To think very few actors can act drunk convincingly?

Just that really, especially on soaps. They just don’t seem to be able to do it convincingly. Can anyone act drunk convincingly without actually getting drunk?

@CalicoPusscat I saw it when it came out and really enjoyed it. I hadn't read the book. My friend who had read the book thought it was just OK.

The advice was to act like a drunk person trying to appear sober.

I can remember my school drama teacher telling us that the two hardest things to act were drunk and a role that is significantly younger than you are - and that was more than 40 years ago!
George Cole in Minder was brilliant.

Jodie Comer in Prima Facie plays drunk while also narrating herself being drunk at one point, convincingly.

Phil Mitchell is outstanding (can't remember his name).

He doesn't even have to talk or move, just one look at his face and eyes and I can smell the whisky coming through the screen 😂

Most tragic scenes for me, Jennifer Jason Leigh as Tra La La in Last Exit to Brooklyn. Tough watch, but she is outstanding.

Slightly off topic here, but there’s a Mike Leigh playhouse available to buy on prime called Kiss of Death. DT is the lead, and in the 70s he had mad curly hair! He was great way back then too (although not drunk in that).

James Corden and Ruth Jones in the first episode of Gavin and Stacey do absolutely brilliant drunk acting.

I was coming on to say Nicholas Cage in Leaving Las Vegas but has already been mentioned. Still it's worth another mention as it's an amazing performance from him and from Elizabeth Shue.

Freddie Frinton in Dinner for one. I believe he was also teetotal. Traditional viewing in Germany over Christmas I believe.

Bertie Carvel in Doctor Foster – the scene where she's packed his suitcase and put it in the hall, to throw him out, and he comes in shit-faced.

I watched Hot Fuzz yesterday with my teens. There's a bit towards the end where Simon Pegg and his PC colleague take a drunk home over their shoulders and he falls through the front door and then tries to make himself a fry up. He's a pretty good screen drunk.

Though he drank it on set as he was forced to then was incredibly ill!
