To think very few actors can act drunk convincingly?

Just that really, especially on soaps. They just don’t seem to be able to do it convincingly. Can anyone act drunk convincingly without actually getting drunk?

Yanbu. The thing is that people eho are drunk tend to be doing their best to act sober. People who are acting drunk tend not to put enough emphasis on that aspect.

Father Jack Hackett? What a character. Feck!

Drink! Drink!

Agree Evan Peters in Mare of Easttown was really good.

I thought Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman were good in the Sherlock episode where they’re drunk.

Giveitashove · 16/12/2024 09:48

Henry Thomas didn't do a bad job aged 10 in ET!

Giveitashove · 16/12/2024 09:49

And Kristen Wiig in Bridesmaids convinced me

Though he drank it on set as he was forced to then was incredibly ill!

No, it wasn't on set. He agreed to do it to try and capture what it was like to be drunk, in preparation.

I always remember a scene in Our Friends In The North where Daniel Craig's character has a fight with his steaming drunk father. That performance (the father's) was utterly convincing. I've been trying to look up the actor's name but can't find it.

Tom Burke (Strike) is convincing. And Jennifer Aniston was too in Friends. She had to do it twice! When she decided she was over Ross and then in Vegas when she got drunk with Ross after he drew on her face. Her “I’m good baby, how you doin?” to Joey was hilarious!

Really? I thought JA and DS "acting" was appalling in those drunk scenes.

GanninHyem · 16/12/2024 10:03

John Dunsworth (RIP) in Trailer Park Boys was an excellent drunk.

Jonny Vegas in Ideal drunk and tripping on mushrooms was also excellent, although he probably had a lot of reality to pull from for those scenes

Dominic West being Jimmy McNulty gets top marks from me

TheCrenchinglyMcQuaffenBrothers · 16/12/2024 10:18

I was going to say Dylan Moran as Bernard Black. And then I realised he may actually have been drunk.

Michael Caine was a great drunk in Educating Rita.

And the girl who played Ivy in Downtown played a great 'tipsy'.

Riapia · 16/12/2024 10:36

Saucery · 16/12/2024 07:18

Michael Caine described it as not acting drunk, but trying to act as if you are extremely sober (or something along those lines).

He said that people who are drunk are usually trying to appear sober, actors need to learn this.

Oh thanks for the clarification. Still sounded bloody awful to have to do!

Mark Wingett as alcoholic Jim Carver in the Bill was absolutely outstanding

Grace Kelly in High Society is very good. Especially funny when dancing with Frank Sinatra. Cant find a clip of that online sadly.

Jodie Comer in Prima Facie plays drunk while also narrating herself being drunk at one point, convincingly.

I have actually seen Prima Facie live but completely forgot that! She’s great in it.

Came back to add...Nick Nolte's portrayal of an alcoholic in the movie 'Warrior' is gut-wrenchingly realistic. I cried for the rest of the movie and it stayed with me for a few days after. The scene may be on YouTube.

the80sweregreat · 16/12/2024 12:55

Stephen Graham was in ' boiling point' as a head chef with addiction problems and he was great. A very real actor!

elegaicprose · 16/12/2024 19:35

What about Peter O'Toole in "Jeffrey Bernard is Unwell"

JubileeJuice · 16/12/2024 19:42

Melissa Rauch does a great drunk scene in the Big Bang Theory.

No, Peter Vaughan played the father of Christopher Ecclestone's character.

This guy (Daniel Craig's character's father) wasn't well known at all and very frustratingly I can't find him by searching online - but for me (daughter of an alcoholic) it was one of the most memorable scenes of the series.
