I would have said David Tennant but I loved him in good omens so maybe sometimes it’s bad direction too.

I stand by the Emma Watson critique. She was super young in HP but she was awful in Beauty and The Beast and Little Women both of which I was really looking forward to.

He takes a lot of hyper, playful roles. Have you seen Des? The acting in that is chilling good.
And that final 15 of GO series 2 broke my heart SO HARD

@LawrenceSMarlowforPresident He plays three very different characters in those films. So nothing to do with subjectivity in this instance, we’re talking facts. Face it, you’re wrong.

I don't think you understand my point. Tom Cruise has limited acting range. It doesn't matter if he plays a hitman in one film and a rock star in another. He lacks the ability to truly inhabit unique individuals. He's always the same in every role; he has no versatility. Further, he can't express emotional nuance.

And evaluating someone's acting ability is always inherently subjective. Just take a look at this thread. There is spirited debate about a number of actors. You can't say one view is "right" and another is "wrong" in any objective sense. We're all just expressing what we believe to be right or wrong.

Completely disagree on Tennant. It depends on the role, he takes a lot of silly, playful roles. But his acting in He's (the show about Dennis Neilson) was incredible. They showed a documentary afterwards which had actual interview footage, and the mannerisms were uncannily spot on.
And that final 15 minutes of Good Omens series 2 is emotionally devastating acting, from both him and Michael Sheen. Every tiny change in expression punches you in the gut.

DES, not he's. Bloody autocorrect

ednakenneth · 15/12/2024 20:35

Jeff goldblum is great in the film Wicked

OhMrBennett · 15/12/2024 20:49

Gal Gadot

CheeboygeeCheeboygee · 15/12/2024 20:50

Did anyone already say Kevin Costner?

Whatinthedoopla · 15/12/2024 20:51

H34th · 15/12/2024 19:51

Zendaya is multi talented. She's been acting in live plays since very young, has already won awards, and she's only just 25.
Every time I see her I feel at ease - she can handle herself in every situation, zero cringe factor.

I disagree

The worst.'actor' of all time is Dereck Thompson who played Charlie in Casualty. Also Johnny Depp, we always say he went to the Marlon Brando school of over acting. ( Sorry @Dappy777 ) Most of the cast of Eastenders. Eddie Redmayne, totally ruined the Les Miserables movie.

I think Johnny Depp is good though I haven't seen him in much. One of my favourite ever movies is Ed Wood. He was brilliant in that

The Rock is not a bad actor at all

That’s very funny.

Liam neeson!!!

CallMeBettyBoop · 15/12/2024 21:11

Hugh Grant has grown into a magnificent actor.

Truly moving in Florence Foster Jenkins, menacing in A Very English Scandal, and heartbreaking in Maurice.

Emma Watson is the worst of the bunch IMO

Bruisername · 15/12/2024 21:14

The problem with a lot of the big name female actors is that it’s not clear how they ended up getting cast in everything. I feel like Nicole Kidman has info on people!

whatever happened to Hilary swank? I thought she was going to be the meryl Streep of her generation

Donsyb · 15/12/2024 21:14

Flyylf · 14/12/2024 17:36

Eddie redmayne…no matter what character they’re all the same and he just pouts

Guessing you didn’t see him on stage in Cabaret?? Very creepy as the MC - he was excellent.

Donsyb · 15/12/2024 21:16

LawrenceSMarlowforPresident · 14/12/2024 17:40

I know I am a minority of one for this choice: Tom Hanks. I absolutely can't stand him. Utterly talentless. I can't fathom why he is adored by so many.

I’m with you. I was made to suffer through Castaway and have never got over it 😂

Justleaveitblankthen · 15/12/2024 21:29

Nic Cage as Italian Captain Correlli 😂
It made John Hurt's and Christian Bales 'Greeks' Oscar worthy by comparison 😁

Penelope Cruz just spoke with her native Spanish accent and hoped that no one would notice any difference it seemed.

Forgiven though, as she is utterly stunning and I love her 😍

I was going to say Keira Knightly too. Also an old film star from years ago-Robert Mitchum- known in our family as Cardboard Mitchum.

Isn't this the crucial difference between a film star and an actor?

Donsyb · 15/12/2024 21:31

FeegleFrenzy · 14/12/2024 18:55

Saw the thread title and immediately thought Keira Knightly, good to see I’m not alone. The other actress from Bend it Like Beckham was much better, she was good in ER as well. But obviously it the same success as KK.

i watched Day of the Jackal earlier and it got me thinking how being successful for actors must be so much down to luck. The lead actress in that was very good, never seen or heard of her before 🤷‍♀️. And there’s much worse actors who are well known.

the child actors in Harry Potter. All still shit. Emma and Daniel anyway. Think Ron bought an ice cream van and left acting?

Edited

The lead actress in the Jackal was in James Bond

KTheGrey · 15/12/2024 21:35

Scout2016 · 15/12/2024 08:21

Kit Harington although not sure how successful he is aside from being John Snow.

He’s not bad in the English language version of Criminal.

KTheGrey · 15/12/2024 21:41

Funkyslippers · 15/12/2024 20:52

I think Johnny Depp is good though I haven't seen him in much. One of my favourite ever movies is Ed Wood. He was brilliant in that

He does act different characters. Jack Sparrow will be his legacy, but in fact he gives great performances in some odd little films, like Dead Man and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Donnie Brasco. Terrifying in Dark Mass. He is genuinely good at acting. His taste is scripts is quirky.

tobee · 15/12/2024 21:44

A lot of these actors are just hampered by the fact that casting directors are asked by producers to just get them to do their schtick. That's what the paying public want to see; Hugh Grant being a posho. He was great as Jeremy Thorpe in A Very English Scandal.

It's not just in the last few years, now she's 90, that producers expect Dame Judi to just phone in a performance. If that's what the public expect why not?

Bernardo1 · 15/12/2024 21:51

Hugh Grant.
He can only play Hugh Grant.

KimberleyClark · 15/12/2024 22:04

I think Dev in Coronation Street is truly abysmal

Is he still going, Dev? My eyes have barely recovered from his awful dalliance with Deirdre Barlow, or whoever she was at the time.
