My mum makes hating poultry , an entire personality trait ( a very annoying one ) , she even calls it “ dead bird”

BoobyDazzler · 17/12/2024 18:09

Give over, if mil wasn’t coming we’d have beef wellington.

we’re having turkey (for her - crown, I can’t be dealing with that big bony bird) and ham (for snacks) AND beef (for me!)

There'll be no leftovers beyond the end of Boxing Day.

Christmas = meat imo 🤤

Goose isn't "game bird". Takes some effort to get it wrong 🤣🤣

Goose is absolutely game.

StrawberryWater · 17/12/2024 18:11

Every piece of turkey I have ever eaten has been as dry as my arsehole an I've eaten it at some very posh London restaurants. It's just not for me.

Every other Christmas food though and I'll eat it by the bucket load. Anyone who hates sprouts send them my way! Hate Christmas cake? I'll eat that too. Nom, nom.

People who like chicken but not turkey.... eyeroll

Dymaxion · 17/12/2024 18:12

We have never had it, but its only one part of the meal, we just choose another meat to go with the four thousand potato products I cook Grin

But what should they say if they don’t like turkey and you’re offering them your turkey?

What times dinner? I’m on my way 😂

EnglishGirlApproximately · 17/12/2024 18:13

These are the same people that pop up on celebrity gossip threads to declare they've never heard of them, or recommend a gite in rural France when someone has asked for recommendations for All inclusive in Tenerife 😉

LadySlipper · 17/12/2024 18:13

Well I love it and I could eat a turkey dinner every day of Dec and leftovers until 6 Jan.

Squirrelblanket · 17/12/2024 18:14

Yes I know the people you mean. It's such a shame when people can't cook very well.

Sophiasguitar · 17/12/2024 18:14

Now often do you all eat turkey?

Delphiniumandlupins · 17/12/2024 18:16

LoobyDoop2 · 17/12/2024 16:23

It’s so tedious! And what they’re actually saying is they don’t know how to cook turkey. Mine isn’t dry and horrible. It must actually take some effort to get something covered in bacon to be dry.

All my parents and in-laws are vocal turkey haters. I have been presented with every kind of greasy game bird turkey alternative in existence (and yes, that could well be bad cooking as well). Goose was a particular low.

Or "If turkey was nice we'd eat it more than once a year" accompanied by a tinkly laugh. My turkey IS nice and my family eat it regularly for celebrations.

StopStartStop · 17/12/2024 18:16

I've had nine turkey dinners already, this December. Throughout the year I eat turkey once a week. My dinners don't have roast potatoes with them... except the special Christmas Day or near one. There is no turkey in my house at the moment but I'm hoping to fix that tomorrow.

Copernicus321 · 17/12/2024 18:17

It's a tale of 2 birds really, you pay your money and takes your choice.

(i) Low welfare turkeys that have been culled, wet plucked, drawn and frozen without hanging and then defrosted require a much longer cook time, can easily be dry and tasteless. One of these 15lb turkey takes 5 1/2 hours to cook. These form the majority of turkeys sold and consumed at Christmas.

(ii) High welfare fresh turkeys that have been culled, dry plucked, hung for a couple of weeks to mature with their innards in a chiller, then drawn before handing over to the customer cook really quickly, are moist and full of flavour. One of these 15lb turkeys takes 2 1/2 hours to cook.

As an aside, the quality of the feed also plays a huge role in the development of flavour. Again, this depends on the welfare regime.

A high welfare fresh turkey costs 4 to 6 times that of a low welfare frozen turkey.

LindorDoubleChoc · 17/12/2024 18:17

Anyone who loudly declares they don't like any food because it makes them feel sick or it makes them gag can also get in the sea afaic.

They pop up on every "foods you don't like" thread, wretching, reaching (yes I have seen this) gagging, yakking and gipping. Ffs get a grip, no one cares.

GenerousGardener · 17/12/2024 18:18

I’m a turkey hater. It tastes vile and the smell of it cooking makes me want to vomit. After that it’s endless rounds of turkey based meals which are equally unappealing as you cannot disguise the taste of the stuff.

That being said, DH loves turkey and Ive always offered to cook him his own turkey crown, if he wants it, but he will be eating it on his own for every meal until it’s gone.

Thepeopleversuswork · 17/12/2024 18:21

I'll bite: I don't like turkey. Or at least I don't see the point of it when you can buy a big chicken for a lot less money and it will taste nicer and be much easier to cook. I'll eat it if its given to me and I would never bang on about it but I would never choose to pay for it.

It doesn't constitute my "entire personality"... if people you know spend that much time talking about it possibly you need more interesting friends?

peachystormy · 17/12/2024 18:22

I thought you meant the country 😂

Ladylangstrand · 17/12/2024 18:24

BunnyLake · 17/12/2024 18:00

I agree that some people like to go on about how they don’t like it and wouldn’t dream of having it etc as if it somehow makes them superior because they’re having beef wellington or goose or whatever instead.

That wasn’t a dig at you @Ladylangstrand I didn’t see your post 😁

Edited

Lol, no offence taken 🤣

Well I don't bang on about it on here but I have a very delicate constitution 😂 count yourself lucky if you can eat anything,

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 17/12/2024 18:28

My parents think I don't like turkey. I have no idea why.

Interesting, thanks
Perhaps some people are more sensitive to the cheap flavour ones, while others just don’t notice?

Howmanymoredays · 17/12/2024 18:30

I think more people have just realised that, even if they don't particularly dislike turkey and it's cooked well, there are other foods they prefer, so why should they eat turkey "just because it's Christmas." All the hysteria about needing to eat turkey on Christmas Day is nonsensical. Surely better to eat the thing they prefer.
It's just become more socially acceptable in recent years to reject arbitrary traditions in favour of eating something tastier.
