To think this mother should be ashamed of herself

17yr old girl & 18 yr old boy hook up on holiday in Dubai. I believe they may have met over there. The girls mother finds messages on the girls phone when they return to the UK. The mother reports the guy to Dubai police. He gets arrested as sex with anyone under 18yrs is illegal in Dubai. He has now been sentenced to 1 year in prison.

I haven't looked into it much, as far as I can tell it was consensual, a charity called Detained in Dubai have been trying to help (legally I think).

Am I alone in thinking how bloody spiteful the mother is?!? The girl is 17 years old and I think in another report saw that she turned 18 shortly after returning.

Marcus Fakana: Briton, 18, sentenced over Dubai sex with girl, 17

Marcus Fakana has been sentenced for a year over the relationship, a campaign group in Dubai says.

Yes, hence the timing.

No, the girl didn’t break any law

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 11/12/2024 19:59

He broke the law.

This is what happens when you break the law.

We can’t call people who report sexual crimes ‘spiteful’. We don’t know the details.

Well she also broke the law then!!

anotherside · 11/12/2024 20:43

What that mother has done will probably screw up her daughter as well.

coxesorangepippin · 11/12/2024 20:43

If the girl had been in Dubai when her mum reported it, would she have been arrested too?

^

Probably. Hence the call when they returned to the safety of the UK

UndeniablyGenX · 11/12/2024 20:10

Out of interest, would people's responses be the same if this had happened in the UK and he was 16, she was 15?

Yes they would as long as it was consensual.

LittleFloatingGhost · 11/12/2024 20:43

MrTiddlesTheCat · 11/12/2024 20:21

Do you think that was deliberate?

If there was a chance she would have been arrested too, definitely. I don’t know the law there, so was asking if that would be the case.

2boyzNosleep · 11/12/2024 20:09

Did you read the article?!????

This isn't something that he would have known, he was on a family holiday with his parents. At 18, I the thought of researching legal age limits of the country wouldn't cross my mind, especially if I hooked up with a person from the UK that was pretty much the same age.

It's not like the typical group of friends going wild on holiday with complete disregard to the laws of the country.

We don't know all the details but I think the government were having 'talks' with Dubai, as they are both UK citizens and sex legal here at 16yrs (apologies if I sound vague, I read about it a month or so ago when it first happened). I doubt he would have(crap) support from them or the charity of he were a rapist.

Also, the mum/family of the girl must have been comfortable for her to be left on her own at some point, or she sneaked off.

Edited

Ignorance of the law is no defence.

Optimist2020 · 11/12/2024 20:44

I read @2boyzNosleep the mum to the girl is British Asian and couldn’t bare the thought of her daughter having sex with a black male (and possibly the repercussions that would bring within her community) and decided to destroy his life once safely in the UK. I’m sure the mum to the girl has no level or sympathy and think she’s done the right thing.

Lincoln24 · 11/12/2024 20:28

He's 18 now but he was 17 at the time. They both were. So in your example it would be two 15 year olds. Ludicrous to prosecute either one.

No he wasn't
That's why he's being prosecuted
He was 18, she was 17
That's illegal in Dubai
And yes, two horny teenagers wouldn't bother what the law says, but this is the result
Maybe if more people become aware of the consequences of breaking the law in countries with stricter, and frequently reprehensible, legal codes they would be more careful where they go on holiday

The girl didn’t commit any crime, so no risk of her being arrested or prosecuted.

Her daughter broke the law too, they made a mutual choice and now this boy has to pay for it with a year of his life. Let’s hope karma gets her!

She's more likely to be Emirati or middle eastern. The UAE doesn't care about Indians and this case would have been dismissed ages ago otherwise.

What law did the 17 year old underage girl having sex with an 18 year old adult break?

What law did the daughter break? 🤔

Toddlertantrums222 · 11/12/2024 20:47

Re researching the laws. Surprises me how many commenters are saying ‘who would research the laws’ ‘how would they know’ etc but this is Dubai we’re talking about. A Muslim country. It’s not like you’re in Ibiza. Dubai, like most Muslim countries, is known for having stricter social laws so this law would not surprise me in the slightest and yes they are young but come on at 17/18 even I knew that.

IMO it’s likely they knew or were aware they were breaking the law, but just didn’t expect for it to be reported. Very harsh lesson for the boy to learn.

DualPower · 11/12/2024 20:47

The actions of the mother are utterly despicable and she's ruined the life of a young lad who's done nothing wrong.
Those of you saying you need to know the laws of the country you go to, don't be so ridiculous. An 18 year old might technically be an adult but they're still not a mature adult. This young man doesn't deserve this, he must be utterly terrified.

There is zero chance UK police/procurator would charge, let alone jail, a 16 year boy for consensual sex with a 15 year old girl. How is that prosecution in the public interest? So I’d imagine most people would feel exactly the same.

Pieandchips999 · 11/12/2024 20:48

He broke the law in Dubai. The laws there are really strict and the consequences severe. A poor women was nearly prosecuted for trying to end her life after an assault. I think the son and his mother were very naive. I won't step foot in the place due to being a lesbian as I'm pretty sure that's illegal too. I understand the girls family were strict and they may have thought Dubai was a good destination for safety due to the strict laws. The age of consent is 18 in a lot of states in the US and in some other countries. If you travel there you really need to keep to the law. Without knowing the girls family it's very difficult to know their motivation and what they expected the consequences to be

LadyRoughDiamond · 11/12/2024 20:30

I have heard that there was a racial element to this. The boy is black British, the girl is British Asian. Her mother checked the girl’s phone, but didn’t report it until they were safely back home so that her daughter couldn’t be questioned.

"Her mother checked the girl’s phone, but didn’t report it until they were safely back home"
Have you got a source for that?
I can't find anything definite one way or the other about it

He broke the law there yes I agree, but she also did. Funny how the mother didn’t do anything until the daughter got home, and then the mother went through the daughters phone, and then reported it, so her daughter, who also broke the law gets away with it

as another poster said, she’s an evil women

There’s nothing ridiculous about knowing the laws of the country you’re going to if there’s even a remote chance you might end up in jail for a year!

But so what if they were naive. Does that make his treatment right? People make innocent mistakes and unfortunately they don’t have time machines to go back and correct them.

angrymenopausal · 11/12/2024 20:50

I'm saddened but not really shocked at how many people are unsympathetic towards this poor boy and his family. I hope the mother gets her comeuppance and her daughter disowns her, the spiteful piece of work.
