Outdoor flashing Christmas lights are obnoxious & tacky

Skyrainlight · 15/12/2024 21:58

One of my neighbours has recently moved in and has just put up the most hideous Christmas lights, red and yellow then flashing to blue and white, with aggressive unpleasant flashing back and forth. Fortunately they are on the same side of the road as I am so I barely see them, I see the lovely lights on the other side of the road that don't look like a tacky flashing casino. Is it just me or does anyone else dislike these lights?

The paradox of calling out tackiness is that in doing so you become tacky.

And now I am tacky for calling out your tackiness.

Same as saying something isn't 'classy'. By doing so you show your utter lack of class to the world (and also now my lack of class).

The language police.

My Xmas feel wants to be narnia old bbc series. I Want that feeling of walking through the door and seeing the trees and flickering lamp light tumnus cosy cottage/crumpets, hot choclate wind in the willows and animal footprint in the snow.

All these flashing displays are very florida, Disney loud and cheery.
Nothing wrong with that at all but I suspect it suits florida more than uk. Also depends on the housing stock I guess more modern houses suit these displays.

Some lights start on demo mode every time and do crazy flashing unless you press the button a few times. The button is usually outside, so people don't change it.

Personally, I don't use them if I accidentally buy some that do this because I cba to go outside and press the button. Other people just leave them doing random flashing.

The neighbours across from me have left them on demo mode and have a massive projection of snowflakes that somehow keeps ending up reflecting onto my windows. It is awful.

Magnastorm · 16/12/2024 12:50

I put up Christmas lights because my kids like them.

Couldn't give a fuck if joyless bastards think they are tacky.

barbarahunter · 16/12/2024 12:55

I love all things tacky at Christmas! I can't wait until my grandkids spot my waving Santa in the front garden when they arrive. Merry Christmas everyone!

I thought this thread was about FLASHING lights being ‘obnoxious and tacky’? Lots of people posting about their coloured lights, inflatables and whatnot to defend them. I think most of us have said we like all sorts of styles (except blue, quite a few saying never blue to be fair) - but many find FLASHING lights to be unpleasant or disruptive (I’m avoiding the word tacky myself)

Maddy70 · 16/12/2024 13:19

I love to see tacky lights. The more ghastly the better

SkunderlaiSkendi · 16/12/2024 13:44

I actually laughed out loud at 'aggressive christmas lights'

Yes, I was asking about flashing lights. I like coloured lights. It's just the flashing I dislike.

I bloody hate flashing lights, they are a literal eyesore and don't understand why anyone would want to have them

Sia8899 · 16/12/2024 17:46

I don’t like flashing lights either - they scream WARNING to me. I don’t know how people have flashing lights on their trees, it would drive me mad.

But what I’ve found worse this year is the rise of non-Christmassy colours. I don’t know if it’s everywhere or just a trend in my town but about 50% of the houses have pink and turquoise lights. They’re pretty in themselves and would look nice on a summer evening but I don’t think they look festive/Christmassy at all

Skyrainlight · 16/12/2024 18:37

Just received a message from my neighbour (not the one with the flashing lights) that made me chuckle. "What do you think of next doors lights? I'm not too keen on the disco setting. I'm glad I sleep at the back, they left them on all night. Did they keep you awake?"

I can imagine similar conversations are going on across the road. I fortunately have a blackout blind and blackout curtains, but even so there was still a tiny flicker around the edges, not enough to disrupt sleep but it would be for those without blackouts for sure.

I'd hate them too, also what's with the big bow thing everyone is putting on their doors, hideous

Manypaws · 16/12/2024 18:40

I lose all restraint and taste at Christmas

Redyrun · 17/12/2024 07:49

A contradiction in terms perhaps ?

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 17/12/2024 10:40

They are indeed OP. Totally unreasonable on those who can't medically tolerate them, too.

crackfoxy · 17/12/2024 10:42

Yup. Hate flashing lights of any colour. Hate coloured lights/projectors/blow up santas! I am very miserable!

I remember a plea from someone a few years back on here asking for people not to cover the letterbox with the ribbon, her partner was a postie and they were finding it really difficult to post the mail through.

Totally see her point!

KimFan · 17/12/2024 11:35

Live and let live. They may not be to your taste, but as you said, you barely see them so I can't see why they are a problem to you. It's Christmas - let people decorate and celebrate as they wish!

WhatUSeeIsWhatUGet · 17/12/2024 12:41

WalterdelaMare · 15/12/2024 22:01

Me. I hate all the tackiness. Some people have no taste.

I genuinely couldn't agree more.
Bright lights are my nemesis.

Calm down 😂

Skyrainlight · 15/12/2024 22:09

I love Christmas lights, I go out often in the evening in December and walk around and look at the houses that have put up new lights. My favourites are warm white, but I also like the coloured ones. It's just the flashing Vegas I don't like. But I hear what some of you are saying, I will try to lighten up. 😁

That's the Spirit, OP .
Merry Christmas

Duchess379 · 17/12/2024 13:09

lol, don't come to my estate then, we've all got them up 😆🎄

Iheartmysmart · 17/12/2024 13:13

There’s loads round by me, all different styles and colours from tasteful to tasteless but it’s Christmas and it makes people happy. The most annoying ones are white and on a blind bend opposite a t-junction which makes it incredibly difficult to work out if a car is coming or if it’s the lights when driving.
