To think this mother should be ashamed of herself

17yr old girl & 18 yr old boy hook up on holiday in Dubai. I believe they may have met over there. The girls mother finds messages on the girls phone when they return to the UK. The mother reports the guy to Dubai police. He gets arrested as sex with anyone under 18yrs is illegal in Dubai. He has now been sentenced to 1 year in prison.

I haven't looked into it much, as far as I can tell it was consensual, a charity called Detained in Dubai have been trying to help (legally I think).

Am I alone in thinking how bloody spiteful the mother is?!? The girl is 17 years old and I think in another report saw that she turned 18 shortly after returning.

Marcus Fakana: Briton, 18, sentenced over Dubai sex with girl, 17

Marcus Fakana has been sentenced for a year over the relationship, a campaign group in Dubai says.

There’s nothing ridiculous about knowing the laws of the country you’re going to if there’s even a remote chance you might end up in jail for a year!

Even if it was against the law it doesn't change the fact that the mother is a terrible human being who intentionally ruined a young man's life.

Yes, he may have been ignorant of the law and broken it but the mother is the one who is morally reprehensible.

Noodlehen · 11/12/2024 20:58

I do wonder if people would be subconsciously more sympathetic if it was a white boy.
the story is disgustingly, and I really hope that the mother gets her karma.

Fififafa · 11/12/2024 20:58

What was the mother hoping to achieve ? Her daughter’s virginity has gone. Imprisoning the lad isn’t going to bring it back! Her “issue” should be with her daughter, but she chose to target the boy instead. What a nasty piece of work. I feel sorry for the daughter too, having to live with that woman.

Out of interest, would people's responses be the same if this had happened in the UK and he was 16, she was 15?

That it doesn't deserve a 1 year prison sentence or even any prison time at all. 16 year olds do not get imprisoned here for having sex with 15 year olds.

No I don't think the treatment was right. Their laws are why I wouldn't step foot in the place and I support the campaign group. But targeting the girl and her family isn't right either. I think there are a lot of naive Brits who enjoy the Dubai lifestyle but don't consider the consequences. My Dad lived there for a while. He got caught drink driving. Although he got taken to court and got a lecture, because he could just about pay a massive fine of thousands of pounds that's all he got and a massive telling off not to do it again.

”Targeting” is an odd way to phrase it. I think people are absolutely right to criticise the mother.

SuperfluousHen · 11/12/2024 20:57

Under the law in that country.
This is the point. This isn’t England!

But for her mum, who is from England, not Dubai, to report it as a ‘sexual crime’ is fucking pathetic.

ZoeCM · 11/12/2024 20:59

Such a vindictive thing for this woman to do. Wish I believed in karma.

purdypuma · 11/12/2024 20:59

I listened to this being discussed on LBC this afternoon. There was a feeling from a black male caller that the mothers actions were racially motivated as her daughter is Indian & it would be regarded as taboo for her to be involved with a black male as she may consider a black person to be inferior.
Utterly despicable & spiteful behaviour from the mother of the daughter if this is the case & clearly the daughter thankfully does not adhere to the same belief system & is more open minded.

Two completely different points.

I wasn’t addressing the issue of the girl’s mum’s behaviour. Just saying it’s not ridiculous to swot up a little on the laws of the country you’re going to be in, especially a place like Dubai with strict punishments.

MerryChristmasYaFilthyBrusselSprout · 11/12/2024 21:00

They said he was looking at 20 years imprisonment to start with, so thank God he only has one year. But a year in their prisons is not going to be the same as our prisons over here. God help him, I hope he can get through it.

saraclara · 11/12/2024 21:00

I read somewhere that the girl was only two weeks short of her 18th birthday.

The mother's behaviour was unspeakable. If she has any relationship with her daughter after this, I'll be amazed. She certainly doesn't deserve one.

Both the youngsters have had their lives ruined by her.

Thevelvelletes · 11/12/2024 21:00

Who would she have gone running to if it happened in this country?
Motivated by spite or the fact her daughter is sexually active.

I’d expect a caution at most. Not a year in prison! Do you think a 16yr old who has sex with somebody a few weeks shy of 16 should go to prison?

Coconutter24 · 11/12/2024 21:02

Lincoln24 · 11/12/2024 20:28

He's 18 now but he was 17 at the time. They both were. So in your example it would be two 15 year olds. Ludicrous to prosecute either one.

He was 18 at the time she was 17, she’s now 18

Applesandpears23 · 11/12/2024 21:03

I really don’t understand why would go on holiday to Dubai.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 11/12/2024 21:03

Can you even imagine how controlling that mother is, I'd say the girl's life is already hell. I feel so awful for the poor boy, there are a couple of other threads going about it. He will have a very strong public support and that will get him through this, at least I hope. He is in my thoughts

Ilovelifeverymuch · 11/12/2024 21:03

Jellybeanz456 · 11/12/2024 20:43

Well she also broke the law then!!

No she didn't , according to the law in Dubai she was underage because she was under the legal age of 18 and he was already 18.

I don't agree with the boy going to jail etc but we also need to be aware of how countries like Dubai operate.

Ja428 · 11/12/2024 21:04

I wonder if there is something more to it.

As a british mother, if your 17yo dd had sex with an 18yo, I'm not sure it would occur to you that since the sex happened in dubai that it was technically illegal. How did the mother even know that the age of consent there is 18? The age of consent here is 16. That's why I wonder what more there is to it.

MoonKiss · 11/12/2024 21:05

I really hope he gets out of jail asap and reunites with the girl and lives happily ever after, just to piss her mother off.

It took me less than a minute to find out online.

CatalinaLoo · 11/12/2024 21:06

An absolute bitch. It’s unfortunate she hasn’t been named and shamed in the media. She deserves her life being ruined as well.

Lifeomars · 11/12/2024 21:07

Thanks for this, I was not aware of the back story. What a cruel and vindictive thing to do.

Yes. There is more to it. Racism. She is Asian and is infuriated that her daughter brought shame on the family by having sex with a black boy.

We live in a country where it’s perfectly legal. The mother knows this and had they had done the deed here and she reported it, the police would have fined her for wasting police time. She’d have been the one in the wrong not him.

Yet because they done it in a different continent she took the spiteful opportunity to report him. Why? What did she gain from it?

PandoraSox · 11/12/2024 21:09

I think it would have been fair enough (although harsh) if the girl and her mother were Dubai residents. But they weren't, so it was a horrible thing to do.
