They're annoying aren't they?

AIBU?

I feel personally attacked.

(I prefer beef).

I prefer beef. I don't like the texture of turkey. Although my husband has smoked turkey legs like they do at Disney. That's ok.

Here's the link:

I'm not keen on turkey and we do something else but I don't kick up a fuss about it and will eat it if given.

I think people think it's trendy to be anti turkey. It's like a couple of years go when it was eating out on Christmas day v not eating out and views were very polarised and vocal.

Is this a social media thing?

not heard of making pro or anti turkey a whole personality either. Do they sell T shirts?

itoldyouyouwouldntlikeit · 17/12/2024 17:47

We re having cockerel this year. Mainly so we can make jokes about giant cocks with crispy skin in front of the disapproving in laws

Eminybob · 17/12/2024 17:47

This is my mum. I always tell her it's because she doesn't cook it properly as mine is never dry. She also makes not liking sprouts her personality as if she is the first one.

Nolegusta · 17/12/2024 17:48

I've never met anyone like that tbh.
I hate the stuff though.

nadine90 · 17/12/2024 17:49

I know what you mean. I bloody love turkey. And sprouts. In fact at Christmas my personality is pretty much "why don't we eat this all year round?"

Ladylangstrand · 17/12/2024 17:50

I'm not a fan but I don't tell people. I just enjoy my beef Wellington on Christmas day, quietly.

MyGladBiscuit · 17/12/2024 17:51

not as much as those who post daft hyperbole like this! 😆

Spaceid · 17/12/2024 17:53

It can hardly be more boring than chicken! I think a lot of people overcook it because they only have it at Christmas and they’re doing lots of other things. I don’t hate it, I don’t love it, but it’s never dry. We usually have a selection of meats and then all the more to have cold on Boxing Day!!

But turkey is horrible that's why people say these things 😂

AllTheAll · 17/12/2024 17:56

I hated turkey before it was cool to hate turkey. I'm an OG turkey hater with turkey hating street cred.

Stillherestillpraying · 17/12/2024 17:58

snoopfroggydawg · 17/12/2024 16:16

Interesting, I think it's become quite a "thing" to turn your nose up at having turkey at Christmas and people who do it are very vocal about it.

This just made me snort into my tea. You’re right. Same with Xmas pudding

MyBirthdayMonth · 17/12/2024 17:59

Turkey is just about acceptable if it's cold, thinly sliced in a sandwich with mayonnaise and salad, and maybe a bit of bacon to make it taste of something.

BunnyLake · 17/12/2024 18:00

I agree that some people like to go on about how they don’t like it and wouldn’t dream of having it etc as if it somehow makes them superior because they’re having beef wellington or goose or whatever instead.

That wasn’t a dig at you @Ladylangstrand I didn’t see your post 😁

I feel attacked too

I'm a bad cook obviously... I don't remember cooking a turkey when I was 4 but that's when I knew I didn't like turkey, or goose, or duck, or chicken so as I don't like them why would I cook them?

We're having Gammon and Beef this year and if any of my guests have a problem with my bad cooking skills they can go and host ... which they never do

All the people claiming to be great cooks, I wouldn't touch your turkey with a barge pole either, I guess that makes you bad cooks too 😜

TheChosenTwo · 17/12/2024 18:02

I’m a turkey hater, just don’t like the flavour or texture at all.
we never have it for Christmas dinner, we don’t eat it any other time of the year either. Not going to waste a banging Christmas dinner on something I don’t like! Beef and ham all the way for us!

PeapodBurgundy · 17/12/2024 18:05

Genuine question as now I'm curious. Is a turkey difficult to cook? I'm vegetarian so I don't often cook meat. I buy a turkey joint and cover it with bacon as there is only one adult and one child with a delicate appetite who will eat it at my table. I've never done a full turkey before. I can roast a chicken (not a Mumsnet one as I can't carve it. I tried once, the knife hit a bone and I've not faced trying again since 😁) I'm now wondering if that also means I could roast a turkey should the occasion ever call for it, or will I be unknowingly serving dried out misery?

LucastaNoir · 17/12/2024 18:06

I love Christmas dinner and everyone I know has it and loves it. Veggies excepted who have a different nut roast type main with all the trimmings.

is this a class thing? I’ve never met anyone who has anything but turkey for traditional christmas dinner! (I don’t know any meat eaters who don’t eat chicken)

PomandersandRedRibbon · 17/12/2024 18:07

I was listening to nigel slater on Turkey last night in his Christmas chronicles.

Not a fan.

I adore cold sliced turkey in a deli, hand cut but I don't ever fancy it for Xmas day at all. I enjoy school type turkey toast dinners you get at this time of year and it's a nostalgia I think for school dinner. As a child we never had turkey, usually a fabulous rib of beef. My dad cooked the best rib of beef ever I've never had anything come close and his gravy! All sorts sloshed in from port, sherry, veg juice beef stuff..

Amazing.

We have had goose it was OK and duck etc.

sprigatito · 17/12/2024 18:07

I'm always fascinated by the people who angrily recite an obviously well-memorised list of Christmas things they hate. I particularly enjoy it when they do it on MN, on multiple threads. It must be cathartic I suppose. Posts like:

I hate turkey, dry and horrible, just why
Hate Christmas cake
Hate Christmas pudding
Hate mince pies
Can't stand booze in puddings, sherry trifle ugh
Cheese, don't see the appeal
Gravy ruins a meal
Cranberry sauce, fruit with meat, why would you
Pigs in blankets, so salty

BeansOnToast32 · 17/12/2024 18:07

I'm the idiot that buys and cooks turkey every Christmas despite it being my least favourite meat 🤷🏼‍♀️ I just get it for tradition I think. Every year I regret my choice while I'm eating my Christmas dinner but I'll still buy it again the following year.

UndeniablyGenX · 17/12/2024 18:07

I don't mind it, it's just a bit boring so we have something else on Christmas Day and have done for the last 30 years or so.
