To think this mother should be ashamed of herself

17yr old girl & 18 yr old boy hook up on holiday in Dubai. I believe they may have met over there. The girls mother finds messages on the girls phone when they return to the UK. The mother reports the guy to Dubai police. He gets arrested as sex with anyone under 18yrs is illegal in Dubai. He has now been sentenced to 1 year in prison.

I haven't looked into it much, as far as I can tell it was consensual, a charity called Detained in Dubai have been trying to help (legally I think).

Am I alone in thinking how bloody spiteful the mother is?!? The girl is 17 years old and I think in another report saw that she turned 18 shortly after returning.

Marcus Fakana: Briton, 18, sentenced over Dubai sex with girl, 17

Marcus Fakana has been sentenced for a year over the relationship, a campaign group in Dubai says.

The family are Indian Sikhs, to Indians black people are the lowest caste.
Apparently the messages were about meeting up when they got home, pretty sure this was the mothers incentive to take this action, pretty horrendous really

Sikhs aren't supposed to discriminate due to caste, they are supposed to believe in equality!

How do we know it was consensual? We’ve only got the 18year old male’s perspective.

Maybe she thought they were in a relationship, it doesn’t mean that she necessarily wanted to go as far as sex though. We don’t know the circumstances.

She could have felt very vulnerable being at a location away from her family so went along with it despite not fully wanting to. He may or may not have been aware of this. She could have told her mum she didn’t want to do it when they got home.

Unless someone was in the room with them we’ll never know will we.

Oh God, you’ve got him down as a rapist now as well? 🤦‍♀️

This is not over until the girl has returned to Dubai to face the same charge. The act was not assault, it was consensual. They are the same age. It's pointless speculating what would happen if she were 15 & he was 16 - they weren't, so it's totally irrelevant. They were 17 - I don't believe any of us would have thought of checking local laws before doing something like this at the same age. Get off your pedestals being so judgmental about these children. They were not adults at the time. We should remember that.

Where did you get the information that he was 17 when they had sex?

kaela100 · 12/12/2024 19:57

The UAE government isn't going to let her get away with it. They will forever be waiting for her to step foot in Dubai to charge her. So this means no more stopovers / holidays / visas

What would they charge her with? From their perspective, isn't she a victim?

According to reports the Mum and daughter are from England, she was in England when reporting this, this is not the culture or law of England so why is she obliged to do it?

Are you Nigel Farage?

2boyzNosleep · 12/12/2024 20:55

WillimNot · 12/12/2024 18:44

@2boyzNosleep you are indicative of the issues of Brits and rules.

If you travel to a foreign country, look into, and respect, their rules and laws. It's not hard

Sadly, he didn't. He is now facing the consequences of his actions.

Half the problem with the UK now is that laws seem to be there to be got round, broken and ignored. It's why we are in the mess we are.

There's no excuse and he now has a year to contemplate his attitude.

I refuse to feel sad for him or anyone else who thinks being British means laws don't apply.

Do you think that the girl is from Dubai? It seem that you may think that the girl is from there, but I may be interpreting it wrong.

It's the mothers actions, utilising that law for her own feeling of smugness, that I have an issue with. As I've said twice already, looking through someone else's phone is a crime in Dubai. It's very convenient that they didnt do it until back in the UK...

Would people still think the same if it were, let's say, Maisie and Theo, both White British.

Her being Asian British and he Black British seems to be swaying peoples thoughts about it. Yes she said her parents were strict but what does that mean? Grounded for some, beaten for others. A PP said that she teaches her black sons the risks of getting with girls/families like that, which she has good reason to. Yet as much as we warn our children, they do often just do their own thing anyway. They were likely to try and sneak off together at some point.

Are you Nigel Farage?

Eh- that's just lazy and deflection from the facts which are she went on holiday RETURNED and then decided to respect the laws of the land she was no longer in and comes from a country with an entirely different approach to governance! It is damn confusing, you must admit, it looks ridiculous and has no rhyme or reason. Don't you feel any compassion for this poor 18 year old lad? I find it terrifying that people think like you.

I have Danish heritage I don't think good Blighty, Nigel does does he!

I completely understand Goldenbears statement but this is hilarious 😂

Goldenbear- yes it is defective but I don't think it was meant to be offensive to you

He was 18 which made it sex with a minor and illegal in dubai. Thats it.

Northernlass1234 · 12/12/2024 21:28

I’m in two minds - yes it consensual but …. She was young - it is against the law and his parents should have warned him!!!

Ytcsghisn · 12/12/2024 21:54

He broke the law. Why are you ok with him breaking the law?

She was a few months short of 18. She was a couple of months younger than him.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 11/12/2024 19:59

He broke the law.

This is what happens when you break the law.

We can’t call people who report sexual crimes ‘spiteful’. We don’t know the details.

But you're prepared to damn him for even though "not knowing the details".

Prescottdanni123 · 12/12/2024 22:52

@Northernlass1234

She is young yes,but if it happened in this country, he wouldn't have done anything wrong and she would have been of the legal age to have sex for over a year. No one would have thought anything about it.

The only person who did anything wrong here is the mother. She did this out of pure spite, because she could. He was originally looking at twenty years inside. She deliberately set out to ruin his life.

Prescottdanni123 · 12/12/2024 22:57

@Ytcsghisn

You think that the law always has it right? In Dubai, you can go to prison for years for dropping the f-bomb. Do you think that is right? In certain parts of Africa, if a man rapes a woman and gets her pregnant, he is legally obliged to marry that woman. Is that right? The taliban have just banned women from speaking to each other in public. Is that right?

Out of interest, would people's responses be the same if this had happened in the UK and he was 16, she was 15?

Most definitely they're the same age group and as long it was consensual. Although I really want young people to wait till they're in their 20s

Wordsmithery · 13/12/2024 05:15

He did break the law, yes, so sadly he must pay the price. Not how we'd do things here, and a horrific situation for him and his family.
What's really sad is that:
A. His parents didn't tell him about the beyond-strict laws on sex
B. Her parents didn't tell her the same thing, or maybe she didn't listen.
C. Her mother took a deliberate and petty act of revenge which has resulted in a custodial sentence in a country renowned for its human rights abuses. How she can live with herself is anybody's guess.

What a stupid response. Completely irrelevant to my post, and the one I was replying to.

HarrietHedgehog · 13/12/2024 08:03

I think everyone who goes on holiday to Dubai or any other similar country should feel ashamed.

People are naive and travel without informing themselves of the true nature of the places they visit.

I feel deeply for this young man and his family who were misled by Dubai’s reputation as a holiday destination with sunshine, luxury hotels and cheap shopping.

I hope he can stay strong and wish with all my heart that our Government would give him and his family every support instead of pandering to an abhorant regime.

Blinky21 · 13/12/2024 08:17

Also it's a reminder not to support the tourist industry in Dubai which washes its image for tourists to cover up its numerous human rights issues
