take antacids of any sort then give them a miss tonight.

What sort of utter moron serves up raw chicken? Did he totally fuck up the timings?

Someone who followed the packet instructions and didn’t cut it open to check because it’s a chicken Kiev? It’s not like he just put a raw chicken on a plate and went “that’s it.”

I don't know, the outside looked really cooked and was crunchy. I can only imagine he put the oven on a really weird setting or temp (he has hotly denied this).

Could he have grilled it?

It's this one, which refers to raw poultry several times https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/product/sainsburys-ayr-meal-deal-kyiv-taste-the-difference-470g

It was very definitely really pink and raw.

I feel a little bit reassured though although still feel a mix of sick and starving hungry.

Does the coke/vodka stuff actually work?

No, it won’t. Your stomach is literally full of acid!! But while there’s a risk I’d be surprised if you got ill and I say that as someone who’d rather eat tough chicken than even chance it!

TwinklyAmberOrca · 17/12/2024 21:10

It's been in the oven for a decent period of time which will kill any bacteria.

You only need to get the inside bit to 74C.

So you will be fine.

StarDolphins · 17/12/2024 21:11

I’m so cautious with chicken kievs, they are so easy to undercook, there’s always a bit right inside that’s not cooked at all so I end up
overcokking it now, which isn’t nice either.

Hopefully you’ll be fine!

ApplesinmyPocket · 17/12/2024 21:12

What have we done to ourselves that we are genuinely scared that a mouthful of raw chicken is going to make us ill? Who told us that?

We get this topic every few months on MN. I can't remember any that ended 'so I was up all night vomiting.'

Bambooozle · 17/12/2024 21:15

niadainud · 17/12/2024 21:08

Could he have grilled it?

Oh, possibly.

Ok, so no coke or vodka, just wait it out and cross my fingers.

Thank you for the reassuring stories. I do just feel very sick now although I recognise it's psychological.

Don't think I'll be having another one for a long time.

What I did to my else's was not check the chicken was cooked enough. Ended up with campylobacter, was very unwell for 3 weeks.

RedRiverShore5 · 17/12/2024 21:17

He probably followed the timing for fridge instead of frozen if the crumb was cooked

Londonrach1 · 17/12/2024 21:19

Sadly it's a wait and see op...you might be lucky....

3 weeks! 😭

I believe the prevalence of salmonella in fresh chicken is about 5%. So 95% is unaffected.

The likelihood of you being unwell is very small. But not zero.

LaughingCat · 17/12/2024 21:25

I’ve eaten mouthfuls of chicken raw several times by mistake before (our oven is old and temperamental, and if I’m distracted when I start eating…it happens). Never been ill from it. I’ll happily eat beef, eggs and fish raw and certainly eaten chicken sashimi in Japan - British chicken’s a bit dicier but you’ll likely be fine.

Luddite26 · 17/12/2024 21:26

Hopefully you will be ok. But I would not eat anything now for a while so you have nothing in you feeding a bug. No dairy in your drinks etc.
When dd had terrible salmonella from a cross contamination incident at school the doctor said flat coke and plain crisps only. I know now it's bart. I think it took about 30 hours from the meal till she was writhing on the floor in pain in the middle of the night.

ExtraOnions · 17/12/2024 21:29

Have the Vodka … if it doesn’t work for the chicken, at least it will help you sleep

Boeufsurletoit · 17/12/2024 21:30

If you feel sick OP it might be best to let it happen. I ate half a sausage once that tasted a bit wrong and made me sick shortly after. Couldn't have been food poisoning so quickly, but I do feel like my stomach also thought was something wrong with it so made me nauseous enough to send it straight back.

2dogsandabudgie · 17/12/2024 21:31

It's likely the slice you ate was cooked as you would have cut into the outer part first and if it was raw it would have felt cold or just warm when you ate it and you would have noticed.

DaisyDuck50 · 17/12/2024 21:34

I'm hoping you will be ok, however I got campylobacter from chicken goujons- symptoms started about 36 hours after I had eaten 3 of them. That was nasty, so much so that i can't stomach chicken anymore

Iamthemoom · 17/12/2024 21:35

Not helpful now as you likely don't have it in but for the future... 6 drops of lugols iodine in water stops food poisoning and sickness bugs almost immediately. Even the worst case of noro will stop with two doses. It's magic. Sometimes the old fashioned remedies are the best.

NotYourSaviour · 17/12/2024 21:36

I posted something similar (different username) not that long ago - DH put a lovely butcher's chicken quarter in the air fryer for me, and I ate a bit of the outside before cutting further and finding it was still raw inside.

I didn't eat any of the raw part but I was convinced that the outer part would be affected - I was counting down from 48 hrs to 7 days for salmonella and 5 to 9 days (or something) for campylobacter.

I was absolutely fine. I am very phobic about such things but from the terrible things I've read on here and elsewhere, the overwhelming likelihood is that you'll be fine. Good luck!

What 😂 of course raw chicken can make you ill (sorry @Bambooozle !)

JadeScroller · 17/12/2024 21:38

Honestly, you’ll most likely be fine. Raw chicken obviously carries a risk of certain bacteria which can make you ill but it’s far from guaranteed and you didn’t eat much. By far the most likely outcome is that you won’t experience any consequences at all.

AllTangledUpInTinselAndTiaras · 17/12/2024 21:41

It can make you ill but the vast majority of the time it won't.

Doesn't help you if you're an outlier, of course.
