PTA mum with bad attitude or AITA?

School festive celebrations today after school being run by the PTA. They were selling hot drinks, sweets and crispy crème donuts with some songs performed by the school choir. Email clearly states that the celebrations start at 3:30 however all donuts (which were billed as the main event) were already sold by the time we got there at 3:25, 5 minutes BEFORE the celebrations were even due to start.
I asked if there were any donuts left and was abruptly told no, my autistic 6 year old started to cry as I’d promised her one (absolutely my mistake there!) I (politely) replied “oh what a shame, the email said it didn’t start until half past, there’s going to be some disappointed children” The PTA woman then went into a rant saying “if you don’t like it maybe you should volunteer for the PTA, source the donuts, collect the donuts, organise the event and it started at 20 past so you should have got here sooner!” I replied that I wasn’t criticising the PTA, just merely pointing out that the children who didn’t manage to get one would be disappointed and the email clearly says it starts at half past. She said NO, maybe it’s the choir that start at half past. I said “I'm not lying, I’d be happy to show you the email?” She then turned to another PTA woman where they were both clearly talking about me.
My bug bear (as well as being spoken to like an idiot) is that people were walking away with huge boxes fitting 12 donuts and other people just had disappointed kids to deal with. Surely there should be a limit to make it fair.?
Im considering writing to the head and asking them to consider having a limit per person next year to avoid this or AITA who should have managed my child and mines expectations better.?

“Having a go at innocent bystanders”…? You’ve just literally made that up… how bizarre.

It's AIBU. Some people come here looking for a fight. Be glad you don't know them irl.....hopefully.

We also had complaints regarding nestle apparently there were nestle products at the Christmas fair and this companies activities in Africa regarding breastfeeding were all the fault of our pta. You couldn’t make it up,

Oh FFS… is this still being brought up?!

@quantumbutterfly it was OP who picked a fight, with the volunteer PTA woman, who should apparently have been responsible for keeping back a doughnut because OP had promised her child one (despite not actually knowing this). If anyone would be a pain to know on real life, it’s the OP. Not the many of us who have pointed out how unreasonable she’s being.

They’re still breaching the code, so yeah, it’s still being brought up. 🙄

TheaBrandt · 14/12/2024 07:41

Exactly! Op was extremely pass ag to a frazzled volunteer then came on here to double down and even suggested escalating her complaint to the head (?!) and we’re the ones picking a fight?! Too funny.

As none of us were there to be the tone police I think 'picking a fight' is your projection.

It was poorly managed, the PTA mum took out her frustration on op & her child. I think PTA mum sounds a bit chippy.

TheaBrandt · 14/12/2024 08:26

It’s all in the op. She complained to the volunteer face to face and mulled taking it further to the head. That’s the middle class version of picking a fight in anyone’s book!

quantumbutterfly · 14/12/2024 08:43

'oh what a shame. There's going to be a lot of disappointed children.'

Yep, she really laid into PTA woman.🙄

PTAW needs to work on her resilience.

autism or not its not normal behaviour the child wont stand a chance in the real world with this pandering

No it’s not “normal” behaviour, because my child isn’t “normal”! What a callous and uneducated response! You think I want her to be upset? She cannot help it, that is how her brain is wired. You think I don’t know that she is going to struggle in the “real world”?! And she’ll mainly struggle because of people like you. Sod being “normal” if compassionless stupidity is what’s typical!

You seem to have created your own narrative here, no one picked a fight, it was a flippant comment that I now understand could’ve upset the woman. Some of you people are seriously projecting, it’s honestly so bizarre to me. I’ve held my hands up to my own wrong doing now that I see how it could have been received, you must be some kind of angel on earth to have never made a mistake. Congratulations to you oh saintly one 🙄

Please re-read the OP. Is reading comprehension something you struggle with.? I thought of writing to the head to see if there was a way to ensure no kids are left disappointed next time. Was never about complaining about the PTA. You’d know that if you’d read and understood my OP and replies before piling on.

Your made up narrative is an interesting one that’s for sure. Have you considered writing fantasy novels?

I think I'll wait for the film.

Do you think Catherine Tate could play chippy PTAW, she could turn it into comedy, or maybe John Cleese in Basil Fawlty mode.

Who do you fancy for your part op? I think Clare Skinner from outnumbered?

Judging by some of these comments I’m thinking a dramatised version would be a crowd pleaser… maybe Claire Foy as PTA lady and if Olivia Coleman is free to play my part that would be wonderful. Can’t forget the promotional pitchforks given out at the cinema so the audience can play the role of the mumsnet crowd!
Thank you for providing some humour, some of these responses are unreal, and we’re the ‘not normal’ ones! 😳

The PTA Mum sounds knackered, and sick of doing all the work, only for someone to have a whinge about it. You know the PTA mum has kids too, and Christmas to prepare for as well. She's gone out of her way to help, and yes, I would consider that in that context, complaining (and continuing to complain after an explanation was given) does constitute "picking a fight".

OP if it's humour you're after, look no further than the staff-room after you've written to the head teacher.
Dear very busy head teacher, my child likes doughnuts and the nasty PTA women (who have just raised loads of money for the school) sold all the doughnuts before we arrived. Please can you stop your mountain of admin work, risk assessments, protocols, teaching, staff management, training programme, SATs prep etc etc to make sure this doesn't happen again? Perhaps you could formally chastise the PTA, and tell them if they do it again they won't be paid.....oh no, hang on......

I had a mum write a letter to the head about me/the PTA. In retrospect it’s actually hilarious what she wrote and how she thought the head would intervene. He did reply stating that our very tiny PTA did what they could and our fundraising efforts were extremely high given how few people actually ran/helped at events. That wasn’t enough, she kept pushing, got other parents (who never helped) involved and ultimately it’s why I walked away. Her and her friends who knew exactly how to run a PTA lasted all of 3 months before deciding it was too much work and too thankless and the school was without a PTA for about 2 years.

which would work fine with a NT child. And not with a ND child who struggles to understand no matter HOW many times you explain that the stall started before 3:30 even though it said 3:30 and you don’t know why they didn’t adhere to that. you have to restate again and again. It’s exhausting being the parent of a ND child, and the lack of understanding in your comment sums up why. Try to have some sort of understanding of the struggles faced by other parents, who’s kids aren’t perhaps as ‘perfect’ as yours.

See also the judgy threads about kids not being able to sit nicely at a table and use table manners and a knife and fork and not need an iPad etc etc. with more ND awareness around you’d think fellow parents would be more understanding. But no. This mum is called unreasonable for huffing about a donut. It’s not about the donut.

My child has autism and ADHD. But thanks for the lengthy comment.

You were passive aggressive! Own it!

You basically said to a volunteer “your shit organisation has upset my kid” then wanted to complain further! That’s pretty mean!

My friend used to run guides utter voluntary her own kids were toddlers. They did a chill out end of term session and one set of parents actually wrote a letter of complaint that the session wasn’t active enough. Was the last straw she stopped doing it whole thing folded.
