To think this mother should be ashamed of herself

17yr old girl & 18 yr old boy hook up on holiday in Dubai. I believe they may have met over there. The girls mother finds messages on the girls phone when they return to the UK. The mother reports the guy to Dubai police. He gets arrested as sex with anyone under 18yrs is illegal in Dubai. He has now been sentenced to 1 year in prison.

I haven't looked into it much, as far as I can tell it was consensual, a charity called Detained in Dubai have been trying to help (legally I think).

Am I alone in thinking how bloody spiteful the mother is?!? The girl is 17 years old and I think in another report saw that she turned 18 shortly after returning.

Marcus Fakana: Briton, 18, sentenced over Dubai sex with girl, 17

Marcus Fakana has been sentenced for a year over the relationship, a campaign group in Dubai says.

Sorry, have I missed something- I thought the girls identity was secret - or has it been leaked?

Yes
On twitter apparently

I have 3 white boys and if they met a girl of a Middle Eastern / Asian descent, and she was she is LYING to her parents about her whereabouts and that they cannot know about my son… I’m going to assume they’re REALLY FUCKING STRICK PARENTS.
This boy couldn’t possibly know they were racist at the time and obviously just assumed they were strict. Who knows what has possessed this mother to do this to this poor boy, yes it could possibly be racism but not necessarily so, it could just be its because he’s a boy who has taken their precious daughter’s ‘purity’ away.

Exactly. You have 3 white boys. You will never understand the white privilege that comes with that. Nor will you ever understand how awful and vile the racism that black boys receive is. Don’t talk on what you don’t understand.

CagedSilverFrame · 11/12/2024 22:22

The trouble with this is, you only know one side of the story. And that will more than likely be inaccurate

You don’t know the other side at all. We don’t know any real details.

Everyone should be aware that Arab countries do not have our values, and are dangerous places.

another1bitestheduck · 11/12/2024 22:18

what part of where people have repeatedly asked you where you got this from are you getting stuck on?

You are right in that if this was the case it would change the circumstances. However all the reports I have read say that he was 18.
e.g.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cd7nwnw1e32o -
"This is clearly just a case of two older teenagers, both of them now the same age, who have been caught up because a mother reported the behaviour."
as in, they weren't the same age when the sex took place but the girl has (as confirmed in the same article) since turned 18.

If you do have any proof to support what you're saying, share it or stop yelling at people that they are wrong without any evidence.

He broke the law.

This is what happens when you break the law.

We can’t call people who report sexual crimes ‘spiteful’. We don’t know the details.

That argument would work if the event in question was a crime in the girl's family's home country. As it wasn't, the mother was spiteful.

I can’t see them at the all you can eat on a beach in Dubai though.

Oh, trust me they do go!

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 11/12/2024 22:25

Sorry I can't wade through all the posts, there's so much repetition.
I agree that the girls' mother is being vindictive and spiteful but...
If I was the parent of the 18 year old boy, I would have grilled into him what the rules were in Dubai, and what the consequences were for breaking those rules.

His 'punishment' could have been a lot worse.

But I cannot imagine going there for a holiday in the first place.

The two young people may have been of legal age in the UK to have sex but they should have been made aware of the different laws in other countries, especially in Muslim countries .
Muslim countries have very different attitudes towards sex outside of marriage and this young couple should have been made aware of the laws on this subject before they decided to indulge.
It's tough on the young man, but he broke the law of Dubai and as such he should face the appropriate legal penalty as decided by the legal system over there.
And once he's released from prison, come straight back to the UK and never set foor in Dubai again !

Holidaymakers are often under the impression that exceptions are made for foreigners.

I have gay friends who live there and seem to live without fear, but I imagine that they might be careful about showing affection to one another outside the areas frequented by foreigners.

Bunny44 · 11/12/2024 22:25

UndeniablyGenX · 11/12/2024 20:10

Out of interest, would people's responses be the same if this had happened in the UK and he was 16, she was 15?

Would think the same tbh. It might be against the law here but it happens doesn't it and where it's consensual and they're very close in age, it doesn't help society to send the older teenager to prison (because it could be the girl who was 16 right?)

I can’t remember who I was supposed to tag.
MN re NT

NT properties are seriously lacking in loads of toddlers
When ours were young it was us. That’s it.
After a few visits and near misses with Louisxiv furniture we took out membership of English Heritage.
Why
Because everyone knows they have the castles which are more exiting. They also sell swords so kids can run around like loonies leaving parents to have a cup of tea.
Nt hand out questionnaires for small kids, English Heritage do dress up.

Yummy mummies are not well known for doing NT….ever

On the face of it she is clearly a bitch. But.

How did she know they’d had sex? Assuming that she wasn’t an active observer, the daughter had to have told her.

Likely the daughter knows what kind of person she is, this won’t have been the first time she’s acted like this, the daughter still told her? Why?

I’m not sure the daughter is all that innocent here either.

Read daughters text messages

I would teach him better than to do what Marcus did….

Pretty certain that this girls parents taught her that sex outside marriage was 'wrong'.
What makes you think you'd be any more successful in your parental teaching?

really? the local ones to us when I had a toddler were full of them on the grounds. Might be an area thing. Had Easter egg hunts and everything

For what?
She didn't have sex with someone underage

Well if he was also 17 at the time she did

StrikeForever · 11/12/2024 22:29

Okay, I have double check and other posters are correct. The boy was 18, the girl a couple of months younger. I apologise for calling posters out on that.

Blimey there are some people very defensive over the National Trust, mind you, it and its dodgy agendas need someone to defend it - but enough derailing.

This mother is terribly out of line. Id be very unhappy if my daughter had be having sex at 17 but as it was consensual and not with a 30 yr old man I wouldn't do that. I would try and be discreet seeing as the laws in Dubai can ruin
lives.

user1492757084 · 11/12/2024 22:40

I hope the UK can successfuly intervene and have him transported back home.

I understand it was in Dubai and the law is different there but they are both British and it would have been perfectly legal if it had happened here. I wonder why the mother did that.

aliceinawonderland · 11/12/2024 22:42

I have absolute sympathy with the boy and hope that he can be repatriated, but it's interesting to read your thoughts that as it's OK here, it must be OK anywhere.
Yet when Prince Andrew slept with a 17 year old in the US (when the age of consent in the UK was 16), he was branded a paedophile.

Not seen any NTs in the Midlands or Northwest ?

English Heritage props however are always packed out with kids.
