17yr old girl & 18 yr old boy hook up on holiday in Dubai. I believe they may have met over there. The girls mother finds messages on the girls phone when they return to the UK. The mother reports the guy to Dubai police. He gets arrested as sex with anyone under 18yrs is illegal in Dubai. He has now been sentenced to 1 year in prison.

I haven't looked into it much, as far as I can tell it was consensual, a charity called Detained in Dubai have been trying to help (legally I think).

Am I alone in thinking how bloody spiteful the mother is?!? The girl is 17 years old and I think in another report saw that she turned 18 shortly after returning.

Given the high number of men who get away with actual rape this seems really harsh.

And now he’s in a scary arse prison miles away from home. I agree that this mother has destroyed her relationship with her daughter. She’s behaved terribly.

No because the crime is sex with someone under 18, the boy is 18 so she hasn’t committed a crime.

This story is appalling, I’ve seen so many comments of ‘look up the laws of where you’re going’ - did any of us do that? Would you? Genuinely, because I don’t know anyone who’d research the age of consent at 17/18 for where they’re going on holiday. I am so baffled why the mum has done this, it makes zero sense.

He's 18 now but he was 17 at the time. They both were. So in your example it would be two 15 year olds. Ludicrous to prosecute either one.

Agree the mother is a bitch and this is outrageously unfair.

But its worth remembering you are subject to the laws of the country you are in however odd and unjust they may seem. Might be worth banging this into the heads of those with DC this age heading off on gap years etc.

I have heard that there was a racial element to this. The boy is black British, the girl is British Asian. Her mother checked the girl’s phone, but didn’t report it until they were safely back home so that her daughter couldn’t be questioned.

I agree this is awful. I can only assume the mum thought he’d get a slap on the wrist. A year in prison in Dubai! It’s just horrifying, I really hope they get him out.

I think the actions of the girl's mother are absolutely despicable. How cold and calculating to wait until they were back in the UK. The poor young lad and his family. Absolutely heart breaking 💔

I read that the girls mum flew home then called the authroities in dubai when they knew the other family was still in holiday and reported them. Its just awful for everyone

I think the mum looked at her daughter’s phone. There’s some conjecture the couple were planning to meet up after they returned to London.

I doubt it's that's uncommon, and I don't think anyone would think the 16 year old should be put in prison if there's just a few months age difference.
