Tbh after eating around 25 of them as a staff dinner (if it's free I'll eat anything ☺️) and serving around 10 million in December, I'd much rather have something else when I've got an option.

If it helps I don't even mention it, but will choose something else if the option is there, it's normally other people who make the big deal about it, just aghast that I have quietly chosen something else other than turkey and like to tell me I only don't like it because I can't cook, or I'm making a point..... When all I've done is not choose turkey to eat, and not even mentioned if I like it or not (I do as it happens) they've clocked I have chosen something and decided I'm only doing it to be performative..... made a big deal out of a total non event while I'm happily enjoying my not turkey dinner 🤷🏼‍♀️

CagedSilverFrame · 17/12/2024 18:32

Don’t let anyone brine your turkey. Husband has done this at least twice.
The first time, it was moist, but lacking in taste, the next time lacking in taste and salty as all hell.

Never again, I’d like turkey to at least taste and smell like turkey, and I don’t care if it’s dry.

Mimilamore · 17/12/2024 18:33

Yup, know the type!

Damnloginpopup · 17/12/2024 18:35

I love turkey. Neither myself nor my mum have ever cooked a dry one (cold leftover breast goes a bit dry though I suppose). She cooks fresh or frozen, I usually cook frozen..her largest ever was 32lb - home reared - before she sawed the legs off to fit in the oven (they weighed either 7lb or 9lb from memory).

Lots of basting. Sausage meat stuffing. That's her method. I roast it breast down in water for the first half then turn it - this is actually the method for wild goose which is very lean and often drier than a menopausal minge.

I particularly hate "turkey is boring, we have it every year. We are having chicken instead."

"I have chicken every fucking week you miserable fucker" say I, before I scoff some more marzipan 😁

Goose is absolutely game.

Are you thinking of grouse? The overwhelming majority of geese eaten in the UK are farmed, eg emden.

Interesting, I think it's become quite a "thing" to turn your nose up at having turkey at Christmas and people who do it are very vocal about it.

I think the same. A Dbro and SiL are very vocal about it. Though I either read or heard a top chef the other day, saying he loves turkey! Usual problem is that people overcook it.

To me, the smell of the turkey cooking is an essential part of Christmas Day. I really like roast beef, but not for Christmas. OTOH roast pork can feel fairly Cnristmassy to me, mainly because my DM often cooked it on Boxing Day - it was a bit like a 2nd Christmas Dinner - only minus the crackers. 🙁

MushMonster · 17/12/2024 18:39

They can turn their nose up, who cares?
I do not like sprouts.... yes, I have tried them in several ways and no, thanks, I do not want suggestions on how to cook it or eat it.
It is on the table, sometimes I cooked it. I do not really make a big deal out of it. But I do warn people in advance that I will not eat the stuff....
Am I in the naughty list?

Stepfordian · 17/12/2024 18:40

Every year my mum says she doesn’t like turkey, she’s not having it for Christmas dinner then has it for Christmas dinner and starts the cycle again 🙄 well last year she finally had beef instead and declared it wasn’t ‘Christmassy’ enough and she’s going back to turkey 🤣

blackheartsgirl · 17/12/2024 18:41

I know how to cook a turkey. I still don’t like it that much, never have.

I still buy one and cook it though, cos the kids like it. I just eat beef instead. No biggie 🤷‍♀️

BoobyDazzler · 17/12/2024 18:42

MondayYogurt · 17/12/2024 18:29

Interesting, thanks
Perhaps some people are more sensitive to the cheap flavour ones, while others just don’t notice?

Tbf my mil makes decent turkey, moist, with reasonable flavour and texture, and I can guarantee she only buys it from Asda. There’s a lot to be said for how you cook it.

CandyStripedCottonBedsheet · 17/12/2024 18:45

Haven't rtft so apologies if I'm repeating anyone else, but the Sprout Twats are way worse.

"BLLEEAUUGHHRRGRH I COULD NEVER EAT A SPROUT UUUGGHHH ITS A FART IN SPHERICAL VEGETABLE FORM"

No David, the delicious cruciferous delight will not kill you, it's fine not to like it but seriously shutthefuckupaboutit

But, you can have mine! It is a win win situation!

