To think this mother should be ashamed of herself

17yr old girl & 18 yr old boy hook up on holiday in Dubai. I believe they may have met over there. The girls mother finds messages on the girls phone when they return to the UK. The mother reports the guy to Dubai police. He gets arrested as sex with anyone under 18yrs is illegal in Dubai. He has now been sentenced to 1 year in prison.

I haven't looked into it much, as far as I can tell it was consensual, a charity called Detained in Dubai have been trying to help (legally I think).

Am I alone in thinking how bloody spiteful the mother is?!? The girl is 17 years old and I think in another report saw that she turned 18 shortly after returning.

Marcus Fakana: Briton, 18, sentenced over Dubai sex with girl, 17

Marcus Fakana has been sentenced for a year over the relationship, a campaign group in Dubai says.

I wonder if there is something more to it.

As a british mother, if your 17yo dd had sex with an 18yo, I'm not sure it would occur to you that since the sex happened in dubai that it was technically illegal. How did the mother even know that the age of consent there is 18? The age of consent here is 16. That's why I wonder what more there is to it.

I’m guessing she originates from that neck of the woods?

Ger1atricMillennial · 11/12/2024 21:09

I think regarding the 15/16 the age of consent has something to do with more than 2-3 years apart. So a 16 yo having sex with a 15 yo would be allowed, but a 21yo having sex with a 15 yo then that would be seen differently?

I assume the 18yo was in Dubai which is how he was arrested, I can't imagine the UK would extradite him for this?

We live in a country where it’s perfectly legal. The mother knows this and had they had done the deed here and she reported it, the police would have fined her for wasting police time. She’d have been the one in the wrong not him.

Yet because they done it in a different continent she took the spiteful opportunity to report him. Why? What did she gain from it?

There’s some conjecture that they were planning to meet up when they got home to London. The mother has scuppered those plans.

Along with any meaningful relationship with her daughter, I would think. Horrible bitch.

Yes, hence the timing.

And @MrTiddlesTheCat
she wouldn’t have been because at 17 she would be considered a minor.
Even though
she’s said it was consensual
she knew she was 17, he didn’t

UndeniablyGenX · 11/12/2024 20:10

Out of interest, would people's responses be the same if this had happened in the UK and he was 16, she was 15?

Or is she was 16 and he was 15?

He broke the law.

This is what happens when you break the law.

We can’t call people who report sexual crimes ‘spiteful’. We don’t know the details.

The daughter also broke the law. We do know the details - the case has been all over the press as has the trial.

The mother waited until her daughter was safely back in England before reporting the boy.

She has also probably scuppered her relationship with her daughter, foolish woman.

Are you sure he didn’t know her age?
I haven’t seen anyone say that before.

The ITVX drama, No return, brilliantly covered a similar situation. I think it's a needed conversation if you have teens.

Ger1atricMillennial · 11/12/2024 21:13

Also if she was ashamed due to the race issue, the whole fricking world knows now don't they.

They said he was looking at 20 years imprisonment to start with, so thank God he only has one year. But a year in their prisons is not going to be the same as our prisons over here. God help him, I hope he can get through it.

Of course, the UK has such a superior prison system ....

On 10 March 2023, the Higher Regional Court of Karlsruhe (Germany) declared extradition of a person from Germany to the UK as “currently inadmissible” due to the lack of guarantees for the person’s protection of fundamental rights. The decision in an unofficial English translation can be found here.

On the face of it she is clearly a bitch. But.

How did she know they’d had sex? Assuming that she wasn’t an active observer, the daughter had to have told her.

Likely the daughter knows what kind of person she is, this won’t have been the first time she’s acted like this, the daughter still told her? Why?

I’m not sure the daughter is all that innocent here either.

She found out by invading her daughters privacy and reading messages on her phone.

My heart goes out to Marcus and his parents, what an absolutely horrific thing they are going through and they must be so terrified. I don’t have the words to describe the woman who reported him, I only hope she is deeply ashamed of what she has done.

MerryChristmasYaFilthyBrusselSprout · 11/12/2024 21:09

I read her culture forbids sex before marriage
and The daughter hid her relationship with Marcus from her parents as they are strict and wouldn’t allow it.

He wouldn't be going to jail here if that were the case.

Hmm British prison Vs UAE prison, wonder which one I would choose. Come on.

Luminousalumnus · 11/12/2024 21:15

English exceptionalism at play here I see. We are not special, this lad is not special. We have to obey the laws of the country we are in, especially when it is fucking Dubai!
My boy would definitely have done this given half a chance, along with underage drinking and God knows what else aged 18. Hence I would never have willing let him go to Dubai.

Spirallingdownwards · 11/12/2024 21:16

LittleFloatingGhost · 11/12/2024 20:17

If the girl had been in Dubai when her mum reported it, would she have been arrested too?

Yes she would have and most likely had a harsher sentence as a woman.

She went through her daughter's phone and found messages.

Optimist2020 · 11/12/2024 21:18

The mum and her daughters pictures are all
over Twitter which hoepfully brings lots of “shame” on the family. The mum is absolutely disgusting and I hope she’s shunned by her community.

She must have suspected though. For strict parents they must have wondered where she was going when she went out to see Marcus.
So I believe they suspected.
However it wasn’t until they got home that she saw the messages and photos on her daughters phone

BellesAndGraces · 11/12/2024 21:19

The mother’s name should be published so that she can face the full consequences of what she has done.
