To think this mother should be ashamed of herself

17yr old girl & 18 yr old boy hook up on holiday in Dubai. I believe they may have met over there. The girls mother finds messages on the girls phone when they return to the UK. The mother reports the guy to Dubai police. He gets arrested as sex with anyone under 18yrs is illegal in Dubai. He has now been sentenced to 1 year in prison.

I haven't looked into it much, as far as I can tell it was consensual, a charity called Detained in Dubai have been trying to help (legally I think).

Am I alone in thinking how bloody spiteful the mother is?!? The girl is 17 years old and I think in another report saw that she turned 18 shortly after returning.

Marcus Fakana: Briton, 18, sentenced over Dubai sex with girl, 17

Marcus Fakana has been sentenced for a year over the relationship, a campaign group in Dubai says.

How did those pictures get leaked, they look like they’re are taken at immigration/passport control at Dubai airport

He met the girl on holiday and knew her parents were strict. He also knew that she had to lie to them about meeting him.

He also chose to break the law in a Muslim country where they will happily put you in jail and throw away the key.

I would hate to be the mother that had put this boy in jail and have that on my conscience.. but HIS mother should have taught him better.

Edited

And the boy's Dad? Does he hold no responsibility?

Fucking ridiculous.

His parents knew about her and didn’t advise him to stop fucking around before he found out… and found out he did.

MumOfOneAllAlone · 11/12/2024 21:33

Yanbu, she's an awful person and has done an awful thing to this boy

Considering they are both British citizens or at least both live here, plus the fact that an 18yr old had consensual sex with a 17yr old, would be perfectly legal thing to do here. For the girl’s mother to then get the boy in trouble with the authorities in Dubai just smacks of vindictiveness and dare I say possibly a tinge of racism.

I thought same, but l dont think it says what ethnicity the girl and her mother are.

Don’t get your knickers in a twist over semantics. BOTH parents then 😄

I’m not sure why their identifies would Be kept secret as it was consensual sex between two British teenagers in another country. Given the age of consent is 16 in the UK the daughter and mum
should be named and shamed for what they have done to that poor boy.

There are petition groups on twitter circulating their photos and tagging David Lammy MP in the posts.

In the UK, underage victims, witnesses and perpetrators of sexual crimes have their identities protected by law. Whether that protection stretches to crimes committed abroad I'm not sure. But even if it doesn't, news organizations would almost certainly have policies that forbid naming.

Taught him better? It was a consensual relationship between two youngsters in the same year. A holiday romance. The only mistake he made was not looking up the laws in that backwards country before he went on holiday.

BellesAndGraces · 11/12/2024 21:34

There’s a GoFundMe for Marcus that I have donated to. It will be little consolation to him I’m sure, but I hope he ends up rich and, once he’s free, is given the media space to share his story.

So you think two gay men sharing a room in a UAE country should be against the law? Because it is. So that means it's justified? Get a brain cell.

They would be very foolish to holiday in Dubai.

Out of interest, would people's responses be the same if this had happened in the UK and he was 16, she was 15?

neither the public nor the police would have cared. Only a draconian society would pursue this.

GlasgowGal82 · 11/12/2024 21:35

I feel really sorry for this poor boy and his family. The girl's mother has been very vindictive. I've got a policy of not holidaying in countries with punitive legal regimes, and this is a very good example of why I feel that way.

Cerealkiller4U · 11/12/2024 21:36

It’s unfair based on our laws but he wasn’t within our laws.

however everyone needs to research the laws of the country they’re visiting.

I mean there’s nothing more to it

Yes taught him better than to have a sexual relationship with a girl who’s parents would didsaprove of him. As a mother of a black boy, I know fully well how dangerous this is.

I’m very uncomfortable with the girl’s identity being made public.

Ghosttofu99 · 11/12/2024 21:37

It’s a good example of why people shouldn’t willingly holiday in countries with poor human rights records.

This 100%. Why would anyone want to go? Why would anyone want to support places where human rights violations are rife?

connie26 · 11/12/2024 21:37

Yes, he broke the law in Dubai but come on, there was no need to have this lad jailed. Her daughter must be ashamed of her mother.

Positively thinking this is an "adverse experience" for him and his family that they can move and grow through. No one in their right mind is going to judge him for it, it will be tough for him, but he will survive. He will make some money from this experience.

The girl on the other hand will now be shamed, her mother (who clearly has a vicitm complex) will constantly be on the defensive. The family will be shunned by the community and it will be an awful experience for them.

Im guessing you have read up on life in a Dubai prison
Happy with the strip searches and internals
Happy with being so young in an adult male jail
Happy with loss of liberty sharing 8-30 men in a cell
Happy with the sheer terror

Do you think he will ever forget this and ‘make some money from this experience’. What are you on about 🤯

What about his poor parents too
Who gives a toss about about the mother and her family.
The girls not to blame but she knew her families rules and she broke them. The least she could do was delete the blooding messages.

How would he know that though? Meet the parents before having any kind of relationship with her? It was a holiday romance, how was he to know she had a spiteful bitch as a mother?

cobden28 · 11/12/2024 21:40

The two young people may have been of legal age in the UK to have sex but they should have been made aware of the different laws in other countries, especially in Muslim countries .
Muslim countries have very different attitudes towards sex outside of marriage and this young couple should have been made aware of the laws on this subject before they decided to indulge.
It's tough on the young man, but he broke the law of Dubai and as such he should face the appropriate legal penalty as decided by the legal system over there.
And once he's released from prison, come straight back to the UK and never set foor in Dubai again !

If you are a "mother of a black boy" I highly doubt you know everything your child gets up to for most of the day. Be careful of assuming virtue by judging others on their worst day.

But you bought up an interesting side point about racism in having to be more aware of personal interactions than prehaps the majority race, because they will be judged more harshly even by people who are in the same situation to you.

He will need money to buy basics there.
