Outdoor flashing Christmas lights are obnoxious & tacky

Skyrainlight · 15/12/2024 21:58

One of my neighbours has recently moved in and has just put up the most hideous Christmas lights, red and yellow then flashing to blue and white, with aggressive unpleasant flashing back and forth. Fortunately they are on the same side of the road as I am so I barely see them, I see the lovely lights on the other side of the road that don't look like a tacky flashing casino. Is it just me or does anyone else dislike these lights?

'Tis the season to be tatty, tra la la la la...

Beansprout30 · 15/12/2024 22:20

I used to like them but the last couple of years my road has been getting brighter and brighter and now it looks like Las Vegas, so tacky. I’ve come to bed early and can’t bloody sleep due to my room being lit up by the house opposite with bright white lights . Argh

That's very annoying! Fortunately I have black out curtains so the lights won't cause a problem.

No tackier than when people try to make everyone match and be “classy” at Christmas.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 15/12/2024 22:25

I prefer our outdoor icicle lights on static setting but theyr'e on a timer in a plug in the garage and no remote to control them from inside the house. So I tolerate the flashing because I'm not going into the garage every time to turn them onto static.

DappledThings · 15/12/2024 22:28

I'm pretty humbug about Christmas altogether. I'd struggle to be arsed doing any decorating if DH wasn't here to do it. But I went away last weekend and when I got back it was like Christmas had thrown up all over our front garden.

It's a tack fest of 5 different strings of flashing lights in all colours plus a string of 2 foot tall flashing stars on sticks. And I love it. I love how insanely awful it looks. Taste has no place at Christmas. It's hilarious. And will all be staying up till 6 Jan.

Baital · 15/12/2024 22:28

There does need to be a time limit, though, to the light pollution!

I love Christmas lights, I go out often in the evening in December and walk around and look at the houses that have put up new lights. My favourites are warm white, but I also like the coloured ones. It's just the flashing Vegas I don't like. But I hear what some of you are saying, I will try to lighten up. 😁

Pleased that you've seen the light, OP 😉.

Cynic17 · 15/12/2024 22:35

You are totally right, OP.

Yes, this! Lol!

mitogoshigg · 15/12/2024 22:36

@BinghamtonMetz

Completely agree, warm white only here

Thatcastlethere · 15/12/2024 22:37

Oh pull yourself together. It's just a bit of fun. I don't have any personally but it always make me smile when I drive past someone's house and they've really gone to town. Good for them.
I think perhaps the ones that flash too rapidly might be bad for people with epilepsy so I'd think people should avoid having those.. but other than that it's just people enjoying themselves. I like to see that.
Even if I couldn't be arsed to go to those lengths myself.

user1471453601 · 15/12/2024 22:38

Can I ask that you nip next door and ask them where they got them from? Red, yellow, blue and white? They sound right up my street. Thankd, in advance.

100% agree our neighbours across the way have their icicle lights on 'manic flash mode' 😒 we're a warm static white house and the outside matches the tree lights. Might put them on soft twinkle mode Christmas Eve / Christmas Day

DelicateSoundOfEchos · 15/12/2024 22:39

It isn't so much the colour of the lights as I'm a big fan of multicoloured fairy lights, but the blinking of them. It drives me mental. Especially when they're blue lights and I'm forever looking for an ambulance or something.

Thatcastlethere · 15/12/2024 22:42

I actually harbour a view that those people who stick to one colour scheme are more tacky.. like you see the tree is entirely white and grey.. white branches and silver ornaments.. and the stocking are crushed grey velvet..
Just reminds me of chav tactic decor. Crushed velvet lol..
However I would never say that out loud to anyone in real life because more than I think that, I think people should be allowed to enjoy Christmas how they want. There's enough misery in the world without getting cats bum face about someone's colour scheme.

EmmaEmEmz · 15/12/2024 22:45

I love them.

I wish I could afford to put millions of lights and decorations up

Thatcastlethere · 15/12/2024 22:46

I do get a bit cross when the local council decide on blue lights... just what I wanted.. to feel like I'm surrounded by emergency service vehicles and also feel cold. How merry.
Luckily this year they've gone for warm colours.

I drove past someone with violet and pink tiny fairy lights in their trees in the front garden the other day and it did actually look so pretty. Really inviting.
I wouldn't have thought of pink being a good colour for Christmas but it was lovely. Was an old cottage and really suited it.

QuestionableMouse · 15/12/2024 22:46

It depends on the lights.

ForPearlViper · 15/12/2024 22:47

Every time I read a thread like this it puts me in mind of just one person. Hyacinth Bucket.

Toopulululu · 15/12/2024 22:49

I can’t see them so I can’t say whether I like them but hey ho, it’s Christmas, and a few lights here and there are usually fairly jolly. I doubt I’d have an issue with them.

MurdoMunro · 15/12/2024 22:50

I’m all for the sparkles and lights, all the colours or white, artfully wrapped on a tree or strung between the wheely bins, all of it. But the flashing bothers me and I’ve had to put some cardboard over a couple of windows to block out the neighbour’s. As others have said, they are also troublesome for me when I’m driving and even more so the blue ones.

SunshineAfterTheRainR · 15/12/2024 22:51

I love Christmas lights! So cheerful! We have warm yellow ones but I love the coloured ones too. The only ones I don’t appreciate are the flashy ones to be honest.

murasaki · 15/12/2024 22:52

The only thing I don't understand is why you'd ramp up your electricity bill for something you can't personally enjoy from inside your house.

Saying that, thanks house opposite, as your Halloween moving skeleton display was epic, and your Xmas display is pleasing to me.

Still wonder how much it costs you though.

PomandersandRedRibbon · 15/12/2024 22:57

It's all about what atmosphere you're going for though isn't it.