SpikeGilesSandwich · 17/12/2024 18:50

Just eat whatever you want, who cares? I don't mind turkey but I don't have to have it for Christmas, we have whatever we fancy that year, it varies massively. It's just an excuse to spend more than usual on food and have some crackers with silly hats that fit no one. (I do put my own gifts in though)
I look forward to Christmas dinner because it's a bit of extravagance, not because it's the same bloody thing every year. I don't go on about it though, no one would know what we are having unless they specifically ask. 🤷🏻‍♀️

SybilTheSpy · 17/12/2024 18:51

Oh yeah, I'm a turkey hater ✊ Not particularly loud or vocal about it tbh. Maybe I should lean into being more of a mouthy anti-turkey type. But it's definitely bottom of the roast dinner league table. Ain't no disputing that.

BobbyBiscuits · 17/12/2024 18:54

Haha! I would hope it's only their 'personality' on Christmas, as the rest of year it's pretty easy to dodge. I personally love it but only once a year.
The one thing I hate is people making turkey mince burgers claiming they're just as good as normal ones but so much healthier. Erm, no. They are shite. Lol.
So maybe I've got too much turkey hatred in my own personality!
If someone else was cooking me Xmas dinner there's no way I'd be complaining though. Whatever meat they served.

Sistertwo · 17/12/2024 18:58

I have never cooked a Christmas turkey, or had it for Christmas day for at least 30 years, and I am 55. I don't mention it unless people ask, but we tend to have a very nice piece of beef. Does that make me a turkey bore?

5128gap · 17/12/2024 18:58

I LOVE turkey. Sadly my personality is being vegan so I have to turn my nose up at it with the other turkey dodgers, shake my head in sorrow as it arrives on the table, and performatively eat a nut roast.

Shittyproblem · 17/12/2024 19:00

"Yes. Going going on about it's dry. That's what gravy, cranberry sauce and bread sauce are for."

That's an admission that's it's dry 😁😁FFS

WhatIDoIsEnough · 17/12/2024 19:01

Yep I know the type. Myself dm and mil were chatting about Xmas plans. I simply said the dcs have requested beef and gammon so that's what we're having. Cue both mil and dm. Oh we're not bothering with turkey. It's dry. It's tasteless. Can't stand it.
Couldn't help but say, you didn't mind it last year when I cooked it. It wasn't dry nor tasteless. In fact you both asked to take leftovers home !

My dm has mentioned not having turkey probably 10 times this year.

BunnyLake · 17/12/2024 19:02

I only ever buy crowns nowadays and I’ll usually try and get something pre-prepared (not cooked) from M&S, and a gammon (or ham) joint. I try to get as much as I can pre-prepared as I don’t want to spend all day in the kitchen as I have done before.

asthecrowdwaschantingmore · 17/12/2024 19:26

I have never been a fan of turkey and we don't have it at holidays, but almost no one in my life actually knows that I don't like it.

GettingStuffed · 17/12/2024 19:29

DH has perfected the turkey over the years and I make phenomenal gravy with the juices and so it should with herbs, butter, bacon and a bottle of wine.

I'm not keen on the breast but happily eat the leg and wing meat.

Craftymam · 17/12/2024 19:32

Turkey is nice! To me it’s like chicken thigh flavour ish.

Chicken breast is pretty awful even though I eat a fair amount of it. I always think I should have more turkey year round.

Mirabai · 17/12/2024 19:40

It’s perfectly possible to cook Turkey without it going dry. If you had dry chicken you would know it was overcooked, Turkey is no different.

crockofshite · 17/12/2024 19:41

LoobyDoop2 · 17/12/2024 16:23

It’s so tedious! And what they’re actually saying is they don’t know how to cook turkey. Mine isn’t dry and horrible. It must actually take some effort to get something covered in bacon to be dry.

All my parents and in-laws are vocal turkey haters. I have been presented with every kind of greasy game bird turkey alternative in existence (and yes, that could well be bad cooking as well). Goose was a particular low.

Turkey is dry unless you smother it with butter and other stuff. And it's tasteless, pointless and boring.

Ive always said so and never bother with it..... At home.

I have chosen it for my works dinner though, I'm expecting the roasties to be worth it.
