To think very few actors can act drunk convincingly?

Just that really, especially on soaps. They just don’t seem to be able to do it convincingly. Can anyone act drunk convincingly without actually getting drunk?

He’s just doing a Keith Richards impression throughout isn’t he?!

Yes. Don’t think he is ever trying to act drunk.

the swaying is only on dry land he’s steady as a rock on a boat.

First person I thought of was Rab C Nesbit - Gregor Fisher...
Beat it!

labtest57 · 16/12/2024 20:30

The dad in Rita Sue and Bob too was a very convincing drunk

Liev Scheiber in Ray Donovan. There was a scene where his character was very drunk and he went downstairs and danced with his son to Walk This Way. Perfect drunken acting.

Still watching Ray Donovan and it's overstayed its welcome. Brilliant when it started and now I'm waiting for it to end because I'm bored with it.

I can remember my school drama teacher telling us that the two hardest things to act were drunk and a role that is significantly younger than you are - and that was more than 40 years ago!
George Cole in Minder was brilliant.

I think portraying someone having a seizure is harder. At least if you’re playing a drunk and all else fails, you could trying having a few drinks.

One soap character had a seizure after taking drugs and just looked as though he was lazing around and trying to scratch his back on the floor. In another soap, a character was diagnosed with epilepsy and had several seizures. The actor struggled with these scenes so much, that he started conveniently collapsing behind a piece of furniture,so you could only see his lower legs and feet.

Richard E Grant does it very well in Withnail and I.

soupfiend · 16/12/2024 21:49

CalicoPusscat · 16/12/2024 06:58

Oh c'mon ever seen With Withnail & I?? Richard E. Grant best drunk ever! IRL he can't drink alcohol as he can't process it

Please help us. We've come on holiday, by mistake!

Nicholas Cage was actually drunk for a lot of Leaving Las Vegas.
All of the best drunk acting I know of, the actors were actually drunk.
Billy Bob Thornton in Bad Santa, genuinely drunk during filming.
Martin Sheen in Apocalypse Now, the scene when he freaked out, really intoxicated.
Practical Magic, Sandra Bullock/ Nicole Kidman/ Stockard Channing & Diane Wiest, in the scene where they have the midnight margueritas in the kitchen, they were really pissed.
Fight Club, the scene where Tyler Durden and well, Tyler Durden, are drunk with golf clubs, Edward Norton and Brad Pitt got drunk on set and started hitting golf balls at catering trucks. The director thought it fit the characters and wrote it into the movie.

@Toopulululu Jealous that you saw Prima Facie live! I've seen it twice but both National Theatre broadcasts, once in the cinema and once at home.

SharpTraybake · 16/12/2024 22:10

Selina Griffiths as Pauline in Benidorm was brilliant! She doesn't drink in real life either.

oobedobe · 16/12/2024 22:21

we just rewatched Superbad and the teenage girl Becca does a great job of 'wasted inexperienced teenager trying to be sexy' v cringe.

Floatlikeafeather2 · 25/12/2024 12:58

Grace Kelly in High Society was excellent and very irritating, which is what most drunk people are, let's face it.

Jazzabel · 25/12/2024 13:11

I think Kellie Bright on Eastenders can do it really well. I remember her saying when they first started doing Linda’s alcohol storyline that she wanted it to be convincing, so she researched it a lot and found that when people are so far gone they go past the lairy stage and go into a sort of quiet zombie like state. And she’s really good at acting that.

NewDogOwner · 25/12/2024 13:35

Ray Winston in Nil By Mouth. Slurry and scary. It's hard to pull off.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 25/12/2024 13:37

My 10 yr old DD just landed the role of Ms Hannigan in her drama school play. She isn't a great singer but claims she didn't need to sing well just sing drunk, and according to herself she plays a great drunk. I think I'm proud!!?

BusterGonad · 25/12/2024 15:37

I agree with John Dunsworth in Trailer Park Boys, he's excellent and Richard E Grant in Withnail and I (I watched it today).

Elsvieta · 26/12/2024 18:16

Yes, it's often done badly, staggering and slurring.

Saw "All Of Us Strangers" the other day and thought Paul Mescal did it brilliantly in the scene where he and Andrew Scott first meet. But then realized he wasn't actually doing much really - he was a bit glassy-eyed but it was more in the writing, in the stuff he was saying - just getting too personal too quickly with a stranger. Truth is, there isn't really any such thing as "acting drunk" because it takes different people in very different ways. It's got to be conveyed in the writing and the acting of the sober characters (in their reactions to the drunk one) that the drunk one is acting out of character.

DarkAndTwisties · 16/12/2024 07:25

I heard someone say that in an interview recently. They were being praised for their drunk acting, I think despite them not ever drinking alcohol in real life, and said this advice.

It's annoying me that I can't remember who it was now.

Richard E Grant?

Chypre · 26/12/2024 18:19

I don’t think it is at all possible to “act drunk” or “act sober” when you’re drunk. Being drunk does not mean being loud/rowdy/clumsy. It’s a physiological body response above all else, you can’t quite fake it - the flushed cheeks, the glassy eyes.

BugsyMaroon · 26/12/2024 18:23

Saucery · 16/12/2024 07:21

Hugh Jackman in The Prestige acted drunk quite well.
Nicholas Cage in Leaving Las Vegas - heartbreakingly so.

yes this. I read that he filmed himself while drunk to act to that. I suspect he was drunk for filming though. he deserved his oscar.

BugsyMaroon · 26/12/2024 18:24

SharpTraybake · 16/12/2024 22:10

Selina Griffiths as Pauline in Benidorm was brilliant! She doesn't drink in real life either.

Yes this as well!

Is that good? I was thinking about watching it

As usual not as good as the book but well worth a watch.
