Oh, and Meryl Streep. She was so terrible and jittery and all over the place in Kramer vs Kramer, I NEVER understood how she won an award for that. She is a terrible actress and way, way, way over-rated. She is known for being known imo more than acting. I will never understand how she ever became a 'thing'. She's manufactured rubbish with zero talent and only marketing and publicity imo.

She was meant to be, nervy, hyper, manic, not eating properly, tense, she even leaves without her suitcase, then after a while she returns for their son, confident,
calm, cooperative.
Hoffman and young Justin Henry excellent foils for Streep’s utterly believable performance.

Keanu Reeves and Keira Knightley

Completely agree!

Also Jason Statham, but I do find him quite watchable. I think it's a case of, "aah, he's trying so hard bless him!"

VacuumPacked · 15/12/2024 16:00

@Lancrelady80 he was funny in Spy! with Melissa McCarthy, sending himself up, especially the very end when MM wakes up in bed with him and his verbal assurance

Unicorntearsofgin · 15/12/2024 16:12

I would have said David Tennant but I loved him in good omens so maybe sometimes it’s bad direction too.

I stand by the Emma Watson critique. She was super young in HP but she was awful in Beauty and The Beast and Little Women both of which I was really looking forward to.

Agree. I thought Emma Watson did a reasonable job in the first HP. It was a bit school panto over-acted, but she caught the tension between Hermione's intellect and insecurity quite nicely, and she was young enough for the over-acting to work in a precocious way.

Unfortunately, now that she's an adult, her lack of acting ability has become more noticeable. To paraphrase Dorothy Parker, she runs the range of human emotions from A to B. Also not helped by her delivery - which is akin to someone freshly numbed from the dentist.

SavageTomato · 15/12/2024 17:22

Cilla Black. Fucking awful yet shovel in our faces for decades.

Itiswhysofew · 15/12/2024 17:30

I really like watching Kiera Knightley. I loved "Last Night" & "Atonement", BILBeckham & Pirates, not so much.

Spaniellover2 · 15/12/2024 17:30

KnopkaPixie · 14/12/2024 17:32

Judi Dench. She is just Judi Dench in everything. Sorry. I like Tracey Ullman as Judi Dench. Tracey Ullman as Judi Dench is much better than Judi Dench as Judi Dench.

I agree. Nothing against Judi Dench, but she is always Judi Dench. Bill Nighy, same. Olivia Coleman, same. They are all ‘national treasures’.

DemiSec9 · 15/12/2024 17:35

Nicole Kidman 100% - she gets some of the best roles and I’ve never understood why …

SabreIsMyFave · 15/12/2024 17:37

Yeah, there are a few One Trick Ponies aren't there? All who are treated like utter legends. Dare I suggest Maggie Smith too? Again, she always has a role as a grumpy curmudgeon of a woman.

Now Kate Winslet. SHE is an actress! She has done many different roles, and is amazing IMO...

Jimmymidoff · 15/12/2024 17:38

Leonardo Dicaprio. Almost always utterly unconvincing. Good in Django Unchained but that's it.

Liam Neeson. Saw him at the theatre in the 80s and I thought someone had thrown a wardrobe on stage. Could not believe he got his first film role let alone all the subsequent ones. Seems like a really lovely, very funny bloke so it's a shame but there we are.

BibbityBobbityToo · 14/12/2024 17:35

Mel Gibson - worst Scottish accent ever.

Michael Caine (can't watch anything with him in it, when I was a kid and had the 'stranger danger' talk at school I kept picturing him so I'm maybe biased about that one).

Pierce Brossnan (sp?) especially mincing about singing ABBA tunes.

There's a face pulled in Mamma Mia by either him when she's singing or her when he's singing, that I think is supposed to be a thoughtful, longing look. But I just see "...did I unplug the iron??"

anon666 · 15/12/2024 17:48

I wouldn't say many or any of these. Whilst most actors are naturally gifted with good looks, voice and poise, I think they are hugely underestimated.

Have any of you tried acting?

George1969 · 15/12/2024 17:52

Paddy Mcguiness, shuts down every program he is in

Tiredmomma86 · 15/12/2024 17:52

Dominic Purcell in prison break. Omfg so wooden

Was a friend of the Beatles

Martin Freeman

Have never understood his success.

suburburban · 15/12/2024 17:57

Not keen on Julia Robert's either

suburburban · 15/12/2024 17:57

Roberts

BySparklyMoose · 15/12/2024 17:57

Yep. Emma Watson, just awful, wooden, I struggled to get through beauty and the beast, which was a shame. She doesn’t seem to be able to empathise, can’t get over herself. I didn’t rate Keira Knightly but she has improved a lot judging by ‘black doves’ which was bonkers but enjoyable.

Vynalbob · 15/12/2024 17:58

The only person on the lists so far that I agree are
Adam Sandler
Russell Brand

Nobody mentioned the bloke that does BORAT 🤢

Bogeyes · 15/12/2024 17:58

Andy pandy is so wooden

Absolutelymad · 15/12/2024 18:08

I can’t stand him in Bridget Jones’s, not Hugh Grant the Mark Darcy man. Same in everything

chaosmaker · 15/12/2024 18:09

The guy who plays Ste Hay in Hollyoaks, he's also won awards but is awful.

Edited for typo

wooda180 · 15/12/2024 18:09

Jenifer Lawrence. Know I'll get some hate for that one but she plays every role the same way. She does seem to be a lovely person though.
